Starlink ordered… I feel it’s the only sensible option now..

3G data wasn't even a thing back then sadly.

Starlink is fantastic.
Apologies for the correction but 3G was a thing back then, it may not have been commercially available in the U.K. but like a lot of technology it often becomes available in other markets first. It was first launched commercially back in 2001

All technology is intermediate

World's first 3G phone network goes live

Is Starlink amazing…probably not and certainly wouldn’t pay £95 a month for broadband when mobile networks are currently cheaper and capable of providing enough bandwidth most folks use.

Agree, it’s valuable for a finite period and commands a premium only whilst valuable

Cellular data is pervasive but has and is being ruined by the operators dicking around with traffic management and roaming.

For an increasing number of people, reliable data is a critical utility. Is £95 reasonable for a critical utility? Show me a cheaper and viable alternative?

3G wasn't a thing back then in the respect that there was very few if any places you could use it.
I had a 3G PCMCIA modem on vodafone. I never got a 3G signal on it ever in any of my travels.
Mostly I got flakey GPRS and occasional EDGE. But NEVER got 3G signal.
And it wasn't just the UK, I never got a signal in France either. Bearing in mind that back then money was no object for me. I would have spent anything to have the best tech.

Yes Starlink is amazing. The latency is comparable to ADSL and the speeds exceed what most of the UK can get at home. Considering they are connecting not to geostationary satellites but LEO satellites whizzing past at very high speed it is really amazing and impressive.

As for you not paying £95. That is a decision for you. I am working ok on my £20 a month 4G connection currently but I could see circumstances where I would want the starlink.

Had a good look at the Starlink website…noticed it said you can’t run it on DC current…does that mean one would need an inverter ?

Yes just a small one..unless you see YouTube and a couple have used converters.
See YouTube for more info

Have a look back on this thread. Two on Tour posted a great link for DC power supply.. the YouTuber is Overlanders who’s a very decent watch.

Check vodas add-ons...ee have similar to above but if you then add on 10.00 per.month roaming extra addon..you get roaming EU and use all the data like you would at home. Also works is USA
Hmm…I’ve got 60GB UK Vodafone ….had it for ages…was £20 …then £23 and has now gone up to £26 ! It has 25GB roaming. Have been reluctant to cancel it because I heard that new Vodafone contracts don’t even give you the 25GB roaming.

So I use it in conjunction with Local EU sims. I’m in EU for a while so can’t go for a Poppit or whatever as believe it has to be activated in UK.

Are saying I can pay another £10 a month to get roaming extra add on so have 60GB roaming ? £36 pm !

Then cancel when I return to UK.

Amazing ! Think it bit beyond me at the moment ☹️

We have Vodaphone 100gb with 25gb roaming but found it would buffer a lot when in Benidorm this year

So just get a small inverter to run the Starlink instead. 👍🏻
yes…only got 2 x 92ah AGM batteries..
None of yer Lithium or anything or even Gel….would they be enough ?

Would love to have Starlink …very cool…can stop using providers who dick around with roaming etc as Carpmart said. Getting it on the roof like in Everlanders video way beyond me though..would I have to buy a 3D printer.

But keep setting up the arial …Hmm

As I posted earlier in this thread, cases Star Mount Systems
You can put these on the roof, have a quick release case, and move it around, or have a ready converted 12v set-up, loads of choices. I used solar panel fixings to secure mine permanently. Works perfectly.

On ee yes...but i assume others do it

And problems in transit Curt for sat nav etc

I switch my Dish off when moving as I don't have a use case to use while in transit it's running off an inverter and I prefer to save the batt; SatNav I use Waze. However, I often forget to turn it off, and it seems to run OK on the move can't say I have tested it though.

There are a lot of cases there…which one? the 12v se-up very pricey. I thought that the dish self seeked and needed to be at an angle….Everlander seemed to get round that by cutting the motor cable didn’t he 😥. Does it work stored flat inside a case whether on the move or not?

I'm using Starlink Roam (RV) here in Holland during a brief holiday. I must say it is very good and quick. I put together a mount on one of the extending TV aerial poles (using the Starlink pole mount), which fits into a holder I have on a bike rack (made from a small length of aluminium tube and a couple of 38mm clamps). It has enabled us (and our neighbours/ friends) to stream TV etc and keep fully connected. It doesn't move much (and only went off once in the middle of the night!!).

The recent brief price cut to £300 for the hardware has made it very competitive for roaming, and the monthly charge with the ability to pause (almost) seems fine at £95 a month. I guess the ability to have unlimited data anywhere in Europe will be good. I have all the bits now to make it work on 12 Volts, but at the moment we are using it on WiFi in a waterproof box under the van on 240-volt mains.

Cheers

Well that’s not a good start… ordered it a few days ago, says 2-4 weeks delivery so wanted it for when home. It seems hours later, price dumped by £160 and all delivered within two days.

Feel like I’ve been shafted 🤬
If you are within the 30-day refund period from the start then you may get a refund - just raise a request and wait - I did and it worked!!
Cheers

That looks great ! Few questions… Did you get the extending TV arial pole from Starlink as well ? Wifi in a waterproof box….do you mean a router In a waterproof box ?

I thought it didn’t work on 240v …. Is 240v DC ? As you can tell not much of an electrician…mind you kids these days can’t even wire a plug…not that I suppose you need to wire a plug these days.

  1. The Caravan TV extending aerial is a standard Vision Plus one.
  2. It slots into a 35mm 500mm aluminium pipe (from eBay) which attaches to the bike rack with two double half clamps (this was put in to hold a flag pole).
  3. I use a Starlink pipe mount available from their store at the top of the mast (you can only buy accessories after you have bought the kit).
It's the Starlink WiFi router in the plastic box: The Starlink kit runs off mains AC, so I just need a lead to the flat receiver, and to the mains in the van.

It is possible to run it all off 12 volts DC, and I have the bits for this: It needs a 12 to 48-volt step-up transformer, an injector for power over ethernet, but in most cases it's probably better just to run it off a small inverter from 12 volts (like a Victron). I just like fiddling!

Cheers

That’s great…I. might even go for this Starlink now.

Final two questions.actually three…..one wire from back of router up the pole to the Starlink dish and another from back of router to 240V Mains or a small inverter. Is that correct ?

I take it if you used the WiFi router I wouldn’t need a VPN for say BBC like I do with a Sim in my MiFi ?

I suppose the Starlink case on the roof with the two wires going through the roof to the router would be good as well…but don’t know how that would work as I thought dish had to be at angle and would it work through a case ? I suppose it must do….

Thanks for this. I can’t find a single way to contact support? Do you have an email address or something you could share please? Thanks!

Sorry for the delay - been out shopping in the Dutch rain!

  1. I signed in on my laptop - went to support, and then clicked on Cancel and Refunds.
  2. If you click on thumbs down you get a chance to raise a ticket.
  3. I got an automated Email giving some information,
  4. I then had to reply to that and got a human to give me the refund.
Hope this helps, if not PM me and I can help further.

Cheers

Yes, one wire to the dish on the pole from the waterproof box, and mains to the router (or a small inverter for 12V). You can get an Ethernet converter if you want as well from Starlink.
I take it if you used the WiFi router I wouldn’t need a VPN for say BBC like I do with a Sim in my MiFi ?
You'll need a VPN outside the UK. In the UK it works to UK ground stations and you get a Starlink UK IP address, but here for example in The Netherlands I get a Dutch IP so would need a VPN.
I suppose the Starlink case on the roof with the two wires going through the roof to the router would be good as well…but don’t know how that would work as I thought dish had to be at angle and would it work through a case ? I suppose it must do….
I guess so, I preferred to have a more temporary system to set up in a few minutes when parked up. I wanted it attached to the van rather than on the ground stand that they supply as it made it less obvious (and made theft or fiddling less easy).

Cheers
