Portugal is now off the green list

Well it was debated, and leant in the early days to minute risk, then large risk then not so large risk.

But touching contaminated surfaces then your eye, mmaybe mouth then yes. Small I agree but still a risk. Just the same as a cold can. This is why we all do fist pumps and elbow smashes.

It comes down what is reasonably practicable and safe versus letting u soff the leash.

Id like to make sure "perfectly safe" and stay at home a few more weeks, than run the risk of passing it on and raising the numbers
It will never be perfectly safe. Covid is not going away, ever.

Beggars belief that Mr Shapps can spout about the rising cases in Portugal, when it is clearly because of the Indian variant being imported to the uk, and then to Portugal because of poor management, in the first place.
I have the view that as far as travel overseas is concerned, it should be restricted to fully vaccinated people only, those who cannot have the vaccine, which will be comparatively few should have a medical exemption, it may encourage the unvaccinated, and unwilling to get vaccinated.
I don't know if Portugal's rising figures are due to the Indian variant, but if they are, then surely that is due to Portugal dropping their restrictions for entry to their country

Or us taking it there, broad as it is long.
According to the BBC, if you trust such a source, they also said the Indian variant is now the dominant one in the uk.
They also mentioned a Indian/nepal one as well.

But then Portugal should have taken the same position as France and not let people from the UK in for holidays, irrespective of whether our government had them on the amber or green list

I guess some countries need desperately to open up their economies as they need to income as maybe they are not able to borrow like the UK is to keep people sitting around.

Iv got through nearly three pages of this, who the hell is jvt?
about the only person so far who has spoken any sense

Not being pedantic, but you should change "a few more weeks" to a few more years at least, to be even remotely accurate
thats the probem, the unknown
but we do know atm it is reviewed every few weeks

Hi MITHRANDIR whilst I understand your view on those that are fully vaccinated being allowed to travel abroad whilst those that have not yet been jabbed barred from doing likewise and that it would indeed encourage those not vaccinated (by choice) to get the jab it does rather miss the point that at this moment in time there are still a great number of people that have not yet been offered the opportunity to be vaccinated (my son at 22 years old has asked on a number of occasions only to be told in no uncertain terms that he will be contacted when it is his turn) I myself at 59 years of age took the first opportunity I was offered and will still not get my second jab till Saturday and my 58 year old brother in law does not get his till a week later.

It also does not seem to take into account (apology's if I missed it) that those returning may inadvertently return with the virus and then unwittingly mix with someone who through no fault of their own are not yet fully vaccinated.

Once everyone has had at least one opportunity to be fully vaccinated and only those that so choose are left without protection I would have more sympathy with your viewpoint but despite great strides forward we are not quite there yet and I hope those that were lucky enough to get vaccinated early show the same level of patience with going on holiday as those that are still waiting for the first offer of some level of protection.

Your argument is with scientists, not me.

But, just to amuse me, how under the circumstances of both countries being equal, would travel in both directions have a negative effect in either country ?
The land border doesnt stop it. If it does, should we close county borders, Borough borders, Parish borders and roads we live in to stop traffic flow ?

Its all going to go out the window. There are not systems in place to check all those travelling back from yellow listed countries to see if they are tucked up indoors for 10 days. So all those who have decided to spend half term in Spain due back this weekend, who is going gtpo check on them. Now add all those from today or whenever the Government say that coming back from Portugal will need to stay indoors. What will that total be. 200,000 people maybe. Come on this is all going to fall flat on its face.
I reckon they should ban all air travel and just allow ferry travel by only motorhome.BUSBY 🤣🤣

Guardian had a chart of UK infection sources yesterday; Indian Variant 58%, Kent Variant 37% and Others 3%, presumably 2% difference being rounding errors.

It wasn't that we were lucky,,it's because we are old codgers🤣🤣 BUSBY.

Portugal first started this rise on 16th May.

Im not arguing with you, Im just saying the 100 Vs 100 is madness.
If my country had 1000 and another country had 100, I may or may not let them in. It all depends on your own local policy and not, oh we are the same, ok then come in. The risk still needs to be calculated, not on being "equal" but judging your own "risks"

there could could be 100 cases in a country of 100 million and the same in a country of 2 million.

Then we can rattle on about pupolation density and all that.
Look after your own house, and I have to say it, be cast iron before you open the door, then makes ure everyone who comes through that door is compliant to your house rules.

Just look at Taiwans covid timeline & actions compared to us. Its a joke and they have a population of 28 mill or so.

Im sick of turning on the radio and hearing some knob bleating about how they missed their 70 birthday last year, wedding, holiday...lol and its happening again ALL the govts fault for not letting us off the leash by now..
Its rare to hear anyone say, Oh yeah if we stay vigilant for x amount of time more and the numbers work out then off we go.

And no Im not a pro vaxer, pro govt balh blah, just sick of hearing "me me me me me"

And our figures are in with a 3.5 rise taking us to 67.2 making a 44.2% fortnightly rise.

Any chance BJ banned us going abroad because one thing is almost for certain now, other countries beyond France/Germany/Austria/Norway wouldnt want us, so better that we say we re not allowing you to go because of the possibility of a variant in their country, than to be told "You aint coming" because of the definite cases of variant in your own country ?

First of all you have to know whether "perfectly safe " is safer than " incredibly safe"?
Is "believably safe " safer than them both?

Personally I think "incredibly safe" is just that, Incredible in that it is safer than "perfectly safe".
Whereas "unbelievably safe" trumps both of them, in that it is so safe it isn't believable that it is.

Some people could have an argument, all by themselves, in a sealed motorhome.
I usually do regularly & on a daily basis & even many times a day.

& the Itinerants taking it over there.
