A sunny and warm day to wander around the village…

A once prosperous village with many shops and trades…

I was surprised how certain items were still preserved like the abundance of sewing machines and some of the cars and the wires for the electric tram way but also how the buildings had deteriorated. The village is bigger than I anticipated. The entrance information was a lot about the build up and the war itself with a main focus on the village and I was a little disappointed that English was not supported on all the information whereas German was. I was in awe at the depravity humans can can get to….😔

I’m glad I went to see it, us humans have a macabre sense on wanting to see advents like this, I went to Dachau concentration camp and that upset me to think of the thousands who perished there and today was no different for the hundreds that died here.

I did however feel that I was at an attraction rather then a memorial site, certain items placed to attract a photograph, renovations taking place and even building what seemed like new ruins..? The questions the village gave me that weren’t answered like why did they in the short timescale did they burn every single house down in a sizeable village…

What really got to me was the mention that there were French collaborators with the German soldiers there and also there was something about the whole situation being forgotten about or swept under the carpet and the place didn’t get recognition for what happened there for quite some time… unless I’ve misunderstood some of the writing about the place.

I will endeavour to read up on it as I have unanswered questions on it.
But like I said, I tend to have a good imagination and I can only guess at the horror that occurred there…

But most of all like dachau that when death comes to us we stand there and accept it is the end.
Charles de Gaulle ordered that it was to be preserved exactly as it was left
Building work is just maintenance.
Great memorial to a dreadful event , to me , done respectfully

Going to rain a bit today so we’ll get out and get going to explore….😎

That picture makes me think, if Britain had space to spare like that, probably we would have Aires?

I wonder what proportion of the French are Full Timers?

Amazing how a 20mile stretch of water can make such a difference and why didn't we make use of it when we could? 🤔

Sorry Just smiffy , thread drift!

My impression after visiting it today.

It isn't just being preserved. Some parts are being rebuilt which seems a little strange , why rebuild some parts when obviously the whole place has and will continue to deteriate over time.

The car that everyone photos outside gas been treated and placed on bricks , why that one when the rest haven't. A few have definitely been positioned for dramatic photography.

By all means preserve it , but it should have been left untouched as was intended.

I think there are a lot more French fulltimers than there are brits . And they make full use of the facilities available. The UK would never provide that

Let's be honest, with this countries overcrowding and the price of land in Britain, not to mention other services the Government provides for free, where would the UK find the space or the money to provide this, often free, facility?

Let's face it, even the few that are provided are often unappreciated and abused! 😡

Stonehenge has been rebuilt, repositioned & "improved" several times.
Many monuments are meddled with, sometimes just to cope with the number of visitors, but as long as the intrinsic message is still there, I think it's ok.

I was surprised when I visited Machu Pichu, after seeing the classic tourist views & photos, how much has actually been rebuilt. I hadn't realised it had been 'restored'.
There was an area, mandated by UNESCO to be left as discovered, as excavated originally - it was just rubble.

There is a site explaining the preservation of the ruined village .
Walls and floors which have recently collapsed are being restored not rebuilt .

and this is what I ALWAYS tried (and often failed) to get over to my Coach passengers, when I took them on my tours of France & Germany ( not forgetting the rest of Europe)

By the end of WW2, many areas of these 2 countries, was flattened with only the occasional chimney stack showing and what one see's today, is the reconstruction, often EXACTLY of the previous buildings.

Most of the buildings and places, one see's today, (Berlin, Hamburg and Nurnburg, to name but 3) although looking 100's of years old, are often less than 80 YEARS OLD!

Perhaps what you saw in Oradour Tam, is part of that reconstruction, that happened after the war and not recently? 🤔

I, on the 1974 Anniversary Tour of the D-DAY landing, was given some actual Newspapers from that time by the Hotel owner where we were staying (and had stayed on previous D-DAY tours) so I could show them to some of the ex soldiers we had on board.
I STILL have these Papers amongst my file of treasured possessions. They show the area around the beaches as flat!

I wish that I was clever enough with this modern technology so I could show them to you.
If someone reminds me before the Bash, I will bring them with me! 🙂

You should have taken it for me Tam because it looks like they didn’t need it….😎
Aye well that was the weird thing. It was a woman about 30 ish she parked it outside church got off and walked in ...no stick or anything. 🤔 she then overtook me later when I was walking round another bit.

The car outside the building has definitely been sprayed with rustoleum in the last few years .. there's also a few of them have been sat up on bricks etc which means they've been moved around . But you can read an account online where its claimed the villager driving that particular car drove in to the village just an hour or so before the massacre, not sure who was supposed to have seen that either as only a few people survived.

It's just one of those annoying wee things I wish they'd just leave as it was . It just makes you wonder what other things were/are staged to create a good photo etc .

As someone who loves old ruins and abandoned buildings, cars etc I've seen loads that's just left how they were and how nature slowly reclaims them . There's a lot of that in that village too and I personally believe that's how it should be . That's why I generally avoid the visitor centres etc they build around these things .

Just leave it exactly how it was and let time take its toll . That's true history
As soon as you start meddling with it , fabricating bits , putting speculation, hearsay etc as facts it becomes a very different thing

But tam. Leave it to rot ,pretty soon it would be forgotten then it would be no more than another pile of rubble with all the memories gone.

The rest of it has been left Charlie.

And to be perfectly honest In time that is exactly what should happen ... whilst it's right to remember I do think there's sometimes just a little too much remembering done . To the point that we actually have folk in the UK with paintings on vans etc of lest we forget etc the uk in particularis obsessed with the war , some still think we are at war with Germany and some politicians played on that back in 2015/16. Every nation has committed atrocities in history , there have been many many wars and in truth no one actually does learn From them it's just soundbites , that's how we have the war in Ukraine at present and all the carry on in Israel etc ...humans never learn .

So yes just leave it exactly as it was and if in a hundred years or so it's just a pile of rubble so be it ... that's true history

There's enough books. Photos etc around to show how it once was . That's enough.

I hate when they partially rebuild castles etc too . Just leave it as it was .

The rain held off and it was a pleasant walk, more to see and do then I thought, a pleasant surprise was the restaurants and shops weren’t overly tourist expensive, you could get a plat du jour on average for €14-€20 and Cintia bought some sunglasses for €10…😎

The lift was free for me but €6.30 return for Cintia…😱
