I think that should read “Our dog barks thats what dogs can do.” I have owned and trained dogs for more than fifty years, and know that it is possible to train dogs to do most any reasonable thing. You need three things. Firstly you must understand dog psychology. Then you must apply your training firmly, and consistently, in a manner that dogs 'get' - they want to please. And they must know where they stand in the hierarchy, and will always test you to see if you are still top dog, or whether they need to take over.
You can tell the pack leader very easily - they are the ones pulling at the end of a long lead, the ones that barge through a door first, the ones that persistently bark (with good intent, they see it as their rôle, and haven't been told otherwise).
My dogs knew not to bark, except in certain circumstances, which we all clearly understood. A notable circumstance was was anybody of the 'tarmac-your-drive' persuasion.
When we had new neighbours move in next door a few years back, they came with two dogs and we thought sod it just what we need, a couple of barking dogs.
I light conversation with the new neighbours a day or two late, said I hope that your dogs do not bark too much to which they replied, we hate barking dogs too.
The only time that their dogs bark is if they hear someone on their gravel drive which is what they have been trained to do and when they are told to "shut it" they stop barking.
