Lifestyle Change Can Happen In Seconds...

The most worrying thing for me is that in the opening post, the poster states that it was medical issues that caused him to not get the proper licence.

Let me clarify for you.

I carefully used the word "issues" and, of course, folk quite reasonably take this to mean I am unwell physically... but this is not the case.

My "medical issues" are a massive fear of doctors and a complete lack of trust in pharmaceutical based medicine.

I was "forced" several years ago to undergo a "medical" examination and, as I suffered the humiliation, I promised myself I wouldn't do it ever again.

I do have minor mobility issues in so much as walking any distance is a tad difficult but other than that, I am as fit as a 72 year old, overweight, Fray Bentos eater can be

Add to this a loathing of the cold, damp weather in Blighty and the cost of flights, hotels, English breakfasts etc whilst finding a doctor to give me the medical and waiting for the DVL to supply the licence in the knowledge it all has to been done again in three years made me make the decision I did.

In the nearly 20 years I have been in Portugal I have only had to show my licence to the GNR half a dozen times... no problems each time.

Ok... I broke the licensing law.

I got caught.

I've taken my punishment. (€1200) and some total strangers' grief on a forum, baying for my blood and condemning me as a potential murderer.

Well...what is done, is done...

I will no longer actually drive the Hymer on the road. It is a well known vehicle around these (very rural) parts, as is "that friendly old Englishman who lives in the woods", and I have great people who will drive it for me when I need to refill with gas and servicing etc or the odd trip to the beach.

If I am caught driving it again myself, apparently the powers that be will seize the vehicle and supply me with a holiday in a very low class hotel with no access to burgers or pies.

I MUST stop now or I will upset Mr Raybeck by revealing all my life on a public forum...

They are not 'rules', they are legal requirements.

Tell that to the 1 million or so uninsured in the UK.........

.....3rd party insurance should be included with a driving licence - might encourage some to actually get one and stop young drivers being criminalised because they cannot afford insurance

...........but hey would the insurance industry stand for that?

JJ

You need my Dr. - form is filled in before I arrive for the appointment. I just have to sign and collect it.

When I change my UK Licence for a Polish one in the near future I will not have to do a medical to retain C1. Makes a nonsense of cross-border rules.

JJ I do feel for you and wish you no ill......there is a But..and I am not Baying for blood

I wear glasses just like many of us do, to have a licence to drive is a privilege not a right we all need to be fit to drive. I have my eyes tested it's tedious but has to be done.

If you want to drive get a medical examination......no if's...no but's, if you consider your fit to drive prove it.... just get a medical, only kidders kid themselves at 70 everyone has to have a medical. Just down sizing isn't going to cut it..........Driving licence recognition and validity – Portugal you need a medical.

Sorry Mr Coolcats... no way am I going to plough through all those rules and regs... but thanks for trying to educate me... old dog, new tricks.

JJ then don't Drive...ever, I for one would report a driver who did not have a licence.

I really appreciate your kind words Sir Old Mo but, as an honest man, I have to admit that I was aware my licence wasn't exactly correct...

$hit........ I have been rubbing shoulders with a crimbinal.... :Eeek:

I do have insurance and tax and mot thank you very much.

If the rules are the same as over here.

Not having a valid license invalidates your insurance.

Not looking to start an argument just stating a fact ?

They could check if your driving licence is valid like they could check your claims record when they take your money but they don't.............................WHY?

Could it be that they might want to invalidate any claim made.........or am I just being cynical?

Sounds a bit far fetched to me. Even I didn’t have this sort of authority as a police traffic officer Inspector.

Would I be correct in saying there isn’t a road traffic act that says you have to pull over.

I know it’s courtesy to do so and I always do where appropriate.

I certainly wouldn’t breach red traffic lights though.

Fair play to you straight and honest reply ?

It seems some of you are so offended and just must say so. Would those of you who feel so outraged by this, like me to arrange a boxing ring so you can line up and give him a whack for his law-breaking. You'll be in no danger, he won't hit you back he's a quaker and it might make you feel better.

A bit unfair of you I think Jim

JJ decided to post up his mishap, the accident, he also decided to post his lack of license for that vehicle.

Everyone knows on here you post something up there will be many and varied replies.

But, but, but...I wasn't a crimbinal when we were hanging out, Sir Old Mo!

By the way... I hope you don't mind but I have a pet now on QMJ.

I have named him in honour of you.

Maurice The Mole...

He is practically blind but keeps going on and on about an old tea urn.

JJ then don't Drive...ever, I for one would report a driver who did not have a licence.

But I do have a licence... the police checked it on Friday...

and, incidentally, I don't believe it is usual practice on Fun to tell others how to live.

Do you vote Tory by any chance?

No way Mr (Mrs/Ms) Scotch mist.

I abhor all forms of violence... I blame my upbringing.

Have they the ability to check your license?

from DVLA website......make of it what you will..

Third party access which is secure and convenient
At the moment third parties can access driver data using DVLA’s existing channels. This includes electronic data links through commercial intermediaries, our premium rate phone line, in writing to DVLA or by asking the driving licence holder to show their physical licence.
We’re currently engaging with stakeholders to develop a range of new, secure and convenient data enquiry services that will meet their needs. These services are being developed with the appropriate assurance framework in place to protect driver information security.

Does that mean you don’t have to take a Portuguese driving test if you are residing there.

Just asking out of interest.

Well I’ll be jigured.

I know it’s possible to obtain a unique number for vehicle hire companies to check if you have points etc.

But it looks like they will be supplying info in the future without involving the license holder ?

UPDATE.

Following a long meeting last night with two of my people (for those Funsters who know, Mosca and Fatima) my blessed Hymer is no longer for sale.

It will remain as my home on Quinta Majay for the foreseeable future.

For any of the Algarve "gang" that I often meet up with over the festive season, be prepared to be introduced to a new (very) Stealth Wagon...

Nothing cast in stone but hopes are high right now...

Sorry Princess but I knew it was past your bedtime.

By the way... I was just thinking...

You have a licence that allows you to drive vehicles over 3,500 kilos, don't you? :whistle2:
