Starlink ordered… I feel it’s the only sensible option now..

I wonder how many £99 hardware purchases are active subs making up the 2m?

What we (Starlink subs) all really need is a viable competitor to emerge so as to keep Elon from ramping up the monthly cost!
It’s a monopoly and everyone is happy to pay this American 🇺🇸

I wasn’t sure what connectivity I may have had when we were in Europe recently so I downloaded films and programs (you can only watch so much in an evening)

But surprisingly we had pretty good connectivity from the campsites WiFi

Do people really ‘need’ £100 per month Broadband when on Holliday…… probably not, but as they say the choice is yours.

I do get your point for your usecase, but I really do think we’ve done the whole, ‘do you need this’ debate now!

I’m currently on a nine month Europe tour, so yes, I need low latency, high bandwidth always on service and I’m happy(ish) to pay for it…

Yup I sort of get that but for most are just on their Hollidays we can all make a case for 'needing' broadband But it is great to detox I think many are addicted to it (me included) you only have to look around and see mums pushing prams staring in to screens kids cycling with a phone in one hand doing the same. So planning on not having connectivity wasn't a bad exercise.

I don't really need it and have managed for the last 10 years with no fast internet and using only 3G/4G signal as i usually put everything i need to watch on some external hard drives and just run these from my nvidia shield pro (i have 2 in the motorhome ie front and back). It's more about convenience as if the tech is available and it's relatively cheap (£99 for hardware alone is worth it) and the ability to stop and start when needed then for me its a win win. if no stop / start then i wouldn't bother.

Not sure that I would use it on my travels, but it would definitely be packed and disabled.
I've spent 3 months working from 'home', well 'motor home' and thanks to the reliability, i've not been rumbled, no way would I have got away with that on 3g/4g where I've been with a minimum of 2 microsoft Teams calls a day.
There is also no way I would have paid over 400 quid for it, but I'm glad I got it for 99.

I have had a friendly and healthy relationship with Dishy for the past few months. He was ignored for a while and I put our relationship on hold.
A couple if months ago I took him to France as we were going in our static and he served three statics with an an extensive amount of gadgetry and TV programming. He worked well even though he was tied to a post instead of being left to 'stand' around!
He was then given a few weeks off before we returned to travelling in the motorhome and has been doing everything we have asked him to do, often at a very high speed.
Now here is the issue. We are on a site in Italy where the temp is so high that we chose to be parked under trees. It has madesleeping at night so bearable. Had I gone ahead and asked Dishy to live on the roof of the motorhome permanently then we would have no signal....or a very hot and uncomfortable night

I do like the idea of Dishy being in place, ready to use but also recognise that could impact on other issues.

Time for a long hard think.....I am aware of threaded feet on the roof and pole mounted on the rear ladder, so it's not as though I am short of ways to overcome the problem. I even have twin Disyhy's but I don't think that's the answer .....

Interesting we had been away and used our 4g for work zoom calls no mess no fuss, but I guess it's what ever you feel comfortable with. At home we have a BT Broadband connection with around 51 Mb, if this fails it drops back to the 4g wifi unbreakable and whilst the signal isn't that strong Zoom and other work stuff works so I cant knock mobile signal its just not as omni present as one may like when working.

Go to Iceland and 4g appears to be everywhere and a good signal, Iceland have really embraced the mobile technology (although I am sure there must be not spots just did not experience any).

I rarely get 4G on the site I've spent most of the summer, it's in a valley with no TV signal and you can't hear any road noise, heavenly!

The last 2 years I worked from a site on 4G no problems but that site isn't open this year so things had to change.

What great marketing from BT. For years I've taken the mifi unit out of my van when I'm at home and kept it powered, my equipment at home knows about both networks and picks up the mifi if the broadband fails, it's nothing new.

It is good engineering and marketing the unit sits there and if the broadband gets disconnected the MiFi unit automatically connects the Lan in the house just keeps working and none of the devices have to seek a new network.

If you are using a BT broadband router and connected to it and the broadband goes down your router wifi will still be working which means a manual selection of your MiFi.

We would not have this 'unbreakable' service if we were not running a business from home like any business continuity you have to work out what it would cost if your network stopped working for us it is £xxxx per hour plus a possibility of reputational damage

My wife is highly skilled and knowledgable about many things when I am out of the house and the Broadband went down, it would be very frustrating for her to try and get the network back up, bare in mind her Computer is connected to the LAN not WiFi

We have both Lan and a mesh network connected to the router the BT 4G router is connected to the BT router which senses when the Broadband goes down and automatically connects. This means all of our devices have continuity it's a business solution for the home.

You also have to bear in mind, when using two different wifi units in the home they are essentially two different networks which may be fine for your use but not for our home business.

This is the video for Hybrid connect and you will see its not the same solution as just having a separate MiFi

So basically everyone's needs are different.
If you are running a business that requires 24x7x365 internet connection, from home, you are never going to go anywhere to need Starlink.
While my two networks might not switch instantaneously it still maintains a Teams call which is my only concern.
I work in I.T. the last thing I want to be doing outside my working day is messing around with this sort of stuff.
I don't understand why people get so involved in threads that they purport to not to be interested in, offering solutions to something that isn't a problem to this Startlink user.

People get involved in threads just because it's a social network and people have differing perspectives, needs wants and desires I guess

But there are always alternatives. We have on occasion moved the MoHo to make a Zoom call if we couldn't get a reasonable signal its no problem its a MoHo ;)

Also on site in Italy. All the spots are under trees
My heart sank a little as we pulled onto the site as 'needed' to watch the Mags (NUFC) kicking off in an hour.
Stuck dishy on the roof and watched as he turned to apparently look into the tree branches :X3:

Turned TV on and lo and behold HD reception with virtually no drop out or lagging. Getting 100+ on download.

And an 8-0 win to boot. Would have been very peed off if I'd missed that one.

It says over 2M active subs. So probably 2.5M sales of hardware judging by this forum :p

Starlink fault (update)….

We hung around a campsite near Sante Jean de Luz right in the south of France for a few days to wait for the cable to arrive and even though my daughter had the Starlink cable sent express Parcelfarce Europe (god there is a load of paperwork post Brexit), it took four working days to arrive… 🤦‍♂️

Anyway, it clearly was the cable that was the issue, or more specifically, moisture on/in/around the cable, as we are back fully functioning in Salamanca now! Actually getting up to 240mb down… 😎👌

So moisture in the end that gets unplugged each time? Do you use cable end protectors just out of interest when not in use?

Yes in the end on the roof…

I didnt, but I will from here on in…✔️

Do you remove the cable from the pole each time as even when mine was not modified I just left it plugged in and wrapped the cable up with it left in as that's how it came in the box. If so I would leave that end plugged in even when not using it. The only cables I removed was from the router end. Seems as though the ends are not that durable.

Has anyone been able to source replacement cable ends? I don't need one but wondered if 'some country' had started to produce replacement cables or connecters yet?

I don’t. I keep The cable in a box sikaflex’d on the roof...

I can't see how moisture can get into an end that's not being unplugged unless I am misunderstanding.

After an initial test in Kent which worked well I am currently in Reims a week later and it won't work. The app just says DISCONNECTED.

I have unplugged and rebooted several times and am getting nothing. Not really any idea if it can actually see the dish but it has moved since I placed it outside so I guess it was looking for a satellite connection.

How long does it normally take to connect if you change location and turn it on?

Sorry if this is an obvious thought, but do you have a “roaming” package?

When you say getting nothing, what do you mean? No internet on other devices or just Disconnected on the App?

I've been through German and Italy over 4-5 weeks with only 1 issue where the dish had an obstructed view giving patchy wifi/TV. On boot up sometimes it connects virtually immediately other times it seems to take 5 minutes +.

Sometimes up to 10 -15 mins but usually quite quick when used previously

Thanks all, it connected in the end but I am not sure quite how long it took as I dusted off my NetGear Nighthawk to keep me going. When I looked at it much later it was on. I was possibly a little impatient and rebooted too soon. Tomorrow I will be starting it in a different location so I will be patient and keep an eye on start up times.

Regards

Mark

When I move locations, I often forget to stow the dish. When I next set it up I find it works better if I actually start off by stowing it and then rebooting. Much quicker of course to stow it properly in the first place !
I also have a Netgear m2.which we have been using when mobile and that SIM contract has now come to an end, so not sure whether to look for a cheap data SIM or do more research into Dishy on the move!
