From Spain to Norway - the long way round

OK...point taken...but firstly its not edible and secondly how on earth did he catch such a fantastic fish when he cannot find his eyes to put his glasses on.

Carp is a delicacy in many countries - especially English ones, eaten by foreign visitors

Judith,

When we are next alone, you must tell me the secrets of getting that wonderful glaze on your chow mein.

An Admirer

For anyone out there into bikes (the motor kind), seen on our watery walk today.

Even to me they were more interesting than the scene from a viewpoint we climbed up to.

The weather doesn't look as if its been totally kind to you on this trip.
If its any kind of cancellation, the weather here in Sunny Sussex has been pretty crappy too!
I've we'd still got our van we would have been gone, in search of some decent weather weeks ago.

Chow mein, aaaah. Nuff said. I won't tell.

We knew we'd not get great weather in Norway for the length of our trip but it is taking the edge off the enjoyment now. So much we want to see and do would be better in dry (preferably sunny) conditions.

That's life .

The forecast for where you are seems better from tomorrow, and a little warmer as the week goes on!! Dryer too, though heavy rain today and perhaps again next weekend...

Thanks. That's the same as a forecast we've seen. Hope they're right!

We're quite comfortable on this campsite (the first one we've used in Norway). Got ALL our washing done and almost dried so we've made the most of a bad job.

Leaving here tomorrow anyway to go to Åndalsnes.

To add insult to injury the German fishermen are cooking fish outside right at this time. Martin hasn't succeeded again today. They did go out in a boat though but not far .

Martin's thinking he needs new lures!

Its not shop-bought, I'm making it from goat stuff and Kefir grains! I'd send you a photo but it may put you off Chow Mein.

Woke to silence, then pitter patter of rain. We'd already decided to move on to Åndalsnes as we needed a bit of shopping. Food basics and some more lures. We had a quick stop on the way so Martin could try his luck in a different fjord. Unfortunately he didn't last long because he was too cold.

Åndalsnes across the fjord.

Our dilemma was what to do about the ridge walk tomorrow. The forecast is good but we have to reserve and pay for bus tickets to get us to the start and at NOK150 each we'd have to go whatever the conditions. There is only one bus at 9 30 so no waiting to see. The hill behind on the photo is the end of the ridge so it wasn't very tempting. After a little discussion we decided to bag it and go and drive the Trollstigen instead.

Now to show how little research we've done about this we thought we would be going downhill! Wrong. Up we went. The advantage of so much rain means there are spectacular waterfalls.

The waterfalls are stunning

If it's any consolation to Martin. I bought a fishing rod after our trip to Norway. Have used it a handful of times since and never caught a thing.

That's why they call it "fishing" and not "catching" .......;)

At the top we did the obligatory walk to the viewpoints and the view back down to the road and valley.

There's always one!

To be fair there is a platform the other side of the wall but he could still have a nasty fall. And no, it wasn't Martin!!!

It doesn't look real!

I took a photo especially for Phil @Scout cos he's got a staff like yours!

From the visitor centre we drove up and over. By this time the weather was dry but with low cloud. Undeterred we went to hike to the top of one of the mountains on a marked route. Not much can be said about it except it was very up - and down - and in low cloud the whole way. Just to prove we got there.

Maybe tomorrow we'll see where we've been. The skies are clearing and it could be the good day that's been forecast and the views from that ridge walk will be stunning ... but we'll not see them, we've got another route in mind from the visitor centre here where we've gone back to to overnight. Our options were to drop further down into the valley or come back here. Internet signal won out!!! And anyway we've not seen the views here yet.

The heater's on and the two duvets may be used tonight!

This morning dawned bright with just a little residual cloud. We had our boots on and were on the hill by 9.30. The first climb was in the shade and it was very steep. Parts of it had been built by Sherpas so it reminded us of Peru! Once we stepped out of the shade the temperature rose dramatically. It must have been 14 degrees! The route crossed a flattish area and then took off again uphill through boulder fields. Without the red markers finding the way would have been impossible. It certainly wouldn't have been possible yesterday.

The Sherpa steps in the shade.

in the snow. Don't really need to say that, do I!

Finding our way through the boulders. The mountain in the background in Trollveggen, the tallest vertical rock in Europe and not our destination!

Glad the weather picked up Judith, looks like a great walk.

It was, thanks.

Why are we (you and us) always in the wrong places at the wrong time? We could have met up in Derbyshire either in June or October!!!

Never mind December will soon come around :D.

After our walk and a refreshing cuppa back at the van, we decided to head out down towards the ferry at Linge. Passing many places to park we arrived at the fjord at Valdall where there was a good parking (but not camping!) area next to a pier for fishing. Martin actually caught one that he put back and almost landed another but it got away . At least he was doing better than the last attempts! He decided to have one last go, and lost his lure :(.

IMG_20170822_155406206.jpg

Not being able to find a place to stay we drove onto the ferry (last one on) and before our wheels had stopped turning the ferry was moving.

We hoped to find somewhere to stop overnight before Geiranger but everywhere had "no motorhomes/no camping" signs. So ... we drove much further than we wanted and we've now "done" Gairangerfjorden". We even pulled into a camping but the available spaces were water-logged.

My photos, again as in other touristy areas, were taken "on the move" through the window.

We are parked up for the night somewhere on the road no. 63. We've showered and had chilli and rice and cheese and wine (again slightly over our self enforced allowance) and are feeling happy. We've had a good day.
