Germany/Austria August/September information sharing.

Expect a beep of the horn in about 10 mins.

Currently quaffing the 1 euro bratwurst at globebus
Have the Frikadelle for me please. ;)

I am assuming you will be up there tonight at the Parking Platz. Are you coming down here on the SP tomorrow? We are down by the waterfront roadside, 3 x vans along on the right from the T junction.
Some have been overnighting on that concrete pad to the left, just past the newly built part of the SP.

Cheers,

Jock. :)

Bit of drama last night in the village at 1 am, I heard a bit of noise outside and having my new bike out there I jumped up and looked. Up on the hill on the edge of the village was a fire with the fire brigade in attendance, turns out it was a specialist factory producing oil from the grape seeds. Went on all night and is pretty burnt out.

Second day in berl8n and now understanding how both S & U Bahn system works. Went to Zoo this morning then onto the Hofbrauhaus and now sitting at a table on Kerfutsendam watching all the Berliners on their evening stroll. There are some well dressed people about tonight.

No. We had another suavecarve moment of change.
We went to globus to see if they had any ebikes as they did in June but no joy.
We now feel tandem doesnt suit our needs.
So we trundled on and have ended up in eiffel at Schleiden.
By far the worst aire/sp we have stayed at. The town looked promising upon arrival but let us down supremely.
We thought we would go across the country roads and hit 3 umleitungs which did nothing for my mood on a hot day.
So we ll get the motorbike out tomorrow and hit the lake just north of us then move hopefully no distance then monday have a look at aachen decathlon and see what we think suits us and maybe go home in the afternoon or try the bikes out which would make sense.

E really thoroughly dejecting day.

Which makes all the other days better. I shouldnt moan i am sat with my 2nd cold guinness. I have completed a telegraph and mail crossword and dinner looks good.

Just managed a get on here for 2 nights lake titisee at sandbanks
Sandbanks, that’s the campsite I couldn’t remember at Tittisee, we spent 7 nights April 2019, great facilities, lots of walking cycling, and as stated the spa is huge there, (no fabric or fabric whatever is your preference, we tried both🤭) not sure what the covid rules would be regarding the different pools or spas though

Roger20 - what was the name of that site you mentioned - might head there myself next week?
Forgot to mention that electric limited to 4Kw/day on this site and extra metered so cheaper to use gas for hot water. Also they charge €1.95 tourist tax whereas here in Horb am Neckar no tax.

If there were diversions marked you must be one of the chosen
Normal for Germany is close the road then your on your own to find an alternative
Mid August drove up from Alsace to cross the river at Mainz but they had closed the road to repair a bridge over the weekend. No warning, no diversion just the slip road open leading into Mainz centre which I should have had an Umwelt sticker for. No fun maneouvring 8.5m around some very tight backstreets to get back to the autobahn to cross at Bingen on the ferry

We got to Landsberg am Lech this evening . After being slightly underwhelmed by the SP we loved the town .. we expect to be between here and Fussen for the next few days before deciding where to go next

I’d just thought I’d put out a Big Thanks to suavecarve for leading the info flow / planning for the late summer escape to Germany.

We normally hit France but have been mightily impressed by the experiences on offer in Germany.

Without suavecarve getting the ball rolling I might well have just stayed at home in Scotland (which while having some awesome places, doesn’t quite have the weather to go with it right now).

So a round of applause 👏🏻 and my thanks to suavecarve for leading the way.

PhilandMena if you want a really good burger then try here https://burger-meister.de/?lang=en. No inside seating as it’s based in an old toilet under the railway bridge, you’re allowed to buy a beer across the rd at off sales, we’ll worth a visit.

At Enkirch stellplatz just south of Reil on Mosel. This is a 200+ field beside a nice town, but see photo. Chocker all weekend. Weather gorgeous. Music nightly at local wine party over the weekend.

Just got last but one pitch in Meersburg after arriving here at just before nine.. drove past the HUGE spa leaving Titisee-Neustadt but didn’t know where it was when we were in Titisee-Neustadt ( duh!) People next to us arrived 5 mins after us and are on their 3 rd beer each - !- place is v busy many vans arrived in last hour and loads of vans parked on roadsides as we drove in. Very misty this am but sunning up now. PS several loud Irish blokes in English vans in Titisee sleeping in vans and urinating at side of road , driving in n out at random times . One emptied a container of water that filled the panel van ( looked clean water) all over the parking place. All very odd ....

Great thread. Our first visit to Germany, must say it has been a bit of a shock to the system for us. We've been touring France/Swizerland for the last few months which has been rural, quiet, aires & sites plentiful. As others have noted, Germany has seemed to be heaving since crossing the border in Basel last week. Seems very industrial and built up compared to across the border in this south west corner. At an aire on the edge Obertsrot next to an outdoor pool, fairly quiet, not too busy atm, no services except electricity (and water by container), think we'll stay here for the next few days with the weather forecast....

One question, we've found only EuroCard is accepted at a proportion of places? Is this common or have we just been unlucky?

All i can say is i have never heard of eurocard. Cash seems the method for sp and finding credit card payment has been scarce

We needed to find a toilet dump and came to heimberg.
Beautiful drive in. Town looks great. Shed loads of proper cyclists and motorbikers. We are staying. Out on bike today and found BOC bike shop in aachen to spend dosh tomorrow

It is not uncommon, and especially common amongst the Dutch. Cash is still favoured in Germany, however, we have had no problem with fuel using Nationwide Visa CC, and Metro Debit (MasterCard) for cash withdrawals. 👍

Cheers,

Jock. 🙂

Neither had we! But we've come across three shops (two bakeries) that were EC only.

Fuels been fine as have the supermarkets. We don't tend to carry much cash and rely on cards mainly, only a small float for terminals in the aires etc but looks like that will change in Germany! Thanks.

Didnt realise a eurocard was a cc !! Doh.

We have used our santander one really quite well !!

One bike repair shop didnt take it.

Also its heimbach not heimberg

In the German rural areas restaurants, campsites and bars all have the potential to embarrass you if you have no cash in your wallet. We carry a few hundred Euros so we don’t have to go in search of a cash point whilst someone holds on to my passport, as happened once. 🤪

I just googled heimberg and its up in the Swis Alps, thought that was a bit far to go to empty your cassette

Sounds like you were watching us hold up the queue in the first bakery, not understanding why our card wasn't working and then emptying the Mrs bag on the counter in search of some Euro
