Actual vet charges for Animal Health Certificates across UK

Our vet wants £250! Stamford Bridge Battleflars vets

Vet down the road wants £150. Still expensive but worth a short trip to save £100

Just curious if there are any working vets on this forum who can comment on these forms, my daughter is a working vet and rolls her eyes when l mention the AHC, she has refused to be involved with completing these forms due to the possible repercussions of completing them wrongly.
Prior to being allowed to complete these forms a vet has to attend a course, the form seen at the front of house is only part of what is needed, behind the scenes when the client has gone there is a 48 page form in multiple languages to complete. The trained vet at her practice has to spend at least 4 hours completing forms in multiple languages, depending where you are going which they generally don't fully understand, so unless you fully understand everything in french, german, flemish, hungarian, and spanish etc etc you are completing it 'blind'. l also believe the vet has a obligation to see the animal in person so theres more time and cost.
Talking with her fellow colleagues in the industry they generally feel very frustrated with these forms and people need to know that vets are not picking charges out of fresh air but just trying to cover their time and costs.
It would be interesting to hear other qualified vets views

I've just spent 7 weeks in Spain with our dog it cost us £240 in total for the AHC. whilst in Spain we went to a vet to check out and make appointment to have her wormed for the return journey. The vet asked if we had a passport we said no he then proceeded to fill out the forms and did a health check on our dog administered another Rabies jab and walked away with a European dog passport all for the princely sum of 44 euros no more AHC for us

The vet may spend 4 hours completing forms however that's not gonna be only for one client but when they do them for several in bulk otherwise whoever is doing them needs to go back to school! Also it's only 12 pages, not 48 so I've got no idea where they've got that figure from unless as I've said it was 4 separate ones which means 1 hour each.

As for different languages, AFAIK the forms are identical other than the 2nd language on them changes but the sections/boxes etc will be the same - all that is needed is a crib sheet to follow to ensure its done correctly.

As for training, that'll be similar to what they had to do for the Pet Passport which vets charged nothing like they are for these AHCs. I know it creates work and that they should obviously be paid for this but the prices that are being charged by the vast majority are extortionate.

Same as what I did in October when I went to Ireland for my 2 border collies. :-) Well almost the same, I didn't bother getting the AHC's

Out of my area is the reason I have the motorhome. Being a cheapskate, I travelled miles via Larne to ROI, and paid for a European Pet Passport, so no AHC required for the next ten years.
I live in London but from NI and am over at the moment with my dog. She's a rescue and has a Ukrainian passport so was planning to get a French one when we start our trip. Thinking if I could get it now, could nip down to the Dundalk area - can you recommend the vet you used? Sorry if it's already somewhere on this thread but couldn't see it

Can't help with that one, I'm afraid. I went to a vet in Carndonagh, which is in the opposite direction, very near Malin Head. Others mentioned a vet in Letterkenny, again in the wrong direction. But I'm sure there's vets everywhere, I wouldn't think you'd have a problem.

Yep I used Letterkenny vets though the only appointment they had was at their other office at Milford which wasn't a problem. lizibit it'll be cheaper to get the euro passport in the republic for sure otherwise youll need to get AHC for france.

Just a thought though, ring them first and see if they will accept the Ukrainian passport, they did mine off the old UK/EU one but usually if you don't have that you may still need an AHC :-(

The AHC we got from our Vet is only 9 pages of pre print forms which apart from repetitive information re dogs chips, our details and Vets, the pages are just stamped and signed. Pages 10 & 11 are photo copies of information from their pet passports which they stamp and sign. Can’t imagine it took too long. Vets who charge extortionate prices are just ripping their clients off.

Thanks - I'll see if I can get an appointment in time. If we decide to head the other direction I might give you a shout.

Now that vets are beginning to announce their charges for issuing Animal Health Certificates, I thought it would be interesting to start doing a little online research. Most vets’ websites I’ve found are remarkably coy about what they intend to charge for an AHC, even those vets who happily list their prices for a range of other services.

Two vets whose websites do include prices for AHCs are worth commenting on:

1. Mansion Hill Vets, nr Banbury

They reckon that it will take them 45 minutes to complete an AHC, for which their charge is £124.

https://www.mansionhillvets.co.uk/2020/12/16/travel-to-the-eu-after-brexit/

2. St Anne’s Veterinary Group, Eastbourne

Hold the record so far for most expensive AHC at £136.06 for the first animal plus £91.43 for each subsequent animal on the same AHC.

https://stannesvets.co.uk/current-pricelist.html

In various other threads, a couple of Funsters have mentioned what their local vets propose to charge:

Jaws in Norfolk £50

weekenders in Leicestershire £54

Can I ask for the names and addresses (or websites) of these vets, please.

If anyone else has details of or links to other vets with known charges for AHCs, please post them in this thread. It could become a useful resource for many pet owners. Thank you. (y)
Sadly, I can beat the St Anne’s price: Wangford Veterinary, Suffolk £160 not including the rabies jab (another £51.50).

So what would a non extortionate fee for an AHC be?
Both my dogs are Spanish rescues, with EU Passports :giggle:, but if I needed AHC's, I'd use either Abbeywell or Passpets, both of whom have a reputation for efficiency and accuracy, at the cost of £99 for the first animal and £35 for additional pets on the same certificate. I would regard this to be 'a non extortionate fee.' (y)

Thanks PaulC70 - will try a few in the morning and see what they say. The Ukrainian element might be enough to tip them over the edge!

Is this for a yearly AHC or does it need one for every visit?

With 2 dogs it could be expensive time you also pay the £40 per pet charge on the tunnel!!
We had two dogs, we where quoted £150 for both, But we lost lola on boxing day very time , vet do a great job but pets are becoming a luxury.

Our vets don’t do them so will have to shop around.

We paid £100 for an AHC at Staveley Vets near Chesterfield just before Christmas. Tried for an EU pet passport in Austria but they said only for Austrian residents.

What a bargain. I decided to wait until our trip in April so will get an AHC then a French passport. Our pup just got her rabies jab in Sept so don't want her to get another too quickly

Will give them try , not far from us , thanks.👍👍👍👍👍

I got quoted 4 different prices last Aug. One from my own vet ( £280). The second from the vet my daughter uses, ( £240). The third was ( £160 ), that was from vets4pets, was told they couldn't do it, but said to try one of there other branches, which I did.
Was very happy with there price of £80, 👍.

They were very efficient, they made 2 appointments, one in the morning to do a microchip scan and the health check and one in the evening to pick up the certificate. We didn’t have any issues with the certificate on the journey and will definitely use them again (y)

Excellent, my wife has them on Facebook and loves the pics they post. Thanks

Sorry if this info had been written before, just might be helpful
Animalhealthcertificate .on line. Animal health certificates bases in Folkestone. fill in forms on line they review them and ring you back to check and get payment {£99.] Taks 5/7 days to prepare

When I was in Spain in November 2021 I went in to a vet with the intention of getting an EU passport but when I checked the rules from 1st Jan 2021 if you are resident in the UK the EU pet passports are no longer valid due to Brexit.😗

That is correct for a UK issued EU pet passport.
Not EU issued pet passports
