So I'm guessing something like this, £1.50 on Ebay.

No not legal. It will be "UK" in the required oval design that will be legal. What you show isn'tlegal now without GB stickers, nor will it be legal after september.

What fascinates me is that they are doing this to Show 'committment' to NI yet in the Olympics they are called "Team GB" including NI ??

That is an interesting claim by the 'Express' as the

ISO 3166-2: code for the Unite Kingdom is GB the designate UK is explicitly reserved but only normally used for internet domains........

My understanding is that the requirement for UK comes into force on 28 September 2021. It is really annoying as I have recently changed the plates for a union flag and GB. It is worth noting that regardless of the plates; Spain also require that tacky sticker (currently GB but soon to be UK). It gives them an opportunity for a stop and fine if you don't have it.

Excellent so all of us who bought GB stickers for our number plates having Brexited, now need to change them yet again after less than a year?

In some respects this does make sense since most of Europe refers to us as United Kingdom (or some foreign pronunciation). Great Britain and it's empire ceased to exist decades ago.
We chose ENG in 2017 when purchased the Dethleffs. It causes questions by people we meet wonder if we are Swiss! 😀

It's just as well that trains in Northern Ireland are run by NI Railways as otherwise our shiny new Great British Railways would have to change its name before it's got started. (UK Army anyone?)

Everywhere requires one. I've never understood why they don't stop everyone exiting tunnel&ferries & those without sell them one at an exhorbitant cost?

Thanks, DM not on my reading list. I’m sure (SF) will be rushing out to get their UK stickers in September.

The other countries don’t require the sticker if you have the GB soon to be UK with the Union Flag on the plates. Stickers required everywhere if there is nothing on the plates. Found this on the Gov website.

I’m not sure you understand why we’re known as Great Britain. It’s got nothing to do with greatness in the context you appear to be taking it. It’s to do with size. Unless of course you think the islands have shrunk.
Surely that means that Australia should really be called Very Great Oz then...

Personally i,m from the 5th rock from the sun ..so three fingers up to the rubbish.....
Being in Scotland, I'm resident at the 6th Rock from the Sun, and it's cold and wet, and I'm in search of bottled gas!

Even with the GB inside the EU ring of stars they are no longer legal in europe without a white GB sticker..

Number plates and GB stickers

Before Brexit, UK-registered cars driving in EU and EEA countries were required to have a GB sticker affixed to the back, unless the vehicle was fitted with a Euro-plate (a number plate that displays both the EU flag and a GB symbol in its left-hand column).

GB sticker

Now the UK has left the EU with a deal, these rules have changed. You now do need a GB sticker if your car has a Euro-plate, as well as if the number plate has no national identifier on it or displays a national flag of England, Scotland or Wales.

You don't need a GB sticker, however, if your car's number plate features the GB logo either on its own or accompanied by the Union Jack.

Been called that for years officially and unnofficially

The website still refers to ' ... the British Army protecting the UK's interests', Jim. I checked because I remember those Sunday lunchtime 3 Way Family Favourites postcards read by Bill in London and Sheila in Cyprus ['What's the weather like in Cyprus, this week, Sheila?] from Trooper Smith in BAOR in Germany, asking for a record for the new daughter he hasn't seen since his posting to Germany 18 months earlier ...Oops ...

But only so far as the prosperity of British people is concerned?
"The British Army protects the United Kingdom’s interests at home and abroad, providing a safe and secure environment in which all British citizens can live and prosper."
I think tinkering with GB plates has opened a can of worms which I think wiser counsel would have left alone. So I will leave it alone now.

Many people of Northern Ireland display an NI plate (which isn't a valid identifier) with pride. Will the British government now try and stop them doing this? Talk about trying to fix something that ain't broke.

Apparently it’s to do with Northern Ireland not being recognised as part of Great Britain. Not being racist but the country that doesn’t recognise it begins with F and ends in rance.

The sooner we in Wales Scotland and Northern Ireland get out of this Union of unequals the better for all of us
But we’ll have to have yet another number plate change.

Come on, let’s stay United for the sake of the number plates.:giggle:

No matter, the great still doesn’t mean great in the context of the poster I replied to thinks it does. It still regardless of your pointing out it only means the big island, refers to size. It goes back to differentiatiating between the area of France and our island.
It’s Great Britain as opposed to smaller Brittany in France, dates back to invasion of William the conqueror.
And GB doesn’t include NI, so UK makes far more sense. Surprised the unionists in the province haven’t been pushing for this before.

Glad someone else understands the use of Great in our Great Britain.👍🏻

Having re read the thread title I have to ask, have the government actually banned having GB stickers? As in we must remove them or else. Or as I more strongly suspect they are considering changing the stickers to be more inclusive of our island nation therefore considering using U.K. on the stickers.

Actually UK is the united kindom of Scotland and England. Wales is a principality and NI is a Province 👀😷

I had NI as a territory my bad sorry. 😇

According to the official documentation describing the United Kingdom, [I last looked at it around 2015, so subject to 'IIRC'!], Northern Ireland was described as a Province; according to a resident of Northern Ireland with whom I was 'ahem,'in discussion' at the time, N.Ireland was subsequently described as a country, in a bid to defuse the tensions surrounding the Good Friday Agreement. Fewer arguments arise when the constituents of the UK are merely referred to by their names, and the status, disputed or otherwise, is omitted.
