From Spain to Norway - the long way round

We're now in our overnight spot on the shore of a lake. We've been joined by a Norwegian motorhome and a Dutch tent. On the parking area above us is a German motorhome.

I've been bilberry picking across the road and Martin has been quizzing the Norwegian about parking up for the night.

Apparently you can park for three days/nights in this type of situation. You can park on private land but the landowner is within his rights to charge you a fee.

The NO CAMPING signs we're not sure whether they only mean tents. That's our next question when we see him again.

You'll have as good a time there if the weather's good. Give our regards to Mick. Tell him Martin and Judith from Spain, that should remind him. We may be there in early October ourselves.

Looks a touch like Crib Goch and the views from Snowdon...
Sure...Crib Goch, Striding Edge and many others....this went on a bit...it was solid rock throughout.....no vegetation whatsoever, pure rock....about a grade 1/2 scramble I would imagine...worth doing..

Thank God I was nowhere near when you decided to attempt that suicidal walk! I would have had to have a sudden knee problem. Beautiful pictures, breathtaking landscape.

It would be a walk in the park for you and Lester. (Other dogs were taking part). Not sure about Ros though. How is she with heights?

We were approached by a man walking in the opposite direction with his son (who looked about 7 or 8 to us). He wanted to know what it would be like to descend!!! I wouldn't have liked to do that. He then told us HE didn't like heights!!!

Don't know whether they're still up there somewhere.

Today we headed back towards Voss for about 30km then found a Camper Contact parking area at the start/end of a gravelled toll road. Not being able to resist, we got the bikes out. A comment to Martin the last time we rode the bikes about the gears making a noise, had him doing a "five minute" adjustment which took over an hour to sort out!!!

Eventually we got on the bikes and cycled for about 17km along the (in English) the Milk Road. It was an untarmacced toll road (easily driven by moho's) through the summer farms. In times past (and maybe even now) the milk truck would go along and collect the milk from the churns left out at each farm.

The farms.

We arrived at a bridge which gave us a turn round point. We watched someone fishing in the river. He didn't catch anything either, at least whilst we were watching.

And now, a gentle reminder to the other half of Funster @Hagstrom

Ros my dear don't forget

We left our rural overnight spot and drove through ever changing scenery. First of all we rejoined the E16 as we needed water. Last night we'd filled up our water bottles at a church but didn't like to fill the tank. We called in at petrol stations to see if we could fill up (we'd pay) but they didn't have an outside tap.

Our first stop was at a rest place on the E16 near the village of Ryfoss.

We then stopped to look at the Stavkirk of Øye.

IMG_20170826_093628170.jpg

Shortly after we turned right onto the 53 which started to climb out of the valley. Our first views were of snowy mountains across a lake.

Still needing water we began to look for a stream or waterfall. Where there was water there was nowhere to park and vice versa. Eventually we pulled into a huge parking area guarded by sheep.

They followed Martin to and from the water.

We put enough in the tank so we could flush the loo and wash up. We stayed for a coffee and the sheep enjoyed scratching their bums on the camper step. (Note to self: don't park overnight where there are animals).

We continued on through a landscape of cabins, some of which we're disguised.

Martin wanted to have a go at :reel: so we needed to continue and drop down to a fjord.

From the rural, remote cabins we had a view of the town of Øvre Ardal.

IMG_20170826_110947938.jpg

The road snaked down, past the town and on towards the fjord. We stopped to buy a few things at a REMA 1000 and there just happened to be a connected hosepipe in the car park so we half filled our tank.

Lunch was taken next to a fishing spot where Martin lost more things he than he gained but I picked some raspberries.

We carried on after lunch and stopped at the ferry back on the E16. We didn't intend to use it but Martin could fish from there. We were alongside the parking lanes for the ferry and learnt all about getting value from the ferry by hiding passengers as you go on. I'll not say what nationality was giving out this info

We're now parked up for our overnight spot just before we turn left on the 243 and follow the road up and over. There is a 24510m tunnel but we think the views will be better going over!!!

View from my kitchen window tonight.

It's no chore doing the chores!!!

And our van parked up. Martin's out fishing again!

The annoying thing is we can see fish but they're not jumping onto the hooks!

Meatball pasta again tonight!!!

Got terribly slow internet here where we're parked in the middle of nowhere so no piccies today. We've had an epic day of driving from single track roads with no crash barriers to roads with tunnels that climbed uphill and bent in the middle and even had signs warning of the possibility of sheep!!! In between we did a walk and I picked bilberries again today.

We're now somewhere on the road no. 50, taking a long way round to get to Voss where we're meeting Jan and Eli on Wednesday. The road to their cabin will be child's play after today.

I really liked route 50..even though it rained when we were on it...

At the end of Route 50, turning right towards Voss on the 7, you come to Geilo... Cheapest fuel in Norway on one visit not so cheap the second visit but still filled up.. Stopped to visit the Spar shop, which Wendy said was her best shopping experience in Norway ( even though they gave us half a chicken when we clearly asked for a HOT chicken!!), and when we came out noticed the diesel price had fallen by 1.5 NOKs. :(:(

Driving has been a challenge of a lifetime...a tunnel is a tunnel, but when you add interesting features like....roundabouts...inclines...hairpin bends...unlit sections....it moves into a much different driving pleasure....if there is such a thing...my navigator tells me we have passed the most spectacular views ever....my focus was on the next 30 metres of tarmac or how close I am to the solid rock side of the tunnel.
I now understand the meaning of tunnel vision....

Is it on the 50 when the road is like a corkscrew INSIDE the mountain?? I can't remember which road but the tunnels were unlit and narrow and the lorries coming the other way would light up with everything they had, including spotlights on the cab roof, to say a) we're wide, b) we're coming through, c) here's some light to help you find a crevice to hide in...:LOL:

Anthea glad you're enjoying reading about our trip. Early on we were a little despondent when the weather was so crap and there were so many people around we couldn't get to see the sights we'd travelled so far for.

Some parts were so highly anticipated that they didn't really live up to our expectations and then we've found other places that we've really loved so its made up for the low times.

The last week, especially has, for us, been wonderful. BUT wait until the weather changes :(

You got it!!!

Only one big truck came through but lit up like a Christmas tree.

Positive purple power and good weather for you!!

Too true...a great way of describing our route.

Anyone thinking of future travels to Scandiland consider fitting extra lighting to the front..eg. Powerful LED Driving lamps,
I would have found these most useful in tunnels and while driving at dusk...
