Government bans GB sticker

It may be that the Government are throwing this up in the air to see how it lands.

Reply to eddievanbitz, I can only offer you #142.

I don’t know the truth of the story, but as they say, no smoke….
Well the Government web site clearly states that you can legally use either "GB" or "UK" so not sure what they would need to discuss.

April 2017 was the last time Parliament discussed number plates and international "suffix's"

Thanks. I’m happy, I have two GB stickers on the back of my ‘van, above bike rack + GB and St George’s Cross on the number plates!

I wonder why they have brought this up today in DT and DM?🤔

A comment on stickers in the DT: “many people might think UK = Ukraine”! 😂4-0.

Sinn Fein made a complaint that "GB" exclude Northern Ireland so they are proposing changing it from september.
That makes perfect sense, Sinn Fein want NI to be free from GB so they complain about NI appearing to be separate from GB.

But if you do have 'UK' at present on the left hand side of your number plate it states that for travelling abroad a GB sticker has to be used

as above when going abroad even with a UK on the plate a "GB" has to be fitted+ that is only stating what you can legally use IN the UK.

Now in the Auto Express magazine:

Interesting footnote at the end of the article - it states:

"Unlike the soon-to-be-invalid GB plates, which were heralded by Transport Secretary Grant Shapps in January, the switch to UK signifiers was not formally announced by the Government. Instead it was spotted as a footnote in UN regulations by the AA..."

Scotland and Wales are not included then if its the case that it would be GB,NI,Sco,W 🤔

We have the ultimate solution!

Why don't we just use the individual country's initials (re-sorted) as this will fully meet Funsters expectations!
(W)ales (I)reland (N)orthern (E)ngland (S)cotland(y)

or if we want to insult all the others we could use!
(S)cotland (W)ales (I)reland (N)orthern (E)ngland(y)

Or Sinew, but not strained!

GB sticker been on the rear of the van for years. I now have GB stickers with the union jack overlaying the previous EU stars on the number plates. Might as well add a UK sticker to the rear as well and keep the bureaucrats happy, I may even add a French angles mort sticker or two as well just for the hell of it and to keep my German and French emissions stickers company.

So, excuse my ignorance as I've jumped from the 3rd page to page 6 of this thread. Am I getting this right? If you travel in Europe you need to display a GB sticker? But, this govt are saying if you go abroad without displaying a UK sticker, you'll be fined by the UK govt?

That's right, all of that or....a union Jack tattooed on your right calf should see you out OK.

I might get "Made in England" tattooed on my forehead, will that do?

In all seriousness though, what jurisdiction have the UK govt got over you when you're out of the country?
It's not a legal requirement for UK registered vehicles to display GB or UK domestically so I can't see how they can enforce it?

So I'm guessing something like this, £1.50 on Ebay.

The UK Government doesn't have jurisdiction whilst you are abroad.

It is the continental authorities of the country you are visiting that have the jurisdiction, just as they do now.

The difference is that instead of displaying GB on your vehicle, from 28 September this year you will be required to display UK. :giggle:

Personally i,m from the 5th rock from the sun ..so three fingers up to the rubbish.....
