Germany/Austria August/September information sharing.

Anyone stayed (and can recommend) the Stelpatz at Aachen?

I’m looking for an overnighted before my sprint back to the Chunnel next week.

And excuse my ignorance, but can you book Stelplatz or is it luck of the draw (I have just used Campsites so far on my trips to Europe)?
When you back? We ll be off tuesday or wednesday.
I wont bother overnighting beforehand in aachen but will have a leg stretch there or we might go reil sunday monday night and just go from there. I am only 2 hours from tunnel other side though

Change of plans again today, we ended up paying for another night at the SP here in Fussen, moved the van off the pitch and parked the bike and tables in the middle of it, Us and Drexxer then piled in our van and drove over to the Zugspitze near Garmish. Once we finally managed to park the van (more on that later) we had a fantastic time, went up the Cable car to the summit, mooched around had a coffee and waffle, then down via cable car to the Glacier (more like a football field of dirty snow that gets no sun), then back down on the Cogwheel Train. Fantastic views and well worth going if you can get a full day in and enjoy walking (59.50 Groats per person and 5 Groats for the pooch), photos to follow.

After our experience I would advise getting the Cogwheel from Garmish or better still Grainau (free parking available, near station, on gravel area at 47.4715728, 11.0201089), not the top car park. They have set a limit of 30 MoHo's in the top car park, so during the week, even if the overflow carpark is empty, other than 30 MoHo's, you will be refused entry, unless of course you have a German plate MoHo! We were refused entry the first time so dropped off the Ladies and Pooches and went to find a parking spot further down, while they were waiting the Ladies witnessed several MoHo's being given access to parking and none comming out, they then went over to look at the car park, which was virtually empty, so they challenged the parking attendant, who said we could park there. We drove back up the hill and as we entered the Car Park the attendant came out waving his hands and saying "No, Full, Turn Around", as you can imagine me and Andy provided a reasonable response in Fluent english, as soon as the attendant saw Anna walking towards us he said it was fine, we could park there and showed us to a place, and then, not two minutes later was back showing another German plate van where to park!!! (Rant over)

Anyway, we'll be leaving the Fussen SP Tomorrow, if anyone wants our pitch PM me and we can syncronise our departurre with your arrival...

Oh, I forgot to say, the youngsters were very tired after their exciting day out, and the Cogwheel train lulled them to sleep.

We cycled past Enkirch Stellplatz today, it was very busy, but it’s one of those sites which never seems to be full as there is seemingly endless space on the grass away from the river. The Stelplatz in Reil however has had the full sign up from Wednesday, with vans arriving all through the day having to turn around and try elsewhere.
The reports of little availability everywhere in Germany kinda makes you think twice about moving on, normally approximately ten vans move on, but today there was very little movement.
Does France beckon I wonder ?

If anyone is at reil i could do with your spot sunday. Time immaterial to us.

We did that yesterday expensive but one of our best days out ever. Anyone coming to Garmisch if you arrive early you will stand a chance if a spot when someone leaves, we came on Thursday and full sign was up but went to office and she said plot 35 was leaving soon so you can have that pitch so worth a try.

Fly and Wasp spray, where (what type of shop) do you buy it in Germay, we've had problems finding it in France last year and Germany this year...

Don’t let the pic of people in the lake fool you - water was FREEZING today when I went for first and doubtless last lake swim ... We also cycled to the Lidl from here via a godforsaken goat track that was uphill ALL THE WAY ( several thousand k I think) but the main road back was also terrifying ( don’t like heights or exercise ) Beer gin and veggie chilli then reading all day tomorrow 😄

We head a wee mooch around Monschau earlier and now we're at Wurzburg for the night.
Town is very busy .. parking is also busy.. and the house party in the cast park is a bit of a nuisance .. but otherwise all good . Well be heading south from tomorrow. If it turns out to be too crammed we might just pop down to Garda

Hitting the tunnel Thurs or Fri, and then a short jaunt back to Scotland 😞

We've been on an ACSI site at Bad Liebenzell ( North Black Forest - Nagold Valley) for a few nights and there has been plenty of space. Good spa town with a castle and easy cycling on the rivers but you need an ebike to get out of the valleys.

Moving a bit further south tomorrow but will probably just try and avoid the really busy popular spots this year. Noticed the SP at Bad Durrheim has 400 pitches - there must be some churn there. A couple of years ago we visited the Allgau (above Bodensee) and there were a number of decent SP eg Bad Walsee - wonder if it might be quieter there now?

FWIW we don't mind spending a few more euros on a campsite this year. At Bad Liebenzell there was no-one on the SP outside the campsite. Price was 12 euros plus metered electric against 20 euros for a proper pitch inside.

Left Garda 5 days ago, busy at weekends but plenty of spaces on sites. Now at Lake Iseo, gorgeous , much better than Garda. Lakeside pitch town lovely and quiet.

We've had no internet for about a week now, struggling to send the odd text message even, whilst others around us are all on 4G. Crazylegs John was stood right next to me with a 4G signal, but I didn't even have 2G. Vodafone deny there is a problem with the SIM card, but instead tried to make out it was the phone at fault, so after requesting a call back on the matter, I terminated the 2.5 hour chat session, (yes, you read that correctly), courtesy of garjanco's 4G data signal. Within an hour, I was back on a 4G signal. Anyone else on Vodafone had problems in Germany? 😕

We left a busy Reil on Tuesday, stayed up at Globus Zell. On Wednesday, we arrived at Ediger Eller at 09.30, managing to grab a couple of pitches on the SP, opposite the Tourist Information Office. We left yesterday at 08.00, and arrived at the big SP here at Zell (by the road bridge) and on a couple of pitches by 09.00, just as the bread van turned up. 😉 We are here until Monday morning at least. It is packed, as is the other SP near the Campsite. 😲

Sounds horrible for getting a parking spot in Germany..........it’s beginning to put us off coming 😞
Don't be put off, you just need to be savvy about your arrival times, and plan for the weekends. I am sure things will ease off a bit after this weekend. We see folks arriving at all hours between 15.00 and 22.00hrs, looking for a pitch. I'm not sure what planet they are on myself. 😲

Cheers for now,

Jock. 🙂

Roger20 - what was the name of that site you mentioned - might head there myself next week?

Just out of curiosity what price have folk been paying for the tunnel lately? Cheapest I seem to be getting is £135 and thats before I add the dogs on
I'm sure it was £102 last year then £18 per dog ...

Just picked this up from the Hymer group, obviously not verified but this Facebook group generally contains good info and whist I don’t know the poster, I’m sure he has been around a long time.

Just over the border in Germany now. Pulled on to this one next to the Rhine. Lots of room to get the awning out €13 ehu included :)
Time to explore

Nice stop that one Dave. Has it still got the border painted on the bridge?

When we were there they had a free transport deal which included the train to Basle, Black forest something??
