Germany/Austria August/September information sharing.

Whats the best way into Italy via France? Saw a tunnel was €58 each way so maybe go via CH?
Depends where you are thinking of ending up. If getting the vignette ......

If i were going to Como I would go via Basle but use the Luxembourg route via Belgium in order to avoid toll roads.
I would also give consideration to the Grand St Bernard pass from Aosta leading to Martigny (The original Italian Job filmed on this pass).
One thing i wouldnt be tempted on doing is backtracking from Martigny back into Chamonix. Really awful road but great scenery.

If you’re talking about the Mt Blanc tunnel, from experience I can tell you that a single is only a few euro less than a return.

I don’t know about you guys, but this uncertainty re where to go, how to get there, and then where to stay is getting me more than a little unsettled!

Bit I’m sitting here in Scotland in the pouring rain and thinking “I really must hit the road to better weather!”

Went the Gotthard Pass in 2018 better than the tunnel, we will be heading back this way again on our way back from Crete to Germany in September 🇬🇷🇬🇷🇬🇷

Edit
Haha just thought not actually been thru the tunnel but this was a cracking route :-)

My preferred route too Chef when visiting Italy and beyond. With a fixed Vignette fee for motorhomes no greater than 3.1/2 tons that last for 12 months and no charge for the Gothard tunnel, it is much cheaper I.M.O. than going via Austria, especially if doing the route on the way back.

Just pull over at customs takes 2 minutes in 2018 it was 32.50 which allows you 10 journeys valid for 1 year.

Has anyone tried the non-toll route through the Brenner pass (the 182 I think) and found it suitable for MoHo?

Whilst we all I’m sure appreciate the excellent imput that suavecarve has made to this thread, it’s worth keeping in mind that this pandemic seems to affect towns and cities more than rural areas.
We shall be on a Stellplatz in Reil next week, if the weather is against us we may move to an Aire in France or possibly even a campsite in Italy.

I was in Reil about 6-7 weeks ago for 4 nights.
Easily the busiest aire we went on.

Safe as houses. You have to have 4 metres between vans. Cycling heaven. Zell was OK to walk around. Wouldnt touch Cochem with a barge pole though, we got there on the motorbike and turned round. Absolutely heaving.

We even went to a bar in Reil, the one on the right hand side if the river is on your left upstream, plenty of space to sit down each night (we only went the once)

looking at the weather forecast for the next week or 2 Italy is looking more welcoming☀☀☀☀☀

Pretty much mirrors what we did last year, we hired bikes and cycled to Zell, had drinks in the same bar and had a fabulous meal just a bit further on. Hoping for for an encore.

Great shout.

Keep to the rivers for warmer weather in Germany.

www.ventusky.com is what we use. 10 day forecast which has an adaptable offer of rain, cloud, temperature etc

Have been following this thread with great interest, so thanks everyone for the input. But come Thursday 27th we will be on the tunnel, Germany hopefully and eventually onto Italy (Jeselo), but still tempted to go via France for a couple of weeks. Just can't decide. Seems Germany could be busy and France not so busy. We are fine if have to Q on return.

Have a great holiday.
If Q14 didnt concern me then France would be on the agenda.
I just love the place and their attitude.

We’re making our way down Germany and really enjoying the weather, people, scenery.,,

stayed a extremely well set up Stell Hornbach best Sasrbrucken. Lots of way marked walks, in beautiful countryside. Small town village with supermarket and bakery and several restaurants.

We ar
Is any Funsters out there now?

I’m wondering how busy it is now in Germany with France “off limits”and I expect more people heading there than expected 🤔

We are sitting in Saaarberg at the moment on a large SP ( about 100 vans) )Two Brit vans here including us the rest are mostly German.

Just before todays figures are released Switzerland has had the press warnings.
I use these press warnings as a "practice run" for Germany and would now be returning is i were in CH and making a booking for Thursday evening/Friday morning.
This practice run worked (in my head) for Croatia and France.

CH is not in the daily figures but i can work out their 7 day rate which is currently 41.1

I will also be adding Belgium to the daily figures as have noticed a downward trend with them which if they continue on their path will see a strong downward path in about 7 days (as will the Netherlands) according to their 7 day rolling per 100,000 figures.

We have also now made our minds up and only outrageous figures in the next 25 hours for Germany will stop us going first thing Friday morning (or a train strike by M Macron)

On our way back from Greece/Italy can I take it if Switzerland goes on the quarantine list as long as we don't stop between Italy and Germany it would be the same as Germany to the UK via tunnel no need to Quarantine. Well that's the way I see it ???

That is the system at the moment, HOWEVER, I would be keeping an eye on the Swiss news as if their rate is going up they may take up some measures to negate increases which may include travel. Austria would be similar and they did do this earlier in the pandemic causing 12 hour tail backs.
Link on the information on this thread somewhere

I did chuckle when I read your post! Germany is a massive country and you hoping a Funster can tell you how busy it is ? I look forward to the informed replies.

Chef ! That's a massive drive and I think common sense prevails. I'm of the view you can stop on the way provided you Isolate which is feasible in a motorhome. The Italian/Swiz/German border is open at the moment so should be a doddle for a man with your capability and experience of forced lockdowns. Keep me posted Chum

Ha the route I'm looking at is the original route just over from Lake Como/Italy to just into Germany by Singer under 200miles ok might be a couple of hillocks on route but easily doable 👍

While i am here, i have jsut updated the map with the 40 most beautiful towns/villages in Germany according to some random website.
They are in a different layer entitled "40 beautiful villages" so you need to have that ticked on the left hand side to see them and probably untick the routes that you dont need to see all the time. They are in red with a picture of a house as the icon

I added 5 Italian aires on as well last night

Rurberg stellplatz.

Easy to get too, small and tight (not terrible though), expensive (was 8€ now 15€). Flat ish (would have normally used ramps, but didn’t due to early depart). Extra cost for services. Loads of ehu points at 1€ per kw, very nice setting, plenty to do around area. Many cafe‘s, few restaurants, snack bar, swimming cycling, sunbathing etc.
BUT
Busy, very busy especially at weekends I would think. We got there at 11.30am and there were three spots. Some people left, and other turned up, and that was pretty much all day. Some Germans staying until 9pm before heading off, and this was on a Tuesday, rainy, not particularly hot day.
There are fuel stations 10mins, and 15mins away. Enroute to motorway we passed 4 or so bakers and probably 4 fuel stations.

We headed out of site at 6.45 am and went via satnav on to motorway route. We stopped at German baker and bought supplies for the day. I was amazed how busy the road system was, probably the busiest we had experienced but all flowed well. German rush hour is obviously earlier than the uk one with loads of school kids about. We then joined motorway and went via the south of the satnav routes and went via Lille. Its 15 mins longer, according to nav, but no big cities (Brussels, Antwerp, Gent) to navigate. It was a really really easy drive. We stopped in German motorway aire for breakfast, Belgium aire for pee stop, obviously not needing to leave Moho, and another pee stop France again staying inside. Took us 4hours 20 mins, and no problems.

Another IMPORTANT issue with the stellplatz is that it would not except any of the cards my wife, or I had. So we had to find some change. 15€ in change. Great.

I was popping back through this thread looking for something and revisited this post with a set of eyes that are actually open.

We have stayed previously only i didnt realise. We thought we were in Belgium and maybe thats what threw me off and that i didnt leave a review.
It was unfortunate because it was a right old misty day and it is cycle heaven (we didnt cycle but will be this time)
The place was like a ghost town but it was latish september and really dour weather. Boats left to go on tours and plenty of overfill space if just overnighting if it were full.

Still not cancelled our ferry to Rotterdam on the 4th I wonder if they’ll take the Netherlands off the list before then .
