Starlink ordered… I feel it’s the only sensible option now..

I appreciate all the well intended posts relating to mobile data, the deals everyone has got etc and accept that whilst that internet access is internet access,
Compared to some of us, Harvey is a teenager.;)

Meant in the nicest possible way. (y)

And accepted as such Sir! 😊

I’ve just ordered the residential version, so let’s see what goes when it comes.

We had a FREE sim last year that took us 2 months to get cancelled, they just kept taking the money every month until we submitted our cancellation request “in writing” to their head office. Took us 3 days to find their Head Office address to write to! Terrible company to do business with.
You may have bought the wrong SIM?

Ours is on a 1 month non renewable term. After one month or 210gb (whichever is the sooner) the Sim 'dies', never to be renewed, refreshed, revived ever again. If you then need another SIM, you go back to the store and start again. €19.99 and €10 for the SIM. Currently using ours whilst away in the motorhome.

As for those wretched souls, who simply NEED a rock solid internet connection, my advice is simple, go for it !! It's your money, your choice to watch as much TV or internet, whether for work or pleasure as you want in very much the same way it is for those who don't want to watch TV when away (or at home) in their motorhome!!
This motorhome lark is so much fun whatever you choose !!

PS if I could justify the starlink setup then I would prob go for it aswell, just to be able to access something if I wanted to, when I wanted to !!

My sentiments exactly Dave, especially if I was away in the MH for 6 x months or more. :)

Cheers,

Jock. :)

I will start off the 1001 questions - I know none of you are agents but you might know the answers ..

1 Can you have multiple users/devices sharing the connection at the same time, I e. Grandchildren on tablets,. Me on the streaming TV and the boss on her phone/ Facebooking etc?

I believe a Starlink router can support up to 200 users simultaneously, or you can use a third-party router. I use a Peplink. You can do whatever you do at home on your broadband, StarLink is mostly faster than most home broadband installations. If compared to a SIM, it's the upload speed that is critical. If you mostly consume download, watch TV, view webpages etc, it's cheaper to use a SIM. The download speed and latency may be OK. If you want multiple users on at the same time or use Zoom or chat rooms or play games etc, that require a usable upload speed, use StarLink. Also does not have any data cap or rely on cell coverage.

Thanks. It would be mainly for streaming TV (as I would be paying lol) as most if the other users could use phone data just as easily.
I suppose if I were to use it to replace what we have at home, when we are away and took it with us it would be a problem as our security cameras use the internet to send notifications. They record to the hard drive aswell as the cloud, so that would restrict our chance to remotely monitor when we are away.

Really appreciate the replies as it is helping me get my head around it to see if it's what would work for me.

Does anyone know if starlink roam is available to order in the UK - rather than bodging the job with the standard panel I would prefer to get “the real thing”

Can someone answer me this.

Residential kit can that be fitted to a roof via a flat mount and used while mobile?

Yes as far as I’m concerned.

Curt, What is a 'case' please, and where do you get it from ? It looks good to mount the aerial flat on the roof with conventional solar panel fittings. I already have starlink in the house, so for me its a potential £20/month extra, which is OK. I am just preparing to mount an aerial for Cellular. This maybe better for me

Yes it is...currently on offer 300 for the kit +95 per month

No..residential is limited to the locality where it is registered (in theory) but check out the "portability" mode same as roam..but charges as you use

There are rumours that using the Roam kit...on the roof and whilst in motion as opposed to the true "mobile" version has validated warranty..and they are looking to disable them..

Like i say rumours...but be careful.

Roam is available but only with the Standard dish.
Flat dish not Available in UK, it also costs about 2K more

The mobile dish is larger and more expensive, but its main problem is that it has much larger power requirements that, in my case, would make it unsuitable even if I wanted to spend the money or if it was available in the UK. Star Mount systems make the cases I referred to. Disabling in motion has been talked about forever; it's not a show-stopper. I'm not sure why anyone wants it while moving anyway; I switch my dish on/off, so saving the battery, but it works fine if that's your thing. You need a roaming contract to use roaming, the same dish different contract.

Well that’s not a good start… ordered it a few days ago, says 2-4 weeks delivery so wanted it for when home. It seems hours later, price dumped by £160 and all delivered within two days.

Feel like I’ve been shafted 🤬

Probably why yours was delivered quicker than expected, so you had it before the price dropped :(

You should have done your homework 👍

Nope. You need roam.
Why?

My caravan is on a 12 month sited location and now and again we tour hence the reason to move location.

My Starlink account says the following “For an additional monthly fee of £20.00, you can move your Starlink to new locations within your continent to receive service anywhere Starlink provides active coverage. To see active coverage areas, please view the Starlink Availability Map“.

Plus I can within my account change my home location anywhere within Europe.

So if I move around a lot and wish to have the facility of use on the move I can pay £20 a month extra or just move sites, change the location within my Starlink account manually.

Hence why I asked if I can site the panel on my roof using a flat panel surround as follows…..

I understand what you’re saying, but you should read the recently revised Starlink T’s and C’s pertaining to reduced service and designed to counter customers doing as you suggest and or push them to pay for Roam.
