Starlink ordered… I feel it’s the only sensible option now..

I haven't followed this thread in full but have been following Yoda Travels on YouTube. They are full timing in an expedition vehicle.

Using Starlink and made a simple plywood box with perspex lid to house the Starlink permanently on the roof. Seem to be very happy with it and have ditched phone contracts to offset the Starlink costs.

Just called my caravan insurance company and they said it's not a request they ever had so I have to wait for a return call to see if I can get Starlink added.

That's Towergate for you.

Yeh there are a few that have done it..and some that flog 3d printed cases...each seem to say the moving hardly affects connection.
One think though...warranty validity

Extra £9.80p wow for.......

Dish £300.0
Stand £76.0
Router £135.0
Cable £78.0

Well that’s not a good start… ordered it a few days ago, says 2-4 weeks delivery so wanted it for when home. It seems hours later, price dumped by £160 and all delivered within two days.

Feel like I’ve been shafted 🤬

So, fair play to Starlink, they have issued me a £160 credit (difference between the price I paid and the offer price) which was issued to my account today… 👌

When do you stop being on holiday and start living ‘slightly’ alternatively?

Is it number of nights, mindset, how others perceive you? I honestly don’t know, but I do know that I ‘need’ good internet irrespective of what I (or indeed others) think of the way we live. 😜
Its your money, your choice . We never watch live TV but my partner works occasionally from our van and from our boat in Greece, and we need good Internet availability. It totally pees me off how much UK mobile companies rip us off for EU data, Popit is about the only option for longer trips and access to reasonable amounts of data unless you choose the route that you have taken.

Just a heads up for anyone interested, had an email today.

Portability will no longer be an add-on option for new customers.

If you already have it you keep it until you change your service plan.

I went straight for the roam option, as that’s what we do, roam!! 🤪

Just looked and the normal residential is £75/Month and Roaming is £85/Month

Are they streamlining their offering. doesn't seem much point to Portability anymore?

Watching all the US Starlink fanboy and basher videos recently, those using residential and roaming are peed off, those wanting roaming are happy as the price has come down. So yes, they are adjusting their offerings and pricing points for said offerings.

I just bought the Roam. +£85 a month as and when you want it, minimum a month.
So you can just pay for the months you use it? And stop the payment if it’s not going to be used?

Glad it worked, mine just appeared as a credit on my account.

I'm making a small box up just to plug in, mains and 12 volts DC, using an old Teltonika router. I'll publish pictures if and when it gets done!

Cheers

Thanks Charles. Will be good to see… plagiarism being the perfect form of flattery! 😜

A Business sim allows you to roam across Europe uncapped and no daily charge £23+vat (£27) for 30gb any data you do not use is rolled over to the next month.

It’s a ‘good enough’ service at a reasonable price point

Good discussion thanks, funsters.
My friend went StarLink last autumn and it is superb. However, with the standard mains supply to Dishy and router, it gobbled power. It was using 240w on the inverter.
There are some clever workarounds that I have seen emerge, most of which use a non-standard router plus a non-mains power supply.
It seems there are big inefficiencies with the step-up-to-step-down inverter usage on StarLink.
He has reacted by adding a 5kw EcoFlow system with smart inverter and 620watts of solar....ahhh, how the other half live! 🤭🤭💖

Floydster are you seeing that 240w on the inverter?

ED O'DARAC is that measured at the battery input to the inverter so includes the inverter losses? Which inverter are you using?
That does seem excessive to me.

Hi, it was draining his whole van's batteries (brand new Frankia Platin) and rather spoiling his holiday. I met up with him after the Paris Moho show and I had my EcoFlow Delta with me. I lent it to him and it showed the watts on the display as well as the solar input.

I completely agree it seems more than it should need to take, but Americans aren't noted for their power-saving designs!🤭 (V8's etc🤭).

Just been told my Starlink gear will be with me today. I ordered it Friday afternoon!

Yes, the two - four week delivery timescale was a huge over estimate, got mine in a few days too!

I’ve been installing a frame on the roof with four stainless studs, so I can easily attach and detach the dish stand on the roof with some wing nuts, should be nice and secure when sited. I’ve also run the cable through the roof into the media cupboard..

Finally I’ve put another 200w solar panel on the roof which I hope will give me the power I need each day to run the Starlink.

I ordered when they dropped the price to £300, arrived about 5 days later. All for upcoming travel plans.
Been using it as my sole internet at home (residential plan £75) for the past month, replacing a nearly as expensive BT FTTP connection and starlink is giving me an extra 100mb/s over that. For use on the road and still working, it's the ideal solution.
For anyone thinking about roaming, I use it for work, and TV streaming and in the last 14 days I've used 539GB of data so you can see how that might affect use on a roaming sim deal. Plus is much more reliable than the 5g connection I tested. I guess the only downside is finding pitches with a clear north sky view.

Do you anticipate problems there? How low in the North does the dish need to face?

Not sure, it's currently on my garden table and surrounded by a fence and other houses and it's reporting a clear sky view. I guess the issue would be a pitch right next to trees but you do get plenty of cable to hopefully find a suitable spot for it.
