Starlink ordered… I feel it’s the only sensible option now..

Got pass though plugs they came as a kit with the crimper, it looks the same one that everlanders has.

Surprisingly a lot of companies are now realising that it is better to have the majority of core stuff in house and are reversing out of the cloud due to the extremely high costs.
i wish the company i am working for realised this but sadly not as they are about to move all theirs to AWS/Azure, still have approx 18months i think of work left so not all bad which may turn out ok so i can then sell up and go travelling. (Fingers crossed).
Been doing I.T for too long now (coming up for 30 years) and i just dont have the interest in it anymore, tired of constantly updating certs with new exams and paying their extortionate fees every 2 years for basically the same product just a version higher.
Rant over.

Back on topic :)

I am lucky, Worked for myself since 1998 and never looked back. I do consultancy work, security, maintenance contracts and software development so plenty of variety. Been doing IT all my life apart from a few years after leaving school when Dad forced me to get a trade and I did Electronics as part of my Electricians apprenticeship, briefly had a TV and Video service round, then a stint on a pig farm. Jobs were hard to get back then. Then got a job at a games development house and never looked back. Been in IT ever since :)

they are so cheap now they are worth having
I’ve got the crimping kit and tester somewhere!
Not sure if they are pass through type
It not may have to get an up to date kit

No rush as will be storing till next year
Although I did read somewhere it was recommended to plug it in and run it for a few hrs so as to let Starlink know device was still active ?!

Seems someone cocked up while doing the conversion to flat mount.

That's the reason why i never cut mine at that level as at least the method i used means there is no risk of cutting into that board, and no need to seal it as its already sealed. Also they are insanely expensive to buy that kind of flat mount at over £300 the last time i looked and that's without shipping to here as most that sell them are in the USA

Yikes! Looks like price plan changes are coming and the options don’t look nearly as attractive. New plans have rolled out in US and I guess will come here.

That was 4 months ago, still £85 for me.

Hopefully (not very strategic) with EU not having the adoption of Starlink that North America has, they will have to keep the tariffs lower here for a good bit longer!

I hope they don't increase it as I think that would price it out for a lot of people as it's already expensive. The only good thing is the ability to stop and start it else I don't think most would even have it on here. I know I certainly wouldn't, I think if they did it would be back to the drawing board.

Its not only the tariff - it is the way they may start limiting speeds and cap data - equivalent tarrif now looks closer to being over £100 per month.

Hopefully market forces will limit what they feel they can do when the time comes.

I agree - £85 is just OK on a stop start basis. Much increase over that and it becomes more tricky for sure

That would be me out if they did that.

I believe he will have little hestitation in raising tariffs as he keeps threatening to do with X / twatter, unfortunately.

if the prices did increase, i would seriously consider getting rid of my home internet, as i park my motorhome at home it would work for us as we dont need internet while we are away but its nice to have just for the security cameras, but im sure we could work out a temp fix/solution via a sim card

Those price increases might have put me off if it were a new purchase but having been connected now for 24 hours I am so impressed with the speeds I would reluctantly pay whatever increase might be applied.

Good job I didn't see that clip before placing my recent order!

I have it mainly for holidays here and abroad so an extra £100 or so isn't going to put me off.
If you couldn't pause it then I doubt I would have fitted it.
If Bezos ever gets his satellites into orbit their might be some competition.

About £120 if they just charge us the same. Ouch!

Back in the day I was building out my two 19"racks I had just leased in a data centre in Canary Wharf for a move down from Nottingham. Each rack was 48 U and was double depth. So that was 96U. I had to install these almost to capacity with 1U rack mount servers with Dual redundant NICs. Each 10 servers also had a spare cable routed just in case. So each server had 2 cables totalling 4x cat 5 connectors each. I will leave you to do the maths. Each cable was cut exactly to the right length and terminated, tested, routed and connected. This was not a job we did in one day :D

Since that day. I buy ALL my ethernet cables pre-terminated and wouldn't even consider terminating one myself ever again :D
My son spent years ripping out servers and replacing them, Bank of England and Stock exchange where just a few contracts his firm had, all sounded boring to me, he has now moved on to the software engineering part of it and is hopefully off to Singapore for a few months soon😁😁

Glad I told him I won’t be giving him a job in construction with me as he has more of a future in electronics😁😁

Handy also as he has just wired up my CCTV system and any trouble with computers he sorts👍👍

That is a regular joke amongst IT people that we are the free technical support service and how to avoid getting call outs.

The tech guys also complain that everyone thinks that everything with a plug on is their responsibility. "Can you fix that kettle"

family are the worst for I.T problems :( much prefer to be oncall as at least that way i am getting paid when called :)

I regularly get asked about windows computers, phones, tablets etc. "But it's a computer" they say....

My easiest explanation is comparing doctors. Do you want your Gynaecologist doing your brain surgery? :D

I wonder how many £99 hardware purchases are active subs making up the 2m?

What we (Starlink subs) all really need is a viable competitor to emerge so as to keep Elon from ramping up the monthly cost!
