Morocco 2015

Well the sun has been shinning throughout the day here at Sidi- Kaouki But about midday the wind decided it wanted to spoil things and its been blowing a howler ever since, sorry fellow Funsters but our Moroccan experiences has left us felling that January is in our opinion the wrong time to come here, reading the 'spill' on this interesting Country the end of Feb-March their Official Spring Time probably would have suited us better...not a grip but an observation:unsure::cool:

Its a bloody damn site warmer than where you're going back to, and thats a fact.

So we go to Sidi Ifni for the day and when we return there is a French plated van parked 1 metre from my bonnet and at right angle totally blocking the early morning breakfast sun from myself and Canopus ,:(

so i say to the owners why so close , your going to block my early morning sun , ? ?
so they reply , thats ok, come and sit on the sunny side of our van and cook your breakfast if you want ,:madder:

i think the french must eat tooooo many sardines , they seem to want to live like they are in a tin of them ..... :reel:

Bearing in mind the site holds about 500 vans and there are only about 75 vans on site .. :france::groan:

Mike have you tried , maps.me others have said it shows the new roads that are not on any maps and you can download it for off line use and use GPS co-ords
Yes I used Maps.me to find the road turning initially and marked it on the Michelin map. However my iPad does not have a Sim and therefore no GPS so it's not much use as a satnav on the move.

if you check , the funsters, the weather where we are in morocco is ...
you will know where to go and when ,

you need to keep south of the atlas until mid Febuary , we had 40c in Tafroute last year in Feb , yesterday was 31c here in Erkounte ,

If you look in the morocco 2013 / 14 postings you will see all the info of when and where to be at what time , is all there for you ,
look on the bright side you could be in 4 ft of snow in santander ... lol

I would question the temperatures that you have quoted, both this year and last year. Any temperature probe placed in direct sunlight will give an unrealistic reading, the air temperature is slightly different. Last year we certainly never experienced air temperatures anywhere near those that you have quoted and we stayed until mid March.

Funny thing...... the owner told us that we were the first English at Erkounte (over a week ago) after the Sidi Ifni camp sites were swept away..:) it was windy and cold:cry:

It will still be warmer here than UK - when your Moroccan 3 month visas up!

like i said , it all depends where you are  .....

Arrived safely at Tata and parked up outside the swimming pool - the municipal is chokka with long-termers so there's half a dozen here. Have to say we're not very impressed with what we've seen so far.

However the drive across was absolutely stunning, the best we've seen so far in Maroc but we didn't come on the "new road". Out of Tafraoute we took the R104 towards Agadir to the R106, which is a bit rough for around 10km - passable but slow. Despite following maps.me didn't spot any turnoffs and we continued to Igherm. Turned south on R109 for a short distance into the town centre then left onto P1085 just after a sharp right - not signposted and a bit narrow at first but fine once clear of the town. Then it's one road all the way to Tata, it's the back road but a good surface almost all the way. It goes over the mountains, through oasis', valleys, gorges and Berber villages before finally following the Oued Tata. There are occasional patches where the road has been washed away but conversely a stretch of 4-lane where we actually got into 6th gear!

This surely wasn't the fastest way but if you want spectacular scenery in abundance you've got to try it. Sometimes the obvious way isn't the best. Just a note, there are a couple of tight hairpin descents which larger units should take extra care at. Or it's a long way down.............!

Terry , Try the Kefta tagine at the municipal pool restaraunt , it still rates the best we have eaten in morocco ,
Tata is a bit strange to start with but wander across the road past the bread shop and down the alley onto a lovely square with cafes etc ,
you need to do a bit of exploring to find the best areas , there is a long street of market / souke if you walk into the town to the waterfall and turn left , also loads of mechanic streets , give Tata a chance to grow on you , we spent about 4 days there last time , we thought that the swimming pool area is a lot better than the campsite ,

Amendment - the road out of Ighrem is signed Tamsoult and it brings you into Tata from the north.

The P1085 was the road Mrs Satnav wanted us to use this morning and I decided I didnt like the look of it on the map. Probably would have been OK after all.

Blimey, you should have seen everyone's van stocked up for the crossing. I think we had the least, Gwen told us off and sent us off to buy more!!
I make the shopping list so far -

Touareg Rough x 6
Touareg Blanc x 9
4 slabs of beer (stork or similar)

Ken is Touareg the Maroc 1ltr bottles with screw tops?
Two slabs beer is correct but One box or similar white wine, forgot to mention we had the five litre boxes so whatever you can get guys 12 bottles would be good!

Can't

Can't recall a time when I sat outside in the UK drinking beer and wine in January!

Last year in Tafraoute we were extremely grateful to Malcolm Bolt for rigging up some shelter for us to sit under. It was so hot it was unbearable to sit any other place than in the shade. Disappointing this year maybe but still enjoying the company, scenery and of course the weather.... It has to be better than the UK.

The hairpins might have been a bit tight for your rig Mike but we passed a truck who seemed to have managed.

Valentines day in Mustafa's yard, how romantic is that.

How many people can claim that ! You'll dine out for years on that tale.

Is that a full respray ? As a matter of interest how much ?
