More grief about motorhomes

At least in scotland we do have one man on the case approaching the councils

Fantastic piece. Cameron May be the one person who can mobilise the authorities into doing something positive.

When there are so many campsites, cl's and cs's about why would anyone want to give motorhomers a bad name by wild camping? Are these people just Freeloaders?

But there isn't always campsites where you want them. Also what about the restriction some have of needing to stay for more than one night when you only want one night. Campsites are not going to be able to solve all the issues of motorhomes, not everyone uses them like caravans

Just curious - why do you assume wild camping equates to giving motorhomers a bad name?

It can do for sure, but then some people are capable of ruining reputations by using campsites, car parks, just about anything these days

That is a very biased view, if we stop somewhere for free or low cost we often eat out, if we have to pay more than a few Euro to stop we don't eat out. Simple economics for pensioners.
But as you well know, land and property prices in France and Spain are so much cheaper than here. You could sell your place in Sussex and buy a Chateau with acres and acres of land.
Building so called aires in areas that you want will be costly and will have to be paid for by the users.
I read the other day a council pay 20k a year for a disabled access auto toilet to be open in a carpark. That would be abused by some by dumping 5 days of shyte down the toilet
I also think a lot of people overestimate the value that the FLT’s give to a community.
Some of you are so tight, you squeak when you walk😀

Many aires in France are just car parks,,busy in the day time like uk ones with shoppers,,empty at night so they are already there..All they need adding is black waste drain,,a tap and a large waste bin. No vision in UK. BUSBY.

So why can’t caravans just park where the fancy takes them? But of course some do and we call them “travellers”! Just because we have Motorhomes doesn’t mean we own the countryside. We are no different to caravanners despite some considerIng themselves to be so. We are all holidaymakers when said and done and if not should pay to park somewhere as those of us who have homes pay rates etc.

Who said about not paying?

In my experience if you are prepared to pay you will find a site! Most sites allow 1 night. Those that don’t are usually in popular places and restrictions are probably at weekends, so I would try and avoid these.

Just had two nights at a site in Sandringham that had all this and more in abundance.

Our first and last time on a site in the high season.

Sandringham Eh? But I thought the Queen has dogs.

Why was it first and last tome on sit in high season. Do tell.

Yours was the first recommendation that fills my requirements. I wonder how many more I will get?

Geoff

When travelling its not worth the hassle booking into a site,,pitching up etc when all you need is a nights sleep..Also in Europe many lovely towns and villages which are really worth visiting have aires in the centre..Sites are usually out in the countryside..BUSBY.

I agree there are many attractive aires in France but I find it more relaxing to pull off onto a site en route where you are able to wind down after a long journey. I am fortunate in being able to make a journey part of the holiday and not having to dash to a destination.

I think you miss busby 's point

The aires are usually in town where as campsites are usually out of town. the former you just stroll to the center, restaurant, bar the later you are usually lucky if there is a pub within a mile of it.

Same here,,some days we only travel 20 miles visiting villages and towns..If we find a lovely village with a nice aire we stop for the night..Have a nice meal and a couple of drinks,,,Thats the beauty of a motorhome,,flexibility..BUSBY.

Only problem with that excellent idea is that they will be filled by the travelling community and all their rubbish for ever, until they are moved on, which takes forever because of their human rights. So forget that idea.
And yet, in thirty plus years of touring Europe only twice have we come across “itinerants” on Aires.

So what does Europe (mainland) do different?

Weird but gypsies in Europe just don't tend to leave the mess that Irish Travellers create in UK.Is it because Gypsies have wandered following work for centuries and Irish Travellers are a recent occurrence relatively..BUSBY.

We would normally avoid big sites like this but Mrs W fancied a trip to Sandringham, a lovely site and area, but to noisy for us.

No problems with the pitch either, no Pegs etc, and very friendly staff.

Earlier in this thread was a question asking whether Motorhomers would be willing to pay £5 at a camping site in order to “service” their van.

In France you can do that free at many Aires or pay €2 or €3 at others. In the U.K. , of course, a minimum of £5 would be considered cheap by many.

Whatever you think of wild campers, or FLTs as some prefer to call them, the U.K. needs to consider that Motorhomers do contribute to the local community.

Pubs, supermarkets, take away outlets and petrol stations are all businesses who benefit. They pay rates to the local Council. The local Council provide services to the local community at a lower price than they could if Motorhomers didn’t visit.

We are certainly not major contributors to local Council coffers but that is more their fault than ours, “provide the facilities and we will come.”

it almost sounds like a good idea for a film!

Needs the Trespass law changing in UK from a Civil offence to a Criminal one..BUSBY.
They were going to bring in a law similar to the Irish one, if it does happen probably won't be until next year now.
It worked in Ireland they all came over here.

Challans by any chance?

But not here a couple of years back

The one that immediately comes to mind is Concarneau. It was full of “itinerants”, all plugged into a few EHUs by using multi-way extension leads.

They didn’t cause us any problems and kept to themselves but it made us feel uncomfortable.

Unfortunately we can’t remember the other one but it was in the Provence/Langeudoc region.

We had them at Gruissan Plage years ago.
We watched a little kid pull a gun out of ' grandmas' handbag. He got a good hiding off the old lady.

As I guess you well know the gens du voyage are not all lavender fields and vin rouge
