Jane & Rog’s retirement tour, Morocco 2023

He says “somethings obviously not right it should take a bit of force to pull them apart you need a tool to do it.
Obviously it’s not as though you can go back to your dealer out there. But it needs addressing once back home. Is there any slack in the pipes , a bend. To cut a bit off and re insert ?”
(He doesn’t “do” the forum btw he’s sat in bed drinking coffee next to me telling me what to say 😊)
Hope you can fix it and the heating and that your dad continues to improve. Still Loving your thread.

Have the pipe got inserts fitted?
We used 15mm hep2o pipes in our van.
The same as domestic plumbing.
You fit inserts into the cut pipe before fitting together.
We have never in 15 years had fittings coming apart.
Whilst all this info is great it does not help the situation now.
But it’s could in the future when home.

Push pipe into fitting. Pull pipe out of fitting, and this should now pull out the lock ring about 3-4mm. Then push the pipe back in whilst holding the lock ring out. The pipe should go in the 3-4mm that the lock ring initially came out. Ideally then install the lock collet.

When the fittings come off, is the pump on? Is the system under pressure?

I am sure the same fittings are used by lots of manufacturers but for some reason there are many reports of them failing on Adrias.

We have had torrential rain twice in Morocco. On the last trip we were at the dunes and we could see the storm lightning approaching from miles away, real heavy rain for 12 hours. Two days later the water in the Wadis were flowing over the bridges. Made an interesting ride on a bike.

I had thought the same, is the system de pressured when driving?

Thanks for all the advice. I wasn’t aware that they need to pull out slightly after pushing in. I’ll try and achieve that but the pipes are very tight.

As Jane said we’ve had leaks here since the van was new. Adria have made a manifold out of several T and elbow connectors. It’s two of these joints: pipe to T and T to T that leak when the pump runs. It feels like the whole “system” is under mechanical stress at 90 degrees to the connections which causes them to open slightly.

The pump will stay powered whilst driving so I do switch it off when we’re moving.

These fittings all have the locking clips in place but I don’t think they have inserts in the pipes. I have a few spare connectors but they’re all straight or elbow so I can’t rebuild the manifold - even if I did have the confidence to not make it worse in doing that :-)

It’s currently not leaking after 3 hours on the motorway and my plan is to keep patching it up to get us home to a proper workshop.

To that end I’ve also made the seat this plumbing is under easier to disassemble - it doesn’t help that our step up transformer is wired over the panel they’re under

We’re in Mohammedia, Camping Mimosa. Our plan to head from Marrakech to Azrou was foiled because it’s snowing there now, and we’re not kitted out for that sort of weather.

In fact, the weather is a bit colder and wetter everywhere. We still don’t have heating or hot water in the van, and woke to a temperature of 9 degrees inside. (3 outside.)

In fact, we’re generally feeling low. Rog caught a cold a few days ago, and I got it yesterday - mine is still at the fluey, shivery stage so I don’t feel up to much decision making.

My father’s still in hospital, and my brother leaves for his work trip to India today.

We were thinking of heading over to Meknes, rather than retrace our steps on the Atlantic coast, but I was wondering if it would be better to zip back to Tangier Med, and be back on the same continent as Dad. Easier to get a flight home, and not leave Rog with getting Denby and Flynn out of Morocco alone. And back to hot showers, central heating and log fires. Rog thinks we’ll regret not staying on in Morocco. Difficult decisions, and I don’t feel that I’m in a great place to make the right one.

I think you've come north to early and you ve alsk missed a lot, if you were to head back down to say Essaouira - Agadir you would probably find the sun again and should you need to do a fast retreat you have marrakech or Agadir airports both with regular UK flights close by. Feb in Spain isn't likely to be any warmer. What's wrong with your heating and what is it? The Moroccans are pretty good at fixing stuff

We came north to be heading in the general direction of home, with Dad still in hospital. If only they’d let him out, I’d feel a lot better. And I think the flights from Spain are cheaper, and there’d be no issues leaving the van behind if I flew home, like there might in Morocco.

No idea what’s wrong with the heating. Maybe the mice are to blame again.

If it was me and how stuff like elderly parents etc. play on our minds, I’d be inclined to head back home together. You’re now both retired and have time on your side to have another adventure, understanding that all these trips cost money! heading home also means you can get all the bits and bobs in your van sorted and plan for the next trip. Ultimately it’s down to how you both feel and also what the hospital is saying about your Dad which should drive your decision.

Give yourselves time to get over your coldly, fluey stuff if you can then make a decision. It is not helping your overall spirits. If it dont feel right staying get back into Spain. It's not an endurance test where you have to weather everything thrown at you or you have failed. As said Morocco aint going nowhere and theres nothing as miserable as cold, damp weather without heating.... bon chance...

I can't really advise you, it's your decision , but as others have said I think I would be heading back , you have had a glorious couple of weeks over there and have now got the feel of the place,it would be a shame to spoil your happy memories by having to rush back.
Just get back to Spain then sort it out then.

Very sound advice (in my humble opinion). Love your posts and pictures and i wish you all the best.

Do you not feel like letting any of the Moroccan Magical engineers look at your heating/hot water?
Yes, Rog is looking now but that’s definitely an option. A quick google search didn’t turn much up but asking the campsite would probably be the way to go.

Not getting much sense out of the hospital because it’s the weekend. I’m inclined to just hang on a day or two to recover and see what happens on Mon / Tues. But we need a better site than this one.

Best advice is to book yourself into a cosy, warm hotel whilst you both recover. st way forward.
Best advice up to now! Give van to campsite, who wouldn't charge you the earth as you wouldn't be using it.
Get the work on water and heater done.
Find a pet friendly hotel for a few nights R+R and do the tourist, not traveller bit. (y) ;)

Hi. I’m based in Spain – 25 minutes drive from Algeciras. You could leave your camper safely near us and we could get you to Gibraltar airport (flights to various UK airports) or to Malaga. We have a Hymer and know of places to get repairs done not far from here. Happy to help and would like to think you could resume your trip. We plan to go to Morocco in March, so would love to pick your brains.

Is there a chance you are not pushing the pipe far enough into the fittings? You can measure how far the pipe needs to go in then mark the pipe on the outside then push the pipe in observing the mark on the pipe after fitting it. It is very easy to insert the pipe thinking you have pushed it all the way but sometimes it will go a bit further and never leak again. This has happened to me more than once with underground John Guest Speedfit piping.

So much good advice and even an extraordinarily kind offer ….
You need to get yourselves warm and feel a bit better with a clear head and see how your dad is on Monday.
Hope you can make a decision you’re both happy with. Take care of yourselves.

That’s an a amazingly generous offer, thanks! Even if we don’t need the help, happy to meet up for a beer and a chat on our way back.

We’ve moved 500m to Ocean Blue, a much better campsite. Plan is to wait until we feel better and have news from the hospital. The campsite lady is super friendly, so may ask her about engineers tomorrow if I can persuade Rog. He has one more thing to try - he did find a blown fuse but that’s not the whole problem.
