From Spain to Norway - the long way round

Too true...a great way of describing our route.

Have you ridden your bikes through one yet??? kept seeing the plungers on the outside of the tunnels which cyclists are meant to press so the beware cyclists signs light up!!

I'll try a piccie!!

This is all we knew about what was to come.

That's the one...but at the hairpin bend there must have been a 'service exit' because I went to pull over to let a car past and it disappeared into the rock face, that or its a secret entrance to Hogwarts:D:D...

Wouldn't attempt it by bike. We wondered what cyclists had to do. Some tunnels we've seen a service road/cycle lane go around the outside but others it's just not possible!!!

Not seen anyone cycling in any tunnel we've been through. Brave people!

Saw one family with toddlers in a bike trailer who were in between tunnels and I was glad I passed them where I did.. Saw them later after they had passed through the next one...

So. Yesterday we started the drive "over" rather than "through" in the 25km tunnel :Eeek:.

The road was narrow in places and when I say narrow I mean single lane. Luckily we didn't meet anything on these sections! Martin relaxed a bit when we got stretches with passing places and then relaxed a bit more when it widened out to two lanes. Couldn't totally relax as it didn't have barriers even on tight bends.

The narrow road with passing places.

And the road higher up without barriers. There was a drop off on the right!!!

We drove up, and over, looking for a place to park to go walking. We were on the descent, after crossing the tunnel twice as seen on the GPS!!! before we found what we were looking for. A chat with a Norwegian man just returning to his car gave us the information we needed for a walk. He was off down to watch his grandson play football but had snatched a quick hike for himself. He warned us that the road going down was worse than what we'd already driven :(.

Crossing the tunnel. Don't know have far below it is.

Anyway we did the uphill hike to a viewpoint high above the Aurlandsfjorden and town of Aurlands-vangen. Lovely views but it was a bit hazy so photos aren't brilliant.

Back down at the van (I picked a box of bilberries on the way) we discussed our options. Stay put for the day and drive down early morning or go for it??? We went for it! The road was single track for longer than previously and we were generally lucky that we met any traffic at passing places except for two cars driven by Japanese who struggled to reverse 10 metres. All was well eventually.

Views on the descent.

We topped up with fuel at 12.35 a litre and decided to drive route 50 and head to Voss the long way round as we don't want to be there until Wednesday. Our map shows a tourist route. It didn't show the tunnel system described above and you know what we felt about driving that.

We parked last night next to a small fishing lake (no fishing for Martin as licence required) and were joined by a Brit registered silver van. Out popped two dreadlocked, tatood youngsters. It turned out they are Kiwis doing a European tour. Their living quarters look cosy, to say the least. Everything in its place and bed on the floor in the middle. Good for them.

Now breakfast time. Dull start to the day and the forecast is not good. We'll have to see what today brings. Didn't see our Kiwi neighbours to say goodbye at 9.00 am:LOL:

Coffee stop and better internet so I'll add some piccies and then post.

The only good thing to come out of Brexit is these wonderful Oaty biscuits...only a Quid a packet which for Norway is quite cheap.
Intend stocking up on leaving as we (Me) have taken a liking to them...very much like Hobnobs...

just catching up after a few days at riverside, with no signal for internet or flaky at time, Mike sends his regards, it was their 25 wedding anniversary celebrations yesterday and the had a surprise mad hatters tea party with the guests dressed up, I think it must have be up at the village hall.

Enjoy and stay safe, Martin those roads look, interesting to say the least

Great photos! Great weather! Hope you find Jan and Eli in good health.

We've driven across wild and windy moors today. First stopping for coffee, as above, at Hol where they also have a wooden church.

IMG_20170828_111328926.jpg

The moors bit followed, after stopping at Geilo for basic supplies. No room for the cheap fuel at less than NOK12 a litre as we topped up yesterday :(

We stopped for lunch at a perfect parking area except for the wind. Carried on towards Eidfjord. We wondered how we were going to descend from 1267 metres to fjord level in about 35km. We soon found out with a corkscrew tunnel system descending quickly.

We arrived to different weather in Eidfjord and to the sight of a cruise ship.

We're now on a side fjord where we'll stay for the night. Martin has gone fishing. He's already hooked his thumb resulting in a quick spot of first aid but he's not letting that stop him!!

We're parked with a Swiss couple (with baby) in a camper van and the guy has gone fishing also.

Competition time

And its just started raining . I'm warm and dry and on the internet in the van though :D

That tunnel doesn't count, its wide and good lighting!!

There's a surprise in tomorrow's tunnel though...

Not so well lit!

Looking forward to tomorrow's surprise.

We went through a variety of interesting tunnels including one corkscrew one and one that positively scared us (very very dark and not really wide enough). Met a truck coming the other way who wanted more than his fair share of the road.

I liked this tunnel best , it was quite an expensive tunnel and we hadn't really appreciated from the map that it had a roundabout in it. It was plenty wide enough and well lit, about a week into our trip we started marking tunnels out of 5 :)

do you need us to DHL blue plasters ..just in case

did he (Martin) catch any fishs)

With all that water you think there would be millions of fish? Why can't Martin catch one?!

Shh woman, hes thinking of the brexit trade deals and disnt want to scupper them

Have you had tea? Or is it rash ions again as no fish?!!

I bought some chilli marinated king prawns today so we had them with biriani rice (cheats packet, microwavable, but not in our van) filled out with some chickpeas and sweet corn.

IMG_20170828_173632176.jpg

The prawns cost about the same as a bag of carrots!!!

Fresh fruit and veg are silly prices here.

We're now at Ulvick. Did @Jenben s "blue roundabout in a tunnel" and we're parked in their very spot. Look who's out next to the water after stocking up on tackle in the Co-op!!! He's lost most of his original stock.

Two differences the hedge has grown and the blue sky has gone!

but it is lovly

but it is lovly

We've moved now! To the "official" parking a little further along the road ... because it's a different place to try fishing from

I don't care I'm watching La Vuelta just heading back towards Totana before they do the climb.

Note the tiny yellow dot near the red hut!

@jumartoo The weather is worse at Totana... what are you watching it on?

I think the weather will be better than 35+ degrees.
