Starlink ordered… I feel it’s the only sensible option now..

I’ve got two 100Gb Popit sims that I’ve been using in France and Spain since Boxing Day. You need to be aware that it has limitations. It’s not proper mobile data, as in a proper data sim, it a phone SIM so lots of shaping and poor 4G in good areas. Don’t get me wrong, it’s quite useable 80% of the time, just not the always on utility service I’m after.
Could you please explain why a service provider would shape or throttle their data?
Surely a fixed amount of data is paid for upfront, so what advantage is there to the service provider to make it more difficult for the customer to use it?

What’s the difference between the standard hardware at £300 vs the high performance version at £2410?

Popit is an MVNO, EE is the home network. When in the EU you are what is known as an in roamer to an unknown network (albeit with a reciprocal roaming agreement with EE) who operate their own infrastructure which you then use. These networks prioritise other traffic over you as a third country, non EU (sadly this is what the UK is now) in roamer and the quality of the service, the shaping of the traffic, the prioritisation of the traffic, is all algorithm based, according to the type of subscriber you are and what their own subscribers (and EU roamers) are doing in that cell at that precise moment in time.

So, a more succinct answer is that Popit’s service, whilst okayish, is not brilliant! I’ve been using it in France and Spain since Boxing Day, so I’m pretty well placed to comment from a real world experience perspective.

Well that’s not a good start… ordered it a few days ago, says 2-4 weeks delivery so wanted it for when home. It seems hours later, price dumped by £160 and all delivered within two days.

Feel like I’ve been shafted 🤬
Could you send it back .... Then reorder at the lower price?

Try a cool off return and re order ?

Maybe. I’ve established trying to get hold of Starlink ain’t easy! 🙃

I’m in Spain, so would have to ask Daughter to do it for me, so I think I will just chalk it up to experience. (And moan to you lot on ‘ere! 🤣)

Why?

My caravan is on a 12 month sited location and now and again we tour hence the reason to move location.

My Starlink account says the following “For an additional monthly fee of £20.00, you can move your Starlink to new locations within your continent to receive service anywhere Starlink provides active coverage. To see active coverage areas, please view the Starlink Availability Map“.

Plus I can within my account change my home location anywhere within Europe.

So if I move around a lot and wish to have the facility of use on the move I can pay £20 a month extra or just move sites, change the location within my Starlink account manually.

Hence why I asked if I can site the panel on my roof using a flat panel surround as follows…..

You can yes add-on is on the website account settings (not in the app)..they also reserve the right if you stay too long to adjust your location.
Basically it ads the "roam" option with the ability to turn it on and off.

Yeah sometimes the hassle isn't worth it.

Thought so.

Flat mount and away I go then.

My experience with StarLink customer care has been very good. I had problems with an intermittent fault I thought it might be because my dish was fixed to the roof. I contacted support through the app. Within 45 mins of contacting, they had remotely accessed my dish, diagnosed it as a faulty cable, and ordered me a new one under warranty. Three days later, I received it via UPS ( all kit is shipped from California, that's why they quote a global delivery time of two weeks). I would activate your gear and then contact support through the app; they seem to respond quicker through that medium as they know you are a customer and can remotely diagnose issues. If they don't refund, initialise a return and order a new one using a different email.

Thankyou for such a succinct and informative reply. 😊

Could someone explain the “Roam” “portability” bit. If I roaming around Europe is it still £95 a month ? Saw something about £200 a month ?

Europe wide ‘Roam’ plan is £95 per month. It’s the Global Roam plan you’re referring to.

Global being outside EU ? Do you have to be static with the £95pm ? I thought someone said you have to keep updating your location each time you move.

Yes available now, but withdrawn in North America recently… I think it’s a precursor to the same happening in the Europe zone.

Can any of you Starlink owners do a speed test and post upload/download and ping times please?

My new Starlink is at home, I’m 1500 miles+ south of that at the moment but will have it installed by the end of the month! Will post as soon as I test! 👍🏻

So are you saying that the £95pm is suseptipal to non portability in the future in your opinion ? So what would that mean ? One would only be able to use it in one static spot without jumping through hoops every time one moved in a Motorhome…or maybe not being able to move at all..doesn’t sound very Motorhome friendly…especially with the upfront costs £300 +

Roam is the portable Starlink. You can choose either a geographic version, Europe as an example, or Global.

The base service in the North American market had portability withdrawn, meaning that the only option if you wish to use in multiple locations, is now Roam.

The observation I made was that this is likely to be followed with the same in the Europe service zone.

So if I chose Roam and geographic location of Europe it’s £95 pm and that’s it…why would anyone chose anything BUT roam if it’s the same price….or is there at the moment a cheaper non Roam option in UK…sorry to be a bit thick 😊

Yes there is a cheaper static location option…

www.Starlink.com will show you all the options!

Some users have said it’s started out ok but as more users join it gets slower and there seems to be other issues.

Here is one article

However, Starlink’s satellites are much closer to Earth than previous satellite broadband initiatives, so latency is also being eroded. Ookla measured the average latency on Starlink in the UK at 37ms. That still compares poorly to the average of 15ms for fixed-line connections, but 37ms is just about good enough to avoid jitter in online gaming and videoconferencing.

To put this into context. in 2005 I bought a MotoSat DataStorm F3 which is a 1.2M dish. I paid for 64kbps connection and paid something like £400 a month for it (from memory).
The dish including installation was over £3,000.

Please note that is 64kbps not Mbps. It was the equivalent of a single ISDN channel.

I had to install 1,000AH of victron batteries costing another £1,500 and a victron Multiplus which was another £1,500.

3G data wasn't even a thing back then sadly.

Starlink is fantastic.
