Actual vet charges for Animal Health Certificates across UK

www.animalhealthcertificate.online is the online AHC branch of Abbeywell Vets in Folkestone, £98 for 1st dog & £25 for additional dogs, very efficient & organised, follow the procedure on the above website, email copies of documents, they then ring you to confirm all good, take payment & arrange collection of AHC. Can collect Mon to Fri between 10 & 6, they have done lots of AHCs & are very convenient if you are catching the Tunnel. Parking across the road. Can recommend
Thank you very much Oscar! Will definetely have a look with them as we will be using the Eurotunnel and sounds perfect.

When I was planning a trip in September, I contacted three local (Leicester) vets. My own quoted 250, another 220 (but "ahem" had no appointments at all for the foreseeable future. Vets for Pets quoted 165, but after ringing them today, for travel in November, they also advised no appointments. Coincidentally, after they'd checked if I was registered with them 🤔.

Seems the doors, locally at least, are starting to close on AHCs. I'm now looking to try the "remote approach" as above, but confess to being nervous about not having it in my hand when I set off! If all goes well though, I'll be returning from Belgium with an EU pet passport in my sweaty paw...

I doubt any owners will travel miles out of their area to save a few quid at a cheaper vet.
Out of my area is the reason I have the motorhome. Being a cheapskate, I travelled miles via Larne to ROI, and paid for a European Pet Passport, so no AHC required for the next ten years.

Is an AHC required now? (post 1st October?)

As far as I'm aware, nothing has changed re AHCs. And I normally go across the channel twice a year. Assuming Fido lasts another 10 years, that's £5,000 I'd be paying to my vet for filling out the same details in the same form each time. So perfectly happy to go all the way to Belgium to pay €60 for a pet passport that will last as long as Fido. And neck a few 🍺 as well....

That depends on the question. An AHC is required to get any pet into the EU if it doesn't have a Pet Passport. Except if you go to NI (no AHC required) then cross the border (no AHC required).

To get a Pet Passport when in the EU, you need either an old Pet Passport (which I had) or an AHC, with the chip ID on it.

Once you have a Pet Passport, no AHC is required to enter the EU.

From what we've read, AHCs wernt expected to be checked until at least 1st October when travelling from the UK to NI. Just wondering if, now it's 1st October, this was still the case?

Checks suspended indefinitely - whatever that means.

For the benefit of Leicestershire folk, the Loughborough vets below have quoted me £120, which for the security of having the AHC in my hand before setting off, I prefer to the Folkestone option

Just had a shuftie at the Folkestone vet website http://www.animalhealthcertificate.online/ and they've put their prices up a bit ... don't panic it's not much though!

Was £98 for first pet, now £99
Was £25 for additional pet, now £30

So for our 3 mutts it's gonna be £159 ... cheaper than elsewhere but still a lot of money for something that should cost a fraction of that.

Minxy Girl - we can recommend the Folkestone vets - very organised & efficient, also if there was a problem at the Pet check in at Eurotunnel Folkestone, they're only 10 minutes away. We will certainly use them again on our next trip, hopefully going to Portugal to get an EU pet passport.

Yes that's our intention rather than the 'rip off' merchant other vets, the good reviews on here have certainly given me confidence that they'll be able to do it with minimal fuss.

Hi and welcome to the Fun!
:welcome3:
There are a few vets around who have developed a relatively cheap streamlined process to get an AHC, notably PassPets near Havant and Abbeywell Vets at Folkestone. They are well placed for ferry or tunnel crossings.

A number of us have already obtained EU pet passports for our dogs, and others are planning to do so in the near future.

Hello,
I'm based in Essex, Harold Wood and unfortunately all of the vets around my area are all charging £200+ for one pet AHC. any idea of what is around Essex or close by that could help me reduce that? PassPets sadly seems to be too far to go to get one.

Thought I had posted on this thread already sorry if I have

Both my dogs have European PPs but one in January had his rabies booster done by a UK vet which later I found out voided his PP

Had a AHC for him Sept cost was £135 by our local vet for our travel to Portugal who advised me to get another vaccination so it would revert his pp back to being EU ..he assured me that it was safe to do so

Arrived at Eurotunnel Pet check in which the passport checked and had no mention of him needing the certificate

Have since been to a Portuguese vet and sorted ….3 yrs vaccination given , passport signed
nails clipped and checked over total ….28 € ….consultation fee 2€ total 30€

ps UK rabies sticker was the identical make sticker used in EU previously so did the check in desk not notice that it was a UK vet who administered it lol

Kath xx

May I ask where you were issued your pet passport? I thought you had to be resident in the country of issue but I'm happy to travel to Ireland/ France/ Belgium to get one.

Hi and welcome

There are at leadt 3 specific threads on this with loads of information which would be best to read up on to see what suits your requirements.

Hi and welcome to the Fun! :welcome3:

There is no EU-wide requirement to be an EU resident in order to obtain a pet passport. However some countries (notably France, but also possibly Belgium) are beginning to make things difficult for Brits by tying in the issuing of pet passports with registration of the dog on the country’s own ID register. If you have a free choice of country to travel to, then Ireland will almost certainly be the easiest of the three to obtain a pet passport in.

Our Spanish address on the EU passport is Plot 73, Camping Raco, Benidorm!

Following this with interest as its something we are looking into .
We have 2 cockers and currently leeve them with dog sitters, however , their prices have just gone up and we can only go away when they are free to take the dogs.

Don't know if it's been mentioned before but Abbeywell Vets in Folkstone charge £99 for the first dog's AHC and I think around £35 for the second. Eurotunnel say they never have problems with the AHCs which are completed by Abbeywell.

Hi check with Paul Jarman first but I think he is charging something like £125 too, lovely vet don’t know what he charges for dog two as we postponed our trip due to the border closure between us and france. As soon as we are able to go I will be getting Paul to sort the girls, he’s a good man as he was the one who told us as soon as you get to Spain get the girls an EU passport, then you won’t have to do this every time.

on arrival in Spain we got them Spanish passports so won’t need health certificate again
