MOBY GOES TO TURKEY. A tam and pups adventure.

Sounds like your having a smashing trip tam! More power to you,,, ps,,your never alone with this site mate,,, but I do know what you mean! xxxxxxxx
Aye never alone with the Internet.... but sometimes you need the face to face contact eh.

And a few hugs here and there never go a miss. I think this trip is officially the longest I've ever been on my own lol.

Well I've only been here a month and not been inland too much yet so I'll leave my final review of turkiye till the end but my experience so far.

Weather wise it's similar to Greece this time of year... colder in the North and inland but south coastal its pretty good, not tropical by any means but in the last 2 weeks it's been mostly sunny and between 20-25° daytime and 10-14° overnight. Had a few rain showers. A few storms and 2 days where it rained nearly the whole day.

There's a lot of beautiful places , coastline ,mountains , but the downside is that some places can have a fair bit of litter and rubbish around( nowhere near as bad as Morocco, but more than greece ) which is a shame as there's plenty if bins about and plenty of council workers cleaning up rubbish etc but there's a certain element who just don't care and I've witnessed on more than a few occasions people just throwing their trash on the ground.

Fuel is reasonably cheap , averages between £1.06 and £1.14 a litre , amazingly its dearer in the bigger towns than out in the sticks. Lpg is about £0.52 a litre.
Food shopping, meat is quite expensive, can't get pork so it's mostly beef or chicken , beef is pretty pricey , chicken probably about average , fish is very reasonable so I've been buying more fish than beef. Junk food is cheap , juice ,crisps etc , alcohol I don't know as I've not bought any here. I've not eaten out anywhere , only had one takeaway kebab thing and wasn't overly impressed ...the shop opposite my mum was definitely better 🤣. Fruit ,veg very cheap

I would like to eat out more but I tend not to do it on my own , I prefer company. There's not a great deal of travellers here it's mostly local Turkish campers with the odd German or French about , the few brits I have encountered despite attempting to strike up conversation it hasn't been reciprocated. I think the experience would be better as a couple or if travelling with friends.

There are stray dogs and cats everywhere, it's rare to find any park up where there aren't any but is possible. But they all have been well fed and in very good health and 95% are very friendly.

No one hassles you , people are mostly friendly although I don't think many speak english so I think that puts most off from trying to converse.

I've seen and heard several folk I follow from Instagram having met locals who've invited them to join them at picnics ,bbq's etc but it's not happened to me lol.... that may be a language thing or because I'm a big single guy with no pretty female to oggle at ...who.knows lol.

At this time of year finding parkups is very easy , water is very easy . There are quite a lot of wc in carparks etc that you can use to empty black waste. It seems common practice with the local campers.

I've personally found it a far easier country to travel in than Morocco, its not as warm obviously but you don't get hassled, you aren't faced with the heartbreaking poverty or the neglected animals etc so for me that is a big bonus.

On the whole Greece is still my favourite country to travel in but I'd return to Turkey
If you're not looking for tropical weather over winter just a pleasant t shirt and shorts climate then its a good alternative to Spain... but its obviously a lot further away so costs a fair bit more to get here.

I'm the furthest I've ever been from home at the minute.
Not necessarily, have you decided where "home" is going to be?
Have you not found anywhere you would rather be than Scotland yet, or have you not give it much thought yet.

There's a few places I'd rather live at least for a while other than Scotland, it's just there's a lot of barriers in my way. There's always been some barriers when trying to relocate , language, ties to family etc .. but there just seems so many now it gets confusing. The biggest issue really is I'm a long way from retirement and whilst ive a bit in the bank ive not enough to last me till retirement. I will need to return to work at somepoint. I can if I wish take the next year work free ... and I'm probably going to do that as I won't be back in UK early enough to pick up seasonal work. I've still not sussed it out though . There's nothing really in Scotland for me now. The family I have there we aren't really that close. But not sure I can afford to live in many other parts of the UK.

So as yet nope I still don't know where home will be . On paper for now it will be my sisters as I need to keep some form of address.

What I need to do is find a partner in crime...or a few other likeminded vanlifers. Might try my luck with that in South blighty when I return in summer.

So after the ancient city we drove 30 miles inland to the koprulu canyon ... this place is very popular with white water river rafting , there's literally dozens of companies all up the river doing raft rides ... not my thing as I can't swim very well and I've a fear of drowning so you wouldn't get me on one if you paid me.

But the scenery is beautiful and again there's a few old bridges etc left over from the roman era. I had a lovely parking spot above the old roman Bridge with great views .

I forgot to say the photo showing all the rubbish was just below the viewpoint for the canyon and the bridge. Obviously people come to admire the view and then toss their trash over the side . If someone could explain to me the mentality of people like this I'd be grateful as it beggers belief.

Unfortunately the UK appears to be going in the same direction.
More and more litter and graffiti appearing every year.
Local councils do nothing - just blame it on lack of funds.
It really makes me angry!

I just can't fathom how people go to somewhere because they consider it beautiful etc and then actively destroy it for the next person or indeed themselves should they ever return..it just don't make sense to me.

Folk actually sit amongst rubbish here in parks and on beaches and sunbathe and eat ...it never enters their minds to clean the area around them.

But they obviously understand it affects tourism because when you go to the resort areas they are always well kept.. People cleaning the beach etc.

Thanks for taking the time to write about your reflections on Turkey so far... Personally, I found it really interesting and helpful. We only 'discovered' the country a few years ago and were generally impressed, although we haven't taken the van... yet. ;)

Same as you, we like Greece a lot. (y)

Brilliant photos Tam thanks for showing me places i had no idea existed, realise now how, restrictive my holiday there was.

I think like most countries there's probably lots of tourists come to Turkey on package holidays stay in hotels and never go outside of the town/village their hotel is in. I used to work with guys that always went all inclusive and that's what they did. Think that's the beauty of a camper ....and if you've lots of time.

We went on a package holiday to Jamaica (Sandals resort) we were told never to leave the complex as it was too dangerous outside, guns, drugs etc. We ended up hiring a local taxi driver with an American couple and went all over the island. It was beautiful and the people were so friendly. We would have missed out if we had stayed in the hotel, where all you could do was eat, drink, swim and sunbathe {I know I've had a hard life:giggle:) There is so much to be seen of this world if you can venture out of your comfort zone. After that we hired local drivers in every country we went to so we could see the real side. Now we have the van(y)

Unless you have kids I don't see the attraction of all inclusive, I'm fed up of the same things after the first day. I can quite see the attraction if you have kids wanting drinks and stuff all day but the thought of having to eat in the same place every day would drive me nuts, I like to get about and try different stuff everyday. Similar with cruises although I haven't been on one so not really a judge on them but I think I would want to jump ship after the first day.

It's not glamorous by any means but we have friends who do full time van dwelling in and around Brighton and Hastings if you did end up around the South and wanted some tips. I'm sure it wouldn't be too hard to get some agricultural seasonal work too.

I have only been on one 'All inclusive holiday and that was a skiing holiday in Andorra.

We were 150m from the chairlift and we were there for the skiing, nothing else so it suited us fine, especially since Sebastian our table waiter brought us more wine than we could drink.

I imagine if one went for a sailing/surfing holiday the same would apply

Yeah that could be handy ..

Doesn't need to be glamorous, my mums driveway wasn't glamorous either.

And I never thought about agricultural work actually ...that's an idea.

So yeah any tips are most welcome.

Littering and dumping rubbish is a mindset thing.
Those that do it by have been brought up with it their whole lives. It just passes down the generations. Most that do it have no concept of the wider environmental damage they are doing and care even less.

I feel exactly the same as you about those all inclusive places chaser went on a cruise once NEVER again(n)
Don’t do the Maldives then,
We were on a stunning island, sea planes into the lagoon of the island. Water bungalow! Stunning snorkelling. You could walk around the perimeter of island on the beach in about 30 minutes.

Did a bit of snorkelling and Was on first name terms with just about every fish in the lagoon after a few days😂

Dream place but a few days was enough for me.
Wife absolutely loved it so we went another twice to different islands which are much the same.

The sea plane flights on and back to Mali were really interesting with stunning views.

Apologies for the thread drift Tam.

I was in a French carpark for the night and around midnight a group of youngsters turned up in a car and a couple of motorcycles, they sat by a park bench and eating pizzas and takeaway boxes of food and drinks, they had laughs and a few times a bit noisy but when they finished a couple of them rounded up all the waste and walked right across the carpark to put it all in the bin, dropping some outside of the bin too only to pick that up as well to also put right into the bin….

I expected it to be left or dumped 🤔 all in the up bringing I suppose but I have seen many times in villages the kids from schools in yellow vest all walking around town with litter pickers and bags of rubbish….

Yep I've seen many doing the Same. It's not everyone that's for sure just some that are surprising.. I seen a middle aged couple both leave coffee cups and a fag packet on a bench this afternoon... just stood up and walked off leaving them sat on the bench

The first time we went loved it, and said lovely but expensive, 😉 three years later we went again 😲 it was still expensive........... but just having the experience of a lifetime swimming with a 20' whale shark 👍 changed our minds 😁 after all it's only money. 🤔

Thinking about it maybe another visit before they disappear. :Eeek:
😎 Bob.
