Government bans GB sticker

According to the official documentation describing the United Kingdom, [I last looked at it around 2015, so subject to 'IIRC'!], Northern Ireland was described as a Province; according to a resident of Northern Ireland with whom I was 'ahem,'in discussion' at the time, N.Ireland was subsequently described as a country, in a bid to defuse the tensions surrounding the Good Friday Agreement. Fewer arguments arise when the constituents of the UK are merely referred to by their names, and the status, disputed or otherwise, is omitted.

You are correct my bad. Thanks for putting it right. I must have had a 🧠 💨

Sounds like bollox to me.
Close, but I think it's probably Borrox, I think the National Anthem is next on the list for change, becoming "Rule Britannia " , and has to be sung every morning in schools, ;).

Not at all! I can still recall the heated discussion with the gent from N.Ireland and we were both looking up texts and Treaties etc. Funnily enough, considering the GFA was 'involved'/being discussed, the debate started on a Friday night and he was still firing off texts and messages well into Saturday. I don't recall whether we settled for a score draw or we each lost the will to live by about Saturday lunchtime!

Having re read the thread title I have to ask, have the government actually banned having GB stickers? As in we must remove them or else. Or as I more strongly suspect they are considering changing the stickers to be more inclusive of our island nation therefore considering using U.K. on the stickers.
The UK Government has already notified the UN that as from 28 September, the country identifier will change from GB to UK.

So are we going to jail for keeping a GB sticker on our vehicles or not? Are we banned from having GB stickers? I don’t think it’s our government alone that makes the decision to change the country’s identifying sticker.

Not sure if this story has been posted, but according to the Daily Express, the Government is changing the country identifier rules again and in future all British registered vehicles going abroad will need to display a 'UK' on the number plate (or separate sticker?) instead of GB.

"By the end of the year, all Britons must show these letters somewhere on their vehicle before leaving the country."

"The new rules on vehicle signs will come into place on September 28, marking the end of the summer holiday season."

"If Britons fail to display the letters UK somewhere on their vehicle when abroad after the end of September, they will be fined."

Sadly this is true. Read it today. The minister who decided this should be fined for wasting people's money. Disgraceful..

Boy am I glad I didn’t spend a whole six bob on a GB sticker.
I had to buy some new plates the other week, they were plain with no stickers, flags, country identification etc, and they were a lot more than 6 bob  so I can imagine how cheesed off some people may be feeling who might have bought a new set of plates "to comply" only to find they've got to replace them now. It's not just about stickers here as some people have changed plates.

Can you post a link to the place that sells stickers for 6 bob though cause I'll but 2 at that price?

This was instgated by the 'sein fein' in their constant sniping against anything 'British'...They complained about the word 'Great' and of course the french/german alliance backed them. You can Still display a GB Sticker,..as long as you are displaying 'somewhere' on the vehicle, a 'UK' Sticker...now, where did i put my ladder,...i must venture up onto the roof....
I still have a 1960's RAC 'GB' cast alluminium plate which i will continue to proudly display !

You can still display the 'GB' sticker/plate....as long as you also have a 'UK' sticker displayed (somewhere) .
And I still find displaying the UK sticker infinitely more pleasureable than that horrid 'EU' thing !

Thanks, that’s exactly my point. We don’t have to stop displaying the GB mark anywhere. We probably will have to attach a U.K. sticker somewhere which will be available for about 30p from ebay.
Hardly a cause to get ones knickers in a twist.

The articles seem to siggest it's our current government that are suggesting the change are you saying they are Sein Fein in disguise. Wow I never saw through that one!! Neither did I see any evidence of EU support for Sein Fein quite a lot in America though and yet we seem keen on stronger economic ties there.

Sorry they are a very small amount more expensive. In fact very nearly ten bob. If that’s going to stop you touring abroad call round at mine next time you’re around Yorkshire I’ll buy you some.

Don’t see why, there will be exactly the same demand for U.K. stickers as there is currently for GB stickers. Why you think suddenly more vehicles will want to go abroad I don’t know.

So now have I got to get a UK sticker to stick over my GB sticker which I bought to stick over my euro sticker thats on my number plate ?

Nope and you never had to cover the other stickers up either. You will just need to buy a U.K. sticker and stick it on the van. There isn’t and never was any requirement to remove previous stickers.
There now, that’s not so traumatic is it?

May just have been another Carrie 'suggestion' to husband BoBo?

What about the demand for all those who currently have GB and need to replace \ supplement with UK? So, with the same vehicles going abroad there will be an initial increased demand for stickers.

You will just need to buy a U.K. sticker and stick it on the van.
And you've answered your own question.

Going to need bigger number plates……..

England flag, Wales flag, Union flag, GB and UK stickers. Wife likes her Welsh Dragon sticker and I’ve got an English Rose (rugby ;) ).

Come to think of it, I’ll need a bigger back ended van.

I had to buy one each time any way. Or buy a few at once as I don’t like having any stickers on my vehicles so remove the, as soon as I’m home. Therefore I’ll be buying no more and no less than now.
It’s pence what really is the problem?

Cheapest UK sticker I can find is £1.35 - that's nearly 3 x the price of a GB sticker - unbelieveable! :ROFLMAO:

This may be a problem for me. Being Manx we never used GB stickers but GBM. UKM would make no sense as Isle of Man is not part of the UK (a political union) but is part of GB (a geographical area)

I can't quantify it but I would guess you will be in the minority so there will be an initial increased demand for UK stickers.
On cost, my initial tongue in cheek post was "wait 'til to you see what the cost of a UK one will be" and I still guess they'll be more expensive than current GB versions given the initial supply and demand. Did I say it was a problem?

If you have those Union Jack stickers I’m afraid you will have to remove them. The Saltire bits of the flag are the wrong shade of blue.

iPad?
That’s an odd problem but can happen if you are accidentally in bb code mode.
I assume you’re trying to choose from the site smilies. Not the manually typing : and )
Can you quote and do other test editor functions like make text bold and italic?

You’re in bb code mode if the [ ] are bold and the other menu items duller.

Another dreary sideshow in the ongoing culture wars. It was bad enough when Government Ministers suddenly sprouted Union flags from their ears, when giving interviews at home. More of this rubbish to come I fear.
And the red boxes open behind ! Doesn’t beat the Education minister with a whip on his desk . Bit of a gaff there if you didn’t know he was previously the government whip . Very sad people .
