Jane & Rog’s retirement tour, Morocco 2023

Whoops, looks like a double post fail there.

Just wondered if people were still interested in me doing this now the excitement of the crossing is over? It is all on the blog anyway
Only just catching up with this thread, it is a good read so please keep going.
I much prefer to read a thread with a bit of banter, tend not to read blogs.

Just an observation, when looking at many of the images you post it appears that despite the general run down areas and lots in need of new rendering and so on that the areas are clean and none or very little graffiti. In the images in the above post a Donkey in an alleyway all clean. They appear to have little but look after what they have.
Still enjoying your posts and pleased your both on the mend.

I agree - very little deliberate stuff like graffiti, and towns are clean. But common spaces like picnic areas, coastline etc are massively full of rubbish.

Great trip and story. I'm also enjoying the photos. But I've got to say it's irresponsible to let the dog off and kill other peoples animals. The dog needs training properly and so does Rog, imho.

We also have a large dog and we'd be horrified if he thought going around killing other animals willy nilly was ok.

Apart from that, enjoy the trip and I hope you get your heating sorted sooner or sooner!

Absolutely agree, if it came here and killed our hens ,it would be shot.

I’m not sure we’re moaning about the heating:)
A couple reasons for not getting the webasto fixed locally: I’ve been speaking to webasto and their opinion is it’s not a fault in the unit itself (no error code) and the most likely problem is a faulty temp sensor. Further investigation needs their diagnosis software. Of course they would say that but it sounds reasonable (no error code etc.)
I didn’t think the temp sensor would be easy to source here so decided to wait. I might try and remove it from the circuit myself but the little fan heater is actually a fine solution.
The problem with that is it will only work on ehu and you have to use Moroccan showers etc. If it's a thermostat it could possible be replaced with a switch as a temporary measure, but your choice obviously. Hope you enjoy the rest of your trip.

daveclare I (Rog) take responsibility for Flynn’s actions yesterday but I do think this is a blog meant to be entertaining so doesn’t contain all the facts. It’s trying to be warts and all so this made it in but it’s never the whole story. Flynn is pretty well trained but he’s trained as a gun dog. When we rescued him he already knew how to flush birds. We think he was abandoned and needed rescue either because he gets too excited next to the gun or because he doesn’t just flush birds :-(

Unfortunately it’s something we’ve not managed to train him out of.

The situation I was in with him felt pretty secure, I couldn’t see the birds and I was on a lane with thick thorny hedges over a meter high. I didn’t fully realise how thick and thorny Flynn’s brain was. Not an excuse I know but not quite as reckless as it sounds.

Either way you can rest assured I did feel pretty shitty about this and Jane was also pissed off with me when I returned.

Also, I did offer to get money for the owner. He refused and was more interested in showing me his dogs and asking about Flynn. He also refused recompense again this morning when I bought bread from him.

chaser thanks. I’ll make a note of that.

We had a failure of our Webasto a few years ago and in the winter too. No error codes and it turned out to be a simple fuse replacement. This was diagnosed by a Wenasto technician near Birmingham and he told us he had changed the 10 amp fuse with a 15 amp fuse. He went on to say this is a good fix as the when the webasto ages it uses more power when firing up and the wiring can take the extra 5 amp power. Its been faultless ever since.

On the dog issue , even though Flynn has had a rabies jab etc. I would be concerned letting him off a lead unless I was certain no other animals/ dogs were around ( ie beach)to prevent him being bitten by a rabid animal or getting an Infection.

I didn't say that to be nasty, just a fact, and if you can't stop it killing things it should be kept on a lead or you are going to end up with a dead dog. :(

For god sake…..let’s leave the bloody chicken and dog escapade alone now🤬. Rog, well explained, we know your challenges, we have a German Shorthaired Pointer, mad as a box of frogs.
let’s all move on. Great blog and don’t worry, i am sure the vast majority on here know you and Flynn are not intentionally culling Morocco’s chicken population! 🤪
please keep the warts an all version! Happy travels! 👍

Now you are scrambling the thread!
At least I didn't bring up the dreaded Sea Trout issue.!
As an aside! Has this thread been absorbed into the Morocco 2023 Thread ? The reason I ask is that I did a search for it and this was the only thread that came up which I assume is more of a personal blog than a open discussion for Funsters in Marroco or others wanting to add relevant comments.

Sorted! The other thread is titled Morocco 23 and this is why I could not find it when doing a search. I shall now dissappear! Safe travels.

Still really enjoying your “honest”well written thread. On the positive side I‘m sure a number of potential Morocco bound, dog owning Funsters have learnt something as a result of Flynn’s escapades over the past few weeks. The entire thread is a great tutorial and will be a great point of reference going forward. By the way Flynn is a beautiful dog.

Get that BBQ fired up!! Forget KFC here's RFC!!
Make your self a little outfit (incorporate your new hat), send Flynn out for stock and sell from the campsite (owner gets 20%) Boom!!

We are back in Spain! Apart from the ferry leaving two hours late, everything went very smoothly. I can’t add anything to the vexed question of exactly what dog documentation is needed, as no one even so much as looked at Flynn, let alone his pet passport.

Our decision to leave was based solely on Dad still being in hospital that morning, and it feeling like the wrong thing to go north-east via the Rif rather than north-west via motorways to Tanger Med. Sadly, due to being upset by some comments on here yesterday, I didn’t check my phone all morning, and there was an email at 10:30am from my sister-in-law saying that Dad was at last back in his care home. What a relief, after a 2½ weeks of worry!

But Dad’s still bed-bound, and we only had about 2 more weeks we could have spent in Morocco before we had to get back for his 90th birthday, so I don’t regret leaving early really. Morocco will be there another time, and we will be back. Because, despite all our woes this trip, it was fantastic - and what made it the most were the people. Well, the weather and the people :) They were so welcoming, honest and friendly. I wouldn’t have slept as easily on some wasteland in Ashford or Bradford as I did in Tisnit, nor would my dog’s (and my) sins in chicken killing have been as graciously forgiven anywhere in the UK.

I might pop back here with some thoughts on travelling to Morocco and what we’ll do differently next time, if that’s of interest. But for now I must recommend TerryL ’s document on travelling to Morocco with a motorhome, which you can find in resources, and which was invaluable background reading for us. Thanks Terry!

Thanks to the vast majority of you for being so supportive and useful on this thread, we both appreciated it massively. See you in Morocco in 2024?

Don’t let the few negative comments change what you do, think or say. Sadly there will always be a small group of people (in any walk of life, even a forum) who will be hell bent on ‘making their points’ but rise above and work with the overwhelming majority view.

Safe travels back for your fathers birthday celebrations.

Thanks for a great thread and photos on your travels etc in Morocco. Really enjoyed it. Hope your dad recovers quickly now he is home and he has a great birthday looking at all your holiday photos and listing to your tails. (y)

Great blog, thanks for taking the time to write it. We have toured Morocco a few times on a motorbike, now thinking about doing the same in the motorhome. 👍👍

Really enjoyed your blog and look forward to your future adventures! I think you’ve made the right decision - my mum is 90 and quite a worry too. As you say, there will always be another year.

As for those posts … some people should have listened to their grannies when they said, ‘if you don’t have anything nice to say , say nothing at all’. I presume everyone’s granny said that 😂.

Safe travels …
