MOBY GOES TO TURKEY. A tam and pups adventure.

I’ll throw my two penneth in - write stuff down - pros & cons of different ideas etc - it takes it out your head!

Listening to Tam, I was thinking the same thing.
Perhaps just downloading his thoughts, then pick one and think about what needs to be done to make that one less of an issue. Then move it, and it’s actions to a clean sheet that can be referred to again. Then, at a later date, do the same thing with another issue from the initial download, and so on.

I think this would help with the jumble of thoughts and torment that they create in the mind.

If you got residency somewhere do you get access to healthcare?
Far harder now. Most require private healthcare. spain does.Different if you are legally working.
I don't have the full entitlement I believe I'd have to stay in the UK when I retire whereas if I have the full thing I can claim it abroad I believe ( correct me if I'm wrong )
You're wrong  You can take the pension, whatever amount, anywhere.I don't have a full state pension as I was not allowed to pay for years before 2016 under the old scheme ,only the 3 after 2016,when the new state pension started, & up to when I drew it.

If they are cheap and haven't sold, I'm afraid there will be a reason. :(
I once went to look at a place that from the estate agent's blurb looked like a nice little country cottage, but was suspiciously cheap.

Got there to find that immediately to one side was a Truck & Bus Garage, with lots of dead & dying vehicles scattered around, lots of garage noise going on.
To the other side was a pig farm, which stank.
The rear garden backed onto MoD land, which was an artillery range

Ah OK.... I was going on something a few folk had said when I'd spoke about pensions before...I think it was Shrimp that had said something about having pension top up or benefit or something that meant you couldn't get it outside the UK but maybe I misunderstood.

At present I think I have 29 or 30 full years but require 35 years to get my full amount . But I have 18 years to gain that at the moment.

Is it still the case you don't get cost of living increases in state pension if living abroad ?
there is also a simple way around it if you do live i a country with no increases. You just return to the UK on extended holiday.Notify gov.uk that you are living there The pension rises to the correct level. You can go home again. The amount stays at the level you now leave at.

Apparently that's not the case in Portugal if I read that link posted by gpat correctly
I think that it only applies to South Africa, maybe Canada(?), if the UK gouvernment has an Bi - Lateral Agreement with a country you will get any increase in pension, certainly the case here in France and probably the rest of europe.

https://www.gov.uk/state-pension-if-you-retire-abroad/rates-of-state-pensionThat only applies in certain countries & none of them in the EU.

Tam

I thought that you might have put all this to one side while you are in Greece, but your post #1714 indicates not.

I have a couple of quick points to make on your State Pension:-

The missing 5 years can be made up buy paying up to 6 years in arrears, or you can make voluntary contributions over 5 years if not working in UK.. Neither is very expensive compared with a reduced pension if the 5 years is lost.

Payment of the pension in EU still gets increases, but I get mine paid into my UK bank account, so no worries if they change the rules, and you can exchange the money to other currencies at will instead of HM government sending it to one country each month.

You said a while back on this thread that you did not want to live off savings. I sailed off to Greece in my boat in 1978, with no house, and £118,500. So I was in similar situation to you now. Stock market crashed that autumn. My immediate decision is I have to get income, so hightailed it back to UK. I was fortunate that my qualification helped me walk into a job immediately. I only tell this in support of your intention to get work. Nobody can live off $155K, without taking huge risks of losing it all.

See my post#1750 below- have it paid into UK bank and transfer it yourself, at will. Increases follow.

Yes I'm aware I can buy the other 5 years required but having previously discussed it on here the general consensus was as I have 18 years yet before I can claim it there was no point in buying those years now as who knows what's round the corner. If I work again in a job I'm paying tax and ni contributions that 5 years will be paid before I retire. At the minute I can't see me being able to not work a proper job between now and retiring so that part I have put on back burner for now as it's not urgent. Nothing is urgent really but I think I will have to start giving some thought around April/may time if I'm going to buy a flat in Scotland then if I see anything that fits my needs I could have my sister view it on my behalf and buy before I got home ...giving me a base straight away.

But who knows lol ....that's subject to change.

I'm not going to spend the entire trip dwelling on the issues as that's not going to be fun for anyone ..

As said before I'm in a better position than many and for that I'm grateful , in some ways ...travelling keeps me out of trouble

These are all things I'd have been wanting to buy if I'd been in Scotland parked in mums driveway lol.

So much potential

saw the fiat but cant consider it at the moment due to health issues got some biopsy's on monday so things may be clearer soon

Maybe he's declared war,
A site I stay on in Alfriston has a Spitfire fly over several times a day doing the very expensive pleasure flights, I always have a little chuckle when there is a German van arriving as it flies over which is fairly regular.

Just up my street 👍 (y) (y) (y)
Is it still for sale?

My mate had a Fiat 126 we were always going to scrap yards looking for bits, all the ones we found had around 55000 - 65000 miles on, so I doubt there are many still going now.

He's a strange dude , he has a lovely dog a husky with beautiful blue eyes but he just leaves it outside all the time. I'm sure it was out all night too and it was pissin it down last night. I've said hello to him twice now and he's completely blanked me. His dog is forever over at my van door everytime I go outside or we go a walk etc it's there. He's moved his van now to where the Austrians were as they left this morning. He's been tinkering about doing things to the van this afternoon but now he has music on lol and that song came on blaring 🤣🤣 I had to Google the lyric deutschland uber alles lol as I never knew it was the national anthem I thought it was something from adolfs time ..

But jeeso .... any Greeks about will be thinking wtf

The 126 was smaller with engine in the back , my mates mum had one ... I changed the exhaust on it once and nearly lost a finger lol.

My other mate had a 127 though when I was around 18 and I loved that wee car . He then bought a 131 mirafiori which I later swapped him a cortina ghia for.

Don't see many 127 flats around ...especially in that condition

I had a new 131 Miafiori estate in bright fluorescent green.
Really quick and very stylish for its time.
Loved the drive and used to turn a few heads.
But the gearbox always sounded like you were rattling a tin full of nuts when idling😂

It was the first TAX free car I bought a short while after being posted to Germany in 1976.

I traded it after warranty ran out.

Yeah they were seriously quick for their time. I never had mine long ... I went through cars like socks back in those days .

Glad gus-lopez has cleared up Tam 's query about drawing UK pension abroad. What he said is exactly what I understood - you can take whatever state pension you've built up, anywhere in the world. However, there are only certain countries (which includes the whole of the EU) where it remains inflation-linked. So I guess not too much to be concerned about on that score.

I have always been a bit of a road rally enthusiast and although it was an estate it held its own. Maybe that’s why the gearbox rattled a bit. 🤭🤭

I know the feeling I think I changed car 6 times in 7 years between 1975 and 1982 and 2 of them were the new 131 followed by a new mk2 escort sport.

Then I had to calm down a bit a got a Volvo. 😂

Greeks really hate the Germans after they made the Greeks put in austerity measures before the EU bailed them out. One of the measures was putting their pension age up from 50.

The year we went was the year that happened and the advise was to put UK badges on the front and back of the van so you didn't get taken for German.

Note the UK stickers.

The thought of Tam in a 126 is very amusing!

My mum had two of them. OK for her at 5' nothing, but when I drove it as a 6'2" skinny youth I used to have to scream it in 2nd gear then change straight into 4th - 3rd gear was not an option, my knee was hard up against the steering wheel, no room! The floorpan rotted out in the first one, just for a laugh whilst repairing that I took it for a drive whilst it had no front seats in - it was no problem being sat in back seat driving it. They were ridiculously small and underpowered, only having a 650cc twin air cooled lump.

As a 6'2" not at all skinny middle aged bloke I doubt I'd be able to get in it now!

That Fiat 127 brought back some memories. I had a127 sport in black. It revved to 7250 and made 75hp at the wheels, after some carb and air filter work. It used to pop out the driveshafts if you took a corner extremely fast. It also had the standard wire mesh, newspaper and filler rear window surrounds. That you could poke a finger through.

It also used to tow my racing Lambretta!

It was an utter hunk of rust riddled crap. But I loved it.

Northernraider perhaps you could entertain your German 'friend' with some rousing bagpipe music, best played in the early hours and even better if you can find a utube of someone learning 🤣
must admit we met a lovely German couple in Mazarron, campsite, still in contact, they would talk to anyone, had 2 lovely dogs too.
