MOBY GOES TO TURKEY. A tam and pups adventure.

Tam if you have any berry/red cordial make yourself a glass with hot water, add some cold water to make it drinkable then sip it and breath in the vapour too, it helps to clear sinuses and sooths a sort throat so long as you don't make it too strong. I once recommended this to a young chap I was on the phone with who was snuffling like mad, he had to ring me back a couple of days later with the answer to my query and he told me it has worked a treat.

Elderberry is a good tonic. I've made elderberry vinegar and a splash of that in with grated ginger, honey and lemon is my homemade lemsip these days. Plus a couple of paracetamol if necessary.

Tam you've been on the road a long time now with colder weather and stressful situations your immune system is probably a bit low so struggling to shift the bug. Rest, eat really healthily and try to avoid stress (easier said than done on the road I know)

Hope you feel better soon I was out for dinner last night and all 5 people were just getting over colds and coughs I think because the weather has been the worst on record. You're not missing anything here that's for sure!

I can't find any squash/cordial type drinks here .. in fact they're almost impossible to find outside the UK. I normally bring a stash with me but smaller van meant I didn't have as much this trip and I ran out just after new year.
Might have to find a pharmacy today though as I'm now on my last strip of paracetamol and ibuprofen and cold still not gone. I'd say it improves daily buy still have really bad coughing fits at times where I nearly throw up. Throat was so swollen last night...tongue too . Anyway ill look for a pharmacy today and see what I can find.

In other news I need to make a decision what to do with blu, she's now 6 months . Looking online there's differing opinions and most say "speak to your vet" but I don't have a regular vet and it wouldn't help just now anyway. Many say sterilising at 6 months is best others says for larger breeds it's better to hold off to say 9 months when they've grown a bit more. But also say its best to do it before their first heat as it helps to reduce the chance of cancer when older etc. At the minute she's not showing any sexual in male dogs just wants to play really but.

Turkey I think would be cheaper to have her spayed than crazy UK prices which would be the case if I wait till she's 9 months.

Anyone any thoughts?

Antibiotics for you and spay for Blu. Make sure you get it the right way round🤭🤭🤭
Vet told me he thought the earlier the better as it was a much smaller op. and quicker recovery. Difficult to know what’s best with differing professional options.
Look after yourself

We have always been advised that spaying should be after their first season and before the second. Not sure if there is a hard and fast rule. Sometimes it's hard to spot the first season though so maybe 9 months is a good bet. I think it's too do with hormones. The greater the presence of hormones the higher the risk of cancer later in life. The main reason for spaying though should be to avoid unwanted puppies, anything else is a bonus.

We were advised the same as gpat and to wait 2 months after 1st season ended but I'm sure you will hear differing opinions. Maybe try contacting a breeder of a similar sized breed to see what they say as we were told the size also has some bearing on the timing. We have a small to medium Cockapoo bitch about 11 lbs for comparison. Unfortunately it's all bloody guesswork at best....

Kgs not lbs

I think anytime between 6-9 months - do you actually know how old she is?
Yes, after 1st heat is considered to be optimum but not critical.
Do you really want to deal with the chaos of her on heat?

Best option is to find a vet somewhere you are happy to stay for a few days, so you can go back if she needs any follow up.

...and get yourself seen to as well [cough]

I think early spaying can lead to incontinence issues. I would leave it a little later. I don't think waiting until at least 9 months to a year will increase cancer risks and those are pretty low anyway.

See there's the problem lol 😆 different folks have different opinions .

Jade was done at 6 months , ela at roughly 9/10 months

The couple I travelled in Morocco with were leaving the pup they rescued till it had had its first heat and then they got caught out in Bulgaria as the pup went in to heat they didn't know and when it was off the lead it got mounted by a stray dog and she kept running away from them back to the stray .. so they then had the problem of having to find a vet pronto to get the morning after pill for dogs.

Having not had a dog in heat I'm worried in case I don't know and she gets caught my a stray too.

And of course the timescale, she was 6 months at the start of April so that means if I wait till 9 months that would be July when I'll be in Germany or summat or then back in the UK.

She's definitely not fully grown yet but she's now as tall and as long as ela ...just not as broad.

With large breed dogs the current uk vet recommendation seems to be to leave them until after they have finished growing.

We waited till after first season as I had read that but vet friend then told me I could have done it before and it would have been better (cancer risk). First season was miserable … she was really unhappy, had to be on lead whenever out - my dogs usually get off lead but 2 local unneutered dogs put paid to that.

I would definitely get her done before the first heat as you’re living in the van & she mixes with a lot of strays! I think the risk to her (&you) of unwanted pregnancy far outweighs the future risk (if any) of cancer. I don’t suppose you can get hold of those doggy period pants where you are either! We had Molly done after her first heat, but couldn’t get it done quick enough, as we didn’t want to go through that again!

We had our bitch done before her first heat at about six months. I had different advice from various sources but since we really couldn’t take any chances. She is nearly nine now with no ill effects to date.

After 1st season was traditional, but may well be different nowadays with the big C so prevalent.
I don’t think you will go too far wrong having it done in the next few weeks. You would hope a vet would advise against it if they thought it was too soon.

Having has a lot of dogs in my lifetime I personally didn't like to have my bitches spayed and all lived to a great age. 14 for 1 Rottweiler which is almost unheard of now but with your lifestyle it would be better to have her spayed after her first season. The only one I had spayed before a season ended up incontinent all her life and she was put down with cancer! So it's swings and roundabouts. Should you have the unfortunate accident that you miss a silent season and a dog ties with her if you take her to the vet straight away they will spay her and avoid and unwanted litter.
Happy travels with your beautiful pups

OK so still a few different opinions .

In my own mind I had planned to have her done at 6 months that's why I was looking online again the last few days ....if it wasn't for the fact we live in the van fulltime and we do encounter a lot of strays I'd happily wait till she was fully grown. But I'm swayed towards having her done either before I leave Turkey in 2 weeks or while I'm in Bulgaria.... but will see how things go . I might pop in to a vets in the next week and see what their advice is.

I think she would be a nightmare in heat if there are strays around and I'd be worried letting her off the lead because even when they're not around they've a habit of just appearing from nowhere. I'd rather avoid her being mounted at all if possible.

Tam, I think you need to see a doctor & get some anti-biotics

Can't help with Blu.
amoxicillin i did tell him its no good worrying about antibiotic overuse if you die over a coughing fit friend of mine had a heart attack and died over coughing about 6 weeks ago

As to your cough - if it’s tickly, mainly in your throat & you bring up nothing, or some clear phlegm, it’s probably viral & antibiotics are useless. If it’s on your chest & you are bringing up green or yellow stuff, it’s probably bacterial & you need antibiotics. I hope you feel better soon! Remember the limit for paracetamol is 24 hours, & lots of cold & flu remedies also contain paracetamol- wouldn’t want you accidentally overdosing!

Yes it's not in my chest, no wheezing or bringing anything up its just tickly and irritating. I don't think I have a chest infection . The blocked ears comes and goes. 2 days ago really blocked yesterday not so much but one is blocked again today. I was going to find a pharmacy today but then I realised it was Sunday so I'll have a look tomorrow . I think some lemsip or something would help as hot drinks...coffee etc seem to help .

I've been taking a mix of paracetamol and ibuprofen. From morning to bedtime but nothing overnight but I'll run out of those today

Lemsip contains paracetamol so that has to be instead of one of your doses of tablets. Try a steam inhalation (with Vics, Olbas oil or eucalyptus if you have any) for your sinuses (ears).

Aye I don't have any of that unfortunately. I've a load of other crap but nothing usefull lol

That was quite funny ... I was lying on the sofa petting ela and of course everyone gets jealous so the next minute I had jade milo ela and blu all jumping on me wrestling and carrying on ... I looks up and there's 2 police men looking through the window 😆 I said " oh hello" and of course everytime I say hello the dogs all start barking its like a trigger word to them . So I got up opened the side door and they waved hello...asked if I was Turkish I said no Scottish...they both smiled said welcome to turkey then he used translator to ask if I was OK, if I needed anything or they could help in anyway. Very pleasant guys ...I said no everything was OK and just asked to make sure it was OK to stay here .... he said yes no problem and should I need any assistance to call 112.

Now that's my kind of police ... polite, friendly and welcoming
