From Spain to Norway - the long way round

After our walk and a refreshing cuppa back at the van, we decided to head out down towards the ferry at Linge. Passing many places to park we arrived at the fjord at Valdall where there was a good parking (but not camping!) area next to a pier for fishing. Martin actually caught one that he put back and almost landed another but it got away . At least he was doing better than the last attempts! He decided to have one last go, and lost his lure :(.

Not being able to find a place to stay we drove onto the ferry (last one on) and before our wheels had stopped turning the ferry was moving.

We hoped to find somewhere to stop overnight before Geiranger but everywhere had "no motorhomes/no camping" signs. So ... we drove much further than we wanted and we've now "done" Gairangerfjorden". We even pulled into a camping but the available spaces were water-logged.

My photos, again as in other touristy areas, were taken "on the move" through the window.

We are parked up for the night somewhere on the road no. 63. We've showered and had chilli and rice and cheese and wine (again slightly over our self enforced allowance) and are feeling happy. We've had a good day.

Where are you off to next? The glaciers or else where?

The campsite in Gerainger is great - right on the waterfront. Good fishing opportunities too.

Where are the glaciers? Are they touristy? We've found a Via Ferrata we might do at Loen but we've not committed ourselves yet.

We pulled into the campsite. It was packed, except for very wet, grassy areas. #nottouristinclinedrus

The next valley along from Loen, turn up at Olden... Will be touristy during the day but late afternoon onwards it became very quiet... The path to it was used by little quads to take the cruisers to it in comfort....

Thanks. That's along our (loosely and subject to change) proposed route. It could be an option for an afternoon.

sorry to keep reading about the poor weather, I have to keep hiding this information from Bev, the long driving days are bad enough, if it rains all the while we are up there she will be flying home early o_O

really hope things improve for you weather wise, on the basis that they will do for us as well :)(y)

looks like we have missed our possible rendezvous, safe travels, will be watching your next bit for our next trip up here :)

It's up past Olden, if you pick a day when there are no cruise boats in ( as we did by luck ) you will have the glacier pretty much to yourselves.

Ooops. She can see my Facebook posts!!! But today was great weather so should be OK.

Can we cycle up to them? New bikes not MTBs.

From where ? There is a campsite/car park at the end that you can stroll up to the glacier or do a longer walk around the glacier. This wasn't suitable when we were there as it was too early in the season.

Oh, OK thanks. We can drive up there then. I thought it had to be by bus or something from Olden so thought we could cycle. Driving up sounds much better!

There is a car park at the top that allows motorhomes to park overnight. Can't remember how much it was, for a few kroner more you could stay in the campsite next door. It was a lovely spot, if the weather had been nicer we would have stayed a bit longer.

There's an ACSI site as well along the valley road... The only one we came across!!

Judith loving the thread and stunning photos .
Sorry Martin can't catch any fish at the moment but I'm sure he will again!!

We spent a long time deliberating this morning as to which direction to go. We contacted Jan and Eli and made a firm commitment to meet them in Voss next Wednesday. So we have a week to fill. We decided to leave the fjords and go to some high mountains instead. We're now on the east side of the Jotunheimen National Park and have booked a ferry tomorrow to take us to the start of a ridge walk!!! We had to do one didn't we?

The internet is poor to none existent so no photos, even not this post maybe. Here goes ...

One day may have made all the difference in meeting up with David and Bev but when the weather's good we need to make the best use of it. If there hadn't been so many people in Geirenger we may have had some time there ... the permutations are endless!!!

I hope they have a good trip and can slow down a bit now.

Good morning

Its beautiful today but it was very cold last night and frost on the grass this morning. We spent last night on a simple campsite a Fjord Camping. An area owned by the community and where they allow camping for NOK 50 a night (about £5).

We're now at the parking for the short ferry trip to take us to the start of the ridge walk (with many others!). I'm hoping for some great photos today but don't know when I'll be able to post them. I'll give one a try now.

From our parking place looking down the lake. The ridge walk is on the right.

Looks a waste wonderful spot Judith
Enjoy your walk
Looking forward to seeing the pics later

Just got back from the walk. Best we've done here yet. We walked part of it with a Norwegian couple in their 20s and sat and had lunch together. You might spot them on some of my piccies as they've got their flags.

We'd booked a 9.30 ferry but caught the 8.45 instead. It was full of a school group so the first challenge was to get ahead of them!

I'll let the piccies speak for themselves.

Your definition of a nice walk is very different to mine! That looks like serious climbing. Fantastic scenery. Always surprised when you mention the number of people but we went in February so I guess that's the difference!

We're now in our overnight spot on the shore of a lake. We've been joined by a Norwegian motorhome and a Dutch tent. On the parking area above us is a German motorhome.

I've been bilberry picking across the road and Martin has been quizzing the Norwegian about parking up for the night.

Apparently you can park for three days/nights in this type of situation. You can park on private land but the landowner is within his rights to charge you a fee.

The NO CAMPING signs we're not sure whether they only mean tents. That's our next question when we see him again.
