Finally the days of over priced motorhomes is over

Prices are going to stay high for at least another couple of years. Its not that dealers are full of stock now, its the fact we can actually get some of the part exchanges through!
Supply issues are still horrific, new vehicles will be a problem for another couple of years. I am cherry picking what stands to put sales people on at the NEC as some models I cant get until the 2025 season!
Doesnt bode well for someone like me. Want to buy our first MH as we just retired early. Going to NEC. Want to buy new but wont wait 2 years. Life is too short.

Hi Eddie, welcome to the Fun. Don't worry about not being able to buy new.

I can pretty much guarantee that if someone's first motorhome is 15 years old, they will have just as much anticipation/excitement and fun as the first owner did 15 years previously.

We sold our horse lorry last year. I should have kept it and paid for a conversion to a motorhome. Maybe second hand is the right way to go if i cant get a new one.

That's not much these days, we have just ordered a new one quite a bit over 100k and it's only a mid range van.
It the cost to change that counts.
Yep Lennys right, the prices of new or second hand mohos are still generally high for most people, as are the new prices for electric cars. (30k plus)
we havent got enough in our ‘cost to change’ bank to change if you see what I mean, so we are simply going to a top quality converter and get them to do some nice little swanky bits we’ve planned for our existing pvc , that we know and love,

A good van conversion can work out cheaper and arguably better quality than new. Research well on good converters theres a few out there but also rogue traders, I ghost into the vw forum and theres horror stories about some of them.
I often see horse lorries and think ‘ perfect for a motorhome’ Then think 🤔 ‘do they smell of horse pee? Do they?’

We had a complete coach rebuild of the shell of our lorry about 5 years ago. Insurance paid. Really good job by a firm in Birmingham though it cost 20k. Nope, they dont smell if kept clean. We had the lorry from new. Something i dont see in motorhomes that we had in the lorry is a generator. We had one that was almost silent running.

The current financial climate isn't affecting everyone negativity.

Where we live there is a lot of new money, we know in our friendship group a couple who have just bought an £80k van, another couple who have just bought a pricey van and another who are looking to upgrade to one that is over £100k. People are still spending.
Paid £93K for our new Hymer last October, last I looked, same spec now about £103K.

No idea what will happen with new MoHo prices BUT I am certain that come Jan/feb
the financial situation for mist people will look completely different than today

my dealer has had no stock for over a year and a half BUT I see their stock is rapidly increasing
Houses were doing 10-20% above home report , I am now seeing sales slowing down
& fixed prices on some , I’m pretty sure change is on its way 🥺

most people believe there is a recession on the way , possibly even a depression 🤕

All those vans one sees parked up in Euroland are probably waiting for a chip to be delivered.

I was talking to the guys at CamperUK this week. They sold 17 vans over the weekend, dont think the bubble has burst just yet.
Did you watch million pound motorhomes?

Apparently Autotrail are producing 20 vans per week👀

Looking across the whole of the U.K. at both new and pre loved motorhomes, there's zero evidence to indicate any type of price drop.

For new models the cost of specific appliances, plywood sheets, upholstery & factory fitted optional accessories has remained largely stagnant, it's the outlay for the base vehicle which has hugely increased.

A Ducato 140ps AT9 skeletal chassis will set you back in excess of £48,500k + VAT... yes, nearly £60k all in. Same goes for the Transit 130ps AT6 wide track moho specific chassis in Trend spec. They're no different in price to a panel van, in fact unit for unit they're more expensive due to the down time for construction alterations needed on the production line.

The coachbuilder may claim the VAT and receive a discount on bulk orders but the cost will still be well over £40k even before the shipping & homologation (average £28k) which is all passed onto the end user.

A successful company or group then needs to make a profit.

Consider Trigano, probably the largest coachbuilder. Here in the U.K. alone they own Auto Sleeper, Marquis & Auto Trail. In Europe the list is as long as your arm. They saw a near 35% sales increase in 2021 giving them a £3 billon turnover - very nice for them - but even then profit was down from 7.8% to 7.5%.

EHG figures were similar - 23% increase, £2.7B turnover 8% profit.

Collectively supermarkets do that every week.
35% increase in sales
Profit down.0.3%
Any company would take that
Very good business 👏
Overall profit rise

Even their cheapest A Class the Exiss, now you are into around £108k by the time you have put a reasonable spec on it.

True although it does indicate that the increase in prices is not just because they can otherwise the percentage profit would be increased. Also if their net profit is 7.5% what scope is there for significant price reductions if the market slows? It certainly wouldn't support anything like a 10% reduction in price theyd be running at a loss.

Even doing a van conversion is not cheap now with the way base vehicle prices have gone up.
I had a look on the Fiat site yesterday and priced up a fairly basic panel van.
LWB, Maxi chassis the only extras I added were 180 engine, auto box, climate control, cruise & traction plus - How Much £59k. I could have easily added over £5k more in options.

UK this time, that will be a first, no discounts avaliable this time so costing the same without the hassle.
Yes, know what you mean. I’m tempted with buying in UK for first time. The price difference seems to be narrowing and the hassle doesn’t get any easier.

Blimey! We just happened to be driving past Southdowns Motorhomes July 2021 and had been planning to buy in 2022, just bought one off the showroom and added a load of retrofit extras to match what we would have bought factory largely cos the sales fella said prices were going up significantly. Glad we did as would probably have scrapped the idea, the thought of paying over £100K was a psychological barrier not a financial one in those circumstances.

Also if they stop accepting the European C of C it will be a lot more hassle and getting insurance on the VIN is getting more difficult.
I've ordered LHD and German mains sockets, 13amp UK mains sockets are a pain in the butt in a van. I will be using mains a lot more as I will kit it out with Lithium & a decent size inverter.

Was for us to but no choice to get what we wanted but trade in was far higher than expected and price & trade in price fixed even though delivery is a year away.

Victron MultiPlus is the way to go Lenny HB 👍🏻

If history repeats its self the leisure industry will do well in a resession.

Although there has been a big increase of younger people in the market the bulk of the higher end vans are still bought by us oldies with savings & we want to enjoy our self before we pop our clogs.

Been considering it but a bit of a waste for us as we hardly ever use EHU. Probably go for a 2000va phoenix.
Also if I spend too much on the electrics I'll have a problem with 'er indoors when I want the full air.

LHD or RHD? And who are you buying it from?

And when is your old Hymer up for sale ........................ just asking for a friend.
WHAT the way he drives up those mountains with it NO CHANCE

Good point, I have mentioned to the boss lady that if we trade in like we swap the car every few years it’s the difference that counts. I did the same with a new BMW just picked up, ordered a year ago and the prices fixed, so made £7K positive equity on the 2.5 year old X3.

Can't justify spending on a car we don't use it enough I have a 10 year old Kia Venga bought it new but it only did 970 miles last year where as the Motorhome does 8-10k a year.

We don't use either enough to justify regular changes had the mh 8 years the car 6 ( and bought 6 months old). It depends how much the status of a new vehicle is worth to you if it's something you don't use it a lot..

Happy days, we do the same, last change of our Ford Kuga produced an unbelievable 11k of equity. Never happened before!

Yes had too many sleepless nights in the past worrying about registration, insurance on VIN, headlights, etc. Changes to import regs. won't make it any easier. I’d really like to stick to LHD if possible though. Was looking at the Globecar Summit 640, but as there only seems to be one for sale in the whole of Germany on Mobile.de at the moment....... I'll have to scout around a bit and widen my horizons.
