Mosel Meet.

Now at Kobern-Gondorf, 5e,no ehu but dump and water available, bit close to the main road and railway station behind that, but on the river, castle across the road up the hill, Hazel nuts on the ground everywhere. @dabhand and and @BILL 875 have just pulled in also.

Get the hankies out,

It's been an interesting 24hrs.
Late Thursday night after a convivial evening sat outside the 'van with @Mike n Kim at Enkirch, we received the news that our DIL had been admitted to hospital and was under the knife.
Tossed and turned all night and by dawn a decision had been made to decamp and return to Blighty. We have a granddaughter that needs looking after and, when all's said and done, what are Grandparents for?

We finally got to Caen after 10.00pm and thanks to those wonderful peeps at Brittany Ferries, who transferred our October ticket from Roscoff to todays crossing without fuss, palaver or cost, we are now on our way to Pompey for the drive up to Staffs.

On behalf of SWMBO can we thank all those Funsters who we bumped into over the last two weeks, (you know who you are,) for making it such a lovely experience. The Moselle (I can spell it properly now I'm out of Germany) is quite frankly, amazing with wonderful views and handfuls of one of your five a day at every stretch of the arm.

Safe travels to one and all

Regards

Derek and Mary

Sorry to hear of your troubles @Emmit @Scout hope DIL is ok and tht ut is only a fuse.
Now sitting on the RV park @Trier, hissing it down, again we are the only UK vans here, think someone has been spreading the word ;)
Entertainment fr the day has been
A. German registered van trying to get out the in barrier, despite out in red letters in several languages on the correct one
B. two D registerd vans trying for the same spot,, missed that one but John did not. Storm due tomorrow, last few days in Germany and trying to decide between the south of France and Spain, will need to look at the long term weather forecast.

Sorry to have missed you. We were going to move to the Trier RV park but decided to stay put in Mehring. We did, however, take the bus and spent the day in Trier. We're just back. Probably heading southward tomorrow.

It seems to be full at the moment, but vans moving off during the day, 10-12 seemed to be the big moving time time today. we were pleasantly surprised we managed to get 3 vans, not only on the RV park, but all together.

Thank you, that chimes with something @Lenny HB mentioned last week, around ±mid-day is a good time to arrive.

We've used plenty of aires in the past but I think generally in less popular areas. I was surprised, for example, of just how many motorhomes there were in the D Day beaches area - and almost all of them French. We haven't come across this before. Possibly because we haven't explored these regions before.

Sorry about this Phil, have you checked the battery to ignition fuse?

Quick updatem after hours of waitingm the man turned up spent ages swapping out fuses and relays, the van would not srart, so he went to pull up the tow truck and i tried once more, it fired up into limp mode but i could nit get drive, he came vack and faffed around a bit more then disconected the nain cab battery to clear out all errrer codes, the can started first time and is all ok , home tomorrow as planned

It is looking increasingly likely that we will be coming over to "do" the Moselle probably later next week and staying for 10 to 14 days. A quick decision so I need to get clued up on what to see and where to go. Can anybody recommend a good guide book and road map of this area please.

We will be coming over in the late afternoon maybe next Thursday (frequent traveller tickets on the tunnel) and will stay in Cite Europe for the 1st night. From there we will head West staying in France and probably using the autoroutes heading towards Metz, then heading North up the Moselle. Can anybody recommend a good first night stop North of Metz, or maybe just in German or Luxembourg please? Also any recommendations on "must see" sights and "must stay" Aires would be really helpful.

Finally it would be great if we could meet up with some funsters, whether we have met them before or not. Anybody at the Southern end of the Moselle next weekend and wanting to meet up?

Thanks for any help you can give me.

Edit. Also another questions please. I already have the campercontact app on my phone and the Camperstop Europe paperback Guide. Are these sufficient or should I get the Bord Atlas as well?

Just follow the river Peter, CC and park4night and the tourist map is all you need. Just google each place and search for Stellplatz or Reisemobilplatz that’ll get you by(y)

@peterc10 Dont forget big saving on refuel in Lux:) Trier , take 53 north and you stay on that untill Alf where it changes to 49 to Koblenz . Globus at Zell is a very useful resupply point and has a couple of good Stellplatze. Cochem, is very nice , if slightly touristy .
Bernkastel is similar but a better range of shopping esp damen mode! Castle at Cochem , and also there is Burg Eltz https://burg-eltz.de/de/ , Koblenz has the seilbahn up to http://www.tor-zum-welterbe.de/festung-ehrenbreitstein/ fortress.
There are more than enough stellplatze , with a couple that are huge that you can use as a safety net Enkirch , and Klusserath .

Reading thru this thread can give you a pretty good feel for what stellplatze are like . The road for the most part is very light on traffic and is easy travel :)

On a stellplatz at Bacharach will be making our way there later today or as soon as last night's excesses have worn off :)

Here’s what we did:-

Cité Europe to Mehring - Mosel Beach Cafe - 288 Miles
N 49.79408 - E 6.81712
Nice cafe/restaurant on riverside site, Cafe may may be shut now but Weingut next door where you can eat and buy wine bottles or box!

Wintrich wohnmobilplatz - 21 Miles-
N 49.88444 - E 6.94774
Nice place small town not a lot going on, great restaurant by site Bruhler Hof ate there twice in two nights.

Reil Mobilstellplatz - 28 Miles N 50.02703 - E 7.11439
Plenty going on when we were there with a bar and mobile “chip van” on site for the fishing contest, should be quieter now, couple of nice Weingut nearby look for witches broom with yellow and green crepe paper on sticking out of wall, good cheap wine there.

Zell (Mosel) - 7 Miles the one by the footbridge NOT road bridge is closer to town. N 50.0293507 - E7.178369
Nice small town, liked it here stayed two nights

Ediger-Eller- 10 Miles- N50.0932547 - E7.1594606
Stellplatz not that big, “town” is a row of restaurants and a shop.

Ernst - 9 Miles N50.14260 - E7.23211
This is not right next to the river it’s by a wine warehouse and we stopped two nights here as we caught the 711 bus to Cochem about 15 minute ride €5 Return for two. It’s a busy town but worth a visit, we like it.

Kobern-Gondorf - 20 Miles. N50.30563 - E7.46068
Nice little village, not a lot going on had a lovely trout lunch here. At Side of road and railway but worth a night €5 no elect but dump and water. We here at moment meeting up with Busman Dave and Maggie, before deciding wether to go on to Koblenz or backtrack to the places we passed by ( deliberately) so we could stay different places on the return.

Others will like other places but just stop and go mate, don’t have a plan it’s easy, but if you want to get a space in the busier places arrive about 10am.

Have fun and maybe see you soon Peter, love to Angela btw

Thank you for all that info Simon, really useful . If you do track back down the river we will be able to meet up and we can buy you and Maggie a few drinks for the help.

Give Maggie and Dave and Maggie (confusing or what) our love as well. He said they were leaving about 1 October, so we may be able to meet up with them, depending on which way they are going. At the moment the plan is to catch a late afternoon train Thursday 27th.

I am also going to try to check for any wine festivals etc.

Would love to meet any other funsters that will be there at the same time.

We'll be moving on from Graach tomorrow morning, but not sure whether to go north or south..............................yet. :)

Cheers,

Jock. :)

We bailed out this morning and are now just outside Basel. After arriving at a wee Stellplatz I looked at the CC reviews. Latest one was July, from Wino. Our Wino?

Thanks to everyone travelling up/down the Mosel over the last three weeks for info etc. We enjoyed meeting three couples, and nearly encountered several others, by chance.

we got home safely, but came through some awful rain, about 10 miles from the tunnel (uk) some guy spun a sports car on the laying water the car was wreaked every corner was off and he had gone headfirst into somebody else, there were debris all over the road, but they were out walking so where very very lucky, just after the Luxemburg road works somebody towing a large speed boat had been rear ended the boat came uncoupled and speared over the tow car putting a huge V in the roof.

thanks to all who made our holiday a holiday to remember.(y)
