Starlink ordered… I feel it’s the only sensible option now..

Do you anticipate problems there? How low in the North does the dish need to face?
Jim there is an augmented app you can install. You might want to install that and then walk around on the field so you can see how close to the trees you can get before it is affected?

Used mine at Ballater last weekend - was consistently getting over 150Mbps with pretty decent latency.

Did have a couple of 1-2 minute drop outs around 4am according to the app, but aside from that it was rock solid. Range on the router was good also - was travelling with friends so they all jumped on (with their kids) from their vans - had about 14 devices on it for the entire weekend.

Would be keen to get a frame/mount for it, but for now I simply cable tied the stand to the roof rack on the Drifter. Routed the cable in through the drivers door which it closed over no issue, but longer term will add a port for it up top (when I fit a solar panel next anyway).

But very impressed with it. Much more likely to get away more in the van now given I can work with decent internet from pretty much anywhere.

For me last weekend, the dish was never below around a 60 degrees angle to the sky (just eyeballing it) - so it doesn't need to be particularly low. Was surrounded by reasonable hills, but it was no problem.

The app shows you any obstructions/obscured areas relative to the dish position after an hour or so.

I’ve just checked out Tiekom and they are now offering internet rental I have asked for details and will post as soon as I get a reply😊
Here is the reply I recieved from Camino.
RE: Tiekom - Internet rental
Hello Alan

Unfortunately, I must advise you that we have this service "freeze" since 1st April due to same changes about international roaming policy of our current supplier (Vodafone).

This sim card will give you 300 GB but only in Spain.

As soon as the service is available we will send you all the information.

Kind regards / Beste Grüße / Un saludo

vodaphone pulled the rug out

should be 27gb

surley you can get unlimited in the Uk add on the £27day roaming charge & being under £80/month

don't come here then

& anyone using it should make a complaint . there is a minimum that must be supplied based on the EU Directuive & on what you pay.
Each Gb has a value of 3€.
The formula is ;
amount paid ÷ 3€= Z . multiply by 2 = 2Z & then add 1 to arrive at
2Z +1
If you are paying 39€/month then it is 39€÷3€ =13 X 2 =26 + 1= 27 gb is the legal minimum from a Tiekom card.

In fact since last July roaming charges have been techniocally illegal in the whole of europe as by that date all were supposed to be discontinued & you could "Roam like at home"
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roaming_Regulation_2022

https://ec.europa.eu/commission/presscorner/detail/en/QANDA_21_654

yes we don't have that either:(

I don't watch tv at home so am like you & the van doesn't have one either.
"Roam like at home" Only in the EU. The UK is not in the EU so our roaming charges are back.

Now that the Camino (Tiekom) service has had its day and the continued roaming data challenges, as well as crappy data service in the UK, I’ve had enough of pratting around as I just want always on, full service broadband wherever I am.

So, the solution (I hope) is a Starlink Roam order was placed today. £460 for the hardware, £95 per month for the service. I know some may consider this expensive but I will no longer need a data tariff SIM in the UK for the Netgear, nor will I need the Tiekom data SIM for between 5 and 8 months per year and I can knock back the Popit SIMs to 10Gig each, so the difference is not that great really.

I’ve worked out a spot on the roof where I will be fitting a small frame to mount the dish whilst parked up. It will be a couple of mins job to climb ladder and four wing nuts to secure, connect the cable and job is done!

The cable will be permanently installed through the roof into my existing media cupboard and at present I will power from my main inverter, but I may switch to a small 250w Victron pure sine wave inverter just for this in the future, so I don’t have to leave the main inverter on all the time.

Starlink quote around one KWh of power consumption per day. The peak power consumption is 75w and average consumption seems to be in the 35w range (230v power ratings). Many North American RV users are suggesting that the power consumption is way better than Starlink suggest and better than they expected.

A new feature from Starlink should help with power use as you can set ‘night periods’ where the system shuts down during set hours to reduce power consumption. I’ve ordered and will fit another 200w solar panel to augment the existing solar. I actually needed a larger Amperage Victron MPPT and some bigger cable to the batteries as well, so not the cheapest exercise… 🤦‍♂️

I’ve purchased a compact almost purpose designed electrical box to store the 75ft cable in on the roof when travelling. This will enable me to move the dish from the roof to the ground should I have obstacles obstructing the dish, but very easily without too much faff.

Will try and document a ‘how I did it’ incase it is of interest and or use to others and will of course let everyone know how good (I hope) this is…..

🤞 the expectation and promise from Starlink matches real world performance. Watch this space! 🤪
I've just fitted Starlink and the speed is phenomenal Netgear box with EE card is 30-40 mbps
The Starlink is 150 mbps when you first switch it on but if you leave it connected it seems to get better.
The only problem is storing the 75foot lead, shame theres not a shorter one.

I've got mine but I'm not going to buy any data yet. Where I llive I get unlimited data at over 300mbps for a £enner a month. I'll ptobably buy my first months data and have a play In June (y)

Not sure if this will help, but my first Mk1 box is for mains only and can be left outside to provide WiFi inside the motorhome. It will also fit in a bit of cable to shorten the lead and uses the existing Starlink router. It uses the Masterplug outdoor box, which has nice waterproof seals for cables and can be got for less than £10 off eBay or Amazon.
The Mk2 will do AC 240V and DC 12V: In my Masterplug box will be a POE injector, satellite cable connector, and power from 240V to 48V and 12V to 48V (RS do a good Mains to 48 Volt switched mode). I'll use a Teltonika router, which will also run from 48V. I have all the bits, just a matter of having some time! The 12 Volt converter is an eBay one from China and does not fill me with confidence that it will work well, but we'll see.

Cheers

Hello Charles

Thanks for posting and good work!

I watched the recent Everlanders video (YouTube) showing his two brick 12v and 48v conversion of the standard Starlink router, which I think I will copy!

He posted another video the other day, how to power more appliances from 12v, which wasn’t earth shattering, but interesting none the less.

And yes, the CAT5 jokes have been made :p

Just need this to be available in the UK. I didn't think they sold anything except direct....

Starlink Mobile

Not cheap but actually designed for the job
Not sure why you would buy from a third party unless you wanted the install?

I wouldn’t - just pointing out that not available in the U.K. and they are using dealers in US

How long has the rental in the UK been an option ?
£15. per month then usage fees?
Id have probably gone for that back in the day to test the water.
good for those that want too now I suppose.
still have the 30 day return period too remember, if you do go "all in"

I don't understand sorry?

If you want it in the UK buy it and have someone like Wissel install it for you?

Its not available in the UK!
search for starlink mobility package.

a few have also reported that the standard dish mounted works ok on the move aswell. £250 for 50gb, no thanks. though it does mean actual mobile moving data and will switch to standard plan when used up

Starlink Roam is not the same as Starling InMotion which is currently available in the US and not in the UK. I am sure the roam option gives great results when stationary (as many have said above) - it is not designed for use whilst travelling and people are constructing ways of popping it off and on the van and definitely voiding any warranty on the equipment.

In Motion is a bigger dish designed for the job (much more expensive) and would be my preference. I just wish they would start selling it in the UK

Mobility not roam.

Would have been OK with paying £2400 for the kit - only like buying a satellite system, but £247 a month is just too much so back to the drawing board and use the roam option. Going to give it some thought. Don't need it imminently as not going to Europe till later in the year and have unlimited Vodafone data in the UK

Although I still think the power consumption is a bit much as we don’t use EHU anymore, I think am going to order one before the special offer price finishes .

Just looking at this now . £320 upfront to own it and then £75 a month or £20 upfront cost to rent and then £90 a month with rental charge .
Not sure which option to go for .

It's a matter of working out how many months you'll rent it. £300 up front to own it, after 15 months you are paying again. I think I got a good deal.

I just swapped my Starlink router for a Asus one and god it mules now, glad I did it.

I suppose if the rental covers replacement if damaged after warranty period will make a difference to some.

But like the old rediffusion telly rentals. Sometime soon there may be a flood of the "ex rentals" come to the market.
