Germany/Austria August/September information sharing.

This is a "memory" post so will need checking.
If you have come from a safe country into germany (that particular federal state) then you only had to test if you were in Luxembourg for 3 nights. Otherwise you didnt have to but had to q14 (no testing at that time)
Info was correct about 3 weeks ago but certainly needs checking
We live in Spain so tomorrow we will be travelling north through France then through Luxembourg to Trier. Spain is regarded as a high risk area. Our van has Spanish plates

I can see that people will stop in France and Belgium because they can or because they're going to spend a fortnight in Germany before returning.. but the impression I get is that some aren't going to stay isolated in their vans..(as they 'will' on the way back) .. and therefore are happy to put themselves at risk in countries with comparatively high rates . Or use Germany as their "let's see if I caught it country" which seems a little unfair to the Germans and other motorhomers who haven't exposed themselves to excess danger Maybe I'm just getting the wrong end of the stick here. We don't intend to stop in either Belgium of France. Looks like we won't even be going to Italy now either
I will probably stop in Belgium to break my journey but I will be maintaining a 2m distance as I don’t want to catch covid therefore I would not be putting myself or anyone else at risk. I would probably be less of a risk to Germany than the French tourists they are letting in?

I m working off the top of my head here, and i have had some form of croatian fire starter thinly described as a shot, but, Spain is high risk to germany so you have to do the test then Q5 til another test I think.

Seriously worth double checking and not taking that as Gospel.

Well self isolating in Belgium is pretty easy......

A view from my MoHo in a usually busy site. 4 vans on entire site (and only seen 3 humans in total).

Check-in had sanitiser outside, plastic booth for the one member of staff.

Simply put it is WAY more isolated where I am than any of the sites I’ve been on in the UK on the way here.

Is there a reason people are stopping in France and Belgium (on this'germany' thread)? If you're not getting out of the van to enjoy some of these lovely Aires what's the point. .. maybe I'm misunderstanding but as I see it both countries are high risk ... Germany isn't too far away.
I understand some people are ok with q14 and are staying in France and others are going to be away for a substantial period of time after France.. I'm not really looking to argue. .. just curious?
It might be too far to go after long drive to tunnel not to stop over before you get to Germany? Can get to Germany without breaking the rules and comeback then with no Q 14 .

Have you added the location to the Google map ?

If your any where nea

If your anywhere near Bad Bergzabern on the way down I recommend weingut Hitziget
( searchforsites) super site good wine .€8 euros a night all the services and good 🍷
We have seen the weather forecast. Had some pils and some god awful croatian shots. Looked at our options. Noted the amount of recommendations for this gaffe. Considered the life expectancy of our livers and iur budget.

And we are going there tomorrow. FiL is 30 mile down the road atm and might join us but he hasnt spent a penny in the last 5 years on aires so it wll be a shock to him.

Have some eberbach photos to cheer everyone up

Updated maps with brewery stopovers. About 20 of them with stells either on site or nearby. Can be seen on map as same colour as stells but with a beer mug

Depending when we land in France will decide how far we get towards Germany, booked on the 14.36 on the 5th but will turn up early. Maybe just go to Bergues like has been recommended.

We have moved on today down to the Neckar valley. We have decided to give Heidelberg a miss as unsure how busy it might be, and it will be there next year !

We stopped at Hirschorn for the aire right alongside the river, but it is 12.50 which in good weather is probably good value, but it is also 4 decent bottles of wine, and for us, it didnt quite cut the moutarde. so we have moved on to the FLT site at Eberbach eating lunch having a coffee and watching the rain fall contemplating bike, motorbike or foot.

Our current plan is to be at Lake Konstance for Wednesday night as the weather improves on Thursday.

I m going to add a few Belgian/French stopovers to the map as i got the laptop out. Bergues Pont de Plaisnace Givet. Sorts of places that are overnight stops for late arrivals
Can you suggest any decent places to stay around Lake Konstance? We are thinking of heading in that direction at the end of the week. Still to make a decision on Cornwall or Germany from Wednesday for us and the dogs.

And talking about travelling through Belgium to Germany.

I’ve recently up-plated from 3.5t to 4t (paper exercise - but not told the DVLA yet).

So do I need to get a Toll Tag for the Belgian network (travelling from Calais via Brussels to Germany)?

I will probably be around 3.5t or slightly over.

The Belgians have the good sense to restrict their toll charges to commercials not Motorhomes.

I cant recommend anything down there unfortunately as i have never been. What i have done is gone through S4S and picked out all the aires with decent reviews from others with a cunning plan of starting at one end and going along.

If you have access to the map you can see them and they have links on them.

Send a PM to Lozsing for access to the map at the moment and that is my research for the area.

As a side note I have just added another 8 brewery stops (including the one near Constance 8kms away from lake)

There is a possibility that some might have the stell staggering distance away so you can cross reference them from these 2 links kindly provided by orridge about 3 weeks ago

Now to find the weingut list !!!

Came into the Mosel yesterday from Belgium (A4/A1) without any problems. However there was the option for travellers to be voluntarily tested as we entered Germany, which I assume is what this sign means.
Overnight in Trier last night at the choker Treviris Stellplatz and saw another 3 GB plates. Currently at Weingut Feiten, in Longuich on the Mosel (20k upriver from Trier). Only Brit although 1 other came when it was full. No rain as yet.

That was us came and went as we wanted 2 nights but she only had 1. Went across the river to Mehring.

MichaelT /.you said. . Nearly all cars and MH stopped by security for explosive testing and one behind us they looked in garage.

The only reason they didn’t search you is because the woman told you it was ok to go ! , the guy in the office Came out & gave her a telling off as she should’t have let you go , the reason I know this is because i think I was the one behind you , I got out to show them in my passenger garage door , disappointed you didn’t even give me a wave 😁

did it look like this ?

Arrived at the Waterloo battle site yesterday afternoon after a good drive from Dunkerque via Lille, surprisingly Belgium roads in good condition. Got rained off yesterday so exploring some more this morning and heading off to Luxemburg later today. Pictures to follow in a later post.

Go box required for Austrian motorways and some A roads. Possible (with planning) to traverse Austria for you without Go Box)

I would bite the bullet and NOT buy the Go Box but would be prepared to pay to go over the Glossglockner which will be about 35 euros for you. From memory fairly easy to get there from the north and exit from the south. You wont hear anybody saying that is bad value !!!! Make sure camera is fully charged and it is a clear day. And get the sticker to go on your van. You will have to walk the last 300 metres as youre too big to get up there. I took the motorbike the last 300 metres in white socks and sandals and got some extremely weird looks from all the 1300 cc BMW tourers. Allow 4-5 hours for the 33km route

Direct from France to Italy, Montgenevre is fairly easy and there is an aire/sosta just over the border but they are all toll free, its just the tunnels you pay for. (really good summer luge here)

Let us know where you are intending to be in France and where you intend to be in Italy.

Hi Rudski,
We hope to do that to avoid q14- if you see this post can you let us know how long the journey was please ? As originally booked on the 20.00 tunnel but trying to get over before that so we are not driving all day and night from door to door. Also any hints about how easy it is to get into the Stel in the dark , when doubtless stressed and without the correct coins !! xx Thank you
Apologies for just picking this up, the WiFi is v hit and miss here,
Bit late and you will no doubt have completed your journey
We had a good run with no snarl ups around Brussels, we were going to head to Aarchen but realised it was in the crit air zone and we didn’t have one so pushed on to the stellplaz in Roetgen, this is a car park and it was so full of cars we couldn’t get in, and v noisy so headed up the hill to the campsite, v quiet and I needed to chill after 20hrs on the road, peeing down today so moving on to Monschau, then south as the weather seems to be a bit like home😢 hope you had a safe journey
Cheers
Mark

I ve added some weinguts to the map.

Fairly rudimentary method of finding them and certainly not all encompassing but they all have stells attached to them. All of them have links to the their websites.

I would love to have visited them all for a personal review but i havent (yet)

It's a chance you take Kenny, but if you don't have a Go Box for your 5 tonner, and you are diverted off a secondary route (due to a RTC, or a road blocked for some reason), and you don't have a Go Box, you'll be heavily stung/fined at the next pull in point. Explaining how you were diverted on to that road for whatever reason, will have no sway whatsoever with the Enforcement Officer. As far as he/she is concerned, you shouldn't be on there without a Go Box.
We were 5 tonnes, but are now 6.85 tonnes, and avoid Austria like the plague. :( Only been the once, when I was a bit naive re the rules.

What route does your Sat Nav provide, by choosing a "Non Toll" route, and if diverted, are there alternatives without having to enter the Autobahn?

Cheers,

Jock. :)

Based on a Bmw 1200 motorbike 😜 holiday, I would suggest the village of Immenstaad is worth a visit. It sits on the east side of the lake, very pretty, lots of bars and restaurants and a ferry terminal to explore other places around the lake. This review is based on one beer induced evening and a 30 minute walk in the morning before we departed.
What I did learn whilst there was that Zeppelin airships were built there, the allies would have liked to destroy the factory but with the Swiss border so close not a single Bomb fell in this area.
An airship Still flies over the lake today.

Hi Scotch Mist, We got caught on the Austrian motorway two years ago. We are 3.8tons, we hadnt expected to enter Austria and thought we just had to buy a vignette as told to us at the first petrol station on the motorway. We were stopped at the too booth 5 miles in, pulled over and fined 200e on top of which they wanted 80e for the box and euros to top it up.
We had to pay fine but were allowed to come off motorway. Found the A and B roads excellent and very scenic.

Not sure if the tunnel is the same regarding being busy as it was when we came over (7th Aug), but we were 4 minutes early and they wouldn’t let us check in. Actually told us to exit the site and come back later! As it was I argued with her for the 4 minutes and then she had to let me in! She said not one minute early allowed according to her instructions. Had I been even earlier I’d have been going in circles lol.

Been in France last 3 weeks. No issues.
Watched Tour de France stage yesterday. Gendarmes very vigilent on facemask wearing. Threw a couple of spectators out of the smallish group at Eze, where we watched.
Off to Italy tomorrow.

Failed to make it to the weingut today. The FiL was in the way at Eppingen. Flowery cobbled streets with half timbered houses and full frontal statues with a few water features. Nice town currently doing a park up with what looks like a walkable river feature. Stell for 4 but we are number 5. Will be well worthy stop next year. Kaufland 100m

Been reading a few posts about going to Reil. Is there something on there this week?
Apologies for no quick reply. It was missed with other things being written.

Reil has an ongoing meet. Snowbird is there all summer. His is the 5th wheeler upon entrance.
Nothing going on per se but good spot for cycling and nice walk along river with fair chance of other funsters being there.
As good as it gets along the moselle

Just round the back of the aire at Eppingen is a river walk.
Must have seen 30 of these. Fairly certain they are Coypu. Allowed you to feed them!! Or one did. I preferred using zoom.
2 feet long easily then add the tail

Seriously Austria is a Pita. I've no idea why but they fine MHers for fun. There are a couple of routes through although involving high mountain passes and yes if you get there and one is closed you are stuffed. The lowest toll route to/from Italy is Luxembourg, Germany Switzerland. The Swiss pass for over 3.5tonnes is about £30 for any 10 days of your choosing per year, you just need to be careful which tunnel you enter/exit through St Gotthard is essentially free and one of the other ones and Simplon Pass from brescia is pretty special but more complicated.
