Doc on tour, France, Spain, Morroco.

I have read loads of things on the internet. Not sure the relevance of what the survivors knew about what was happening outside the village .
To say what they knew was pure speculation is pretty daft . They were there .
I don't have an opinion I'm quoting facts . You tell us they are rebuilding the place , they are not . I could go on but there would be no point
Aye whatever.

You've quoted no facts .

There is a building there being rebuilt . I saw it ,I photographed it. The materials are not original.

There are at least 3 cars placed on bricks , they didn't simply stop there and burnt there as is claimed.

I said the survivors were speculating about the events leading up to the event because they couldn't possibly know.

They had no idea what was happening

You decided to quote me saying they were speculating and answer "Aye ok"

Here's another one

These signs on that building are not original

If you wish to believe they are then it's absolutely pointless carrying on this conversation .

Believe what you like , defend what you like 🤷‍♂️ I dinnae really care.

The accounts of what happened were taken from many sources including the interrogation of Nazis after the war and communications intelligence. In 1953 there was a military tribunal heard against the surviving 65 out of 200 or so SS men who had been involved, two were executed as a result so I think the events were pieced together sufficiently well to convince a court to use capitol punishment.
There were also cases dismissed and overturned because of lack of evidence it's actually quite shocking how few were actually held accountable.

Surely there has to be some restoration or there will be nothing left to see and remember them. Ashes to ashes, dust to dust etc - it was 80 years ago. The French want to preserve the horror story for future generations to see and learn from it. Was that not what DeGaulle wanted and decreed after the war. Whilst some bits may no longer be an absolutely true representation it does its job. Personally I disliked the visitor centre which looked like a German Bunker from the outside and the commercialisation of it but that happens to all famous war sites.

I totally agree Tam, also some were in East Germany and were not extradited, presumably because of the cold war.

As I said earlier it's just my opinion . Most of it is unrestored and left alone and that's how I think it should be. I don't see the need to rebuild certain buildings or place things in certain locations to be photogenic etc.

The bits that haven't been restored have survived enough to tell the story the others would too.

I avoided the visitor centre as I saw it online and from past experience they are always unpleasant.

I believe in preservation of course and they've done that by putting fences and gates up to avoid people clambering over things etc .

Just a few bits I found odd and unnecessary and as i said so did others I overheard there

I don't believe it's something that should be restored though.

We were there three months ago. For me seeing the photos on the wall and the empty buildings was enough. I could make my own mind up about the place. I didn't need to see anything else.

Over the years I've seen more than my fare share of real death and devastation. To enable me to fill in the gaps.

Whatever way you look at it, it's history and shouldn't be forgotten.

There were other Nazi massacres sadly, which have been largely forgotten by the outside world because there isn't a memorial like Oradour sur glane, so however they choose to maintain it, it's doing its job.

When I was a teenager I read a book called Silence on Monte sole, another massacre but in Italy, it is not as well known as Oradour but it was equally as barbaric and with a greater death toll.

Basically they are preserving the site which is the correct thing to do .
The visitor centre is , you're right , a visitor centre . But they do sell various books relevant to what happened
The wall with names and ages etc of victims was , to me , very moving .

Moved on this morning heading for Sarlat but I've discovered another place on the road with an interesting looking chateau and a free Aire so I've pulled in here for lunch at the minute and will walk down to see the chateau

Salignac-ayvigues

Weird thing on the motorway today , cruising along at 56mph , cruise control on van going great up and down inclines holding speed etc , was getting low on fuel so I'd just popped a fuel stop waypoint in to the satnav and about 5 minutes later van gives a slight jerk ,there's a popping sound , that bleeding red injector light gave a couple of flashes then everything back to normal ...I'd passed a motorway services further back with diesel at €1.79 so I'd thought sod that I'll get it in a village cheaper , so I gets to the village a few miles off motorway and it was €1.85 😡🤬😱 . No choice then but to fill up as I was nearly on the reserve .. so 72 litres 🥲🥲 €135 😭😭.

476km on 72 litres of fuel ...not worked out what that is in mpg yet.

Stuck a dose of fuel cleaner in again too incase the pop was something in the fuel but it may have been a brief sticking of wastegate ....who knows, so far it hasn't done it again and van has driven beautifully the last 50km since then on some very steep windy roads and accelerates well up them in 5th gear , this van is so different to moby .. you can change up gears sooner and still accelerate well in this van , moby you had to keep changing down and taking revs really high before changing up just for it to die a death and have to change down again . This Seems to prefer to be kept in a higher gear even at slower speeds . Which is a lot more comfortable.

Right I'm off for some lunch , might just stay here tonight and do sarlat tomorrow

Carrefour is far better, on the edge of town short walk in, the E.Leclerc is way out of town .

Carrefour has a huge dedicated area for Camping Cars.

Flipping heck Tam even I would pay that in France.

That's 0.85 a gallon more , when putting in 16 gallon that's a bleeding lot

I got caught out in Italy, cheaper on motorway than local town.
Try to do your next fill up with super diesel. It will help with injectors, and don't let it run too low. I carry a 5L spare. A long sat van may have bits in the tank. Your fuel filter is new I guess.

Yeah it had all filters changed, also been running fuel cleaner through it periodically. To be honest when we changed filters the fuel in them was cleaner than I expected.

I generally don't let it go below 1/4 tank but never passed a fuel station before hitting motorway this morning so the first one I got to was €1.79 should have just gone in there but lesson learned lol.

I believe its a 90 litre tank in this and it took 72 to fill it but I wasn't willing to test it lol. Guage was very low ...no fuel light on but not far away I expect. ...hard to believe it still had 18litre in it.

18.52 mpg

Eh?

So don I. 😎

Approximately 😎

Ian
I got roughly 18.5 too when I worked it out .

But I guess if you deduct the time it's sat still with engine running it's probably a bit more than that .

I expected around 20mpg from this van going on previous ones I've had so that's not too bad at all. For it's size and weight it does OK.

I would also suggest muck in the fuel tank might have caused a hiccough.

Bit of muck from the bottom of the tank jiggled up and lower than usual fuel amount in the tank???

Tam

what does your moho weigh fully laden, any ideas

I’m asking as we’re at around 5400kgs and getting 23-24 mpg

Admitted newer more efficient Euro 6 Fiat 180bhp with 9sp auto

Just asking out of curiosity tbh 👍

When you get 88.8L (90L tank) in at the first fuel station in Lux ( wasn’t paying Belgian prices) now that’s cutting it fine🤭🤭🤭🤭 light was on for over 65 mls😉😁😁

Edit, forgot to add Mrs Westy chewed all her false nails off🤣🤣
