Actual vet charges for Animal Health Certificates across UK

I've just done the AHC ring around.
Prices vary from 150 to 290. That didn't include rabies vaccination if needed and some would only do if already registered.
Luckily the one quoted 150 will do it for me even though I'm not registered.
My vet wanted 200, up from a quoted 125 in June.
Am I correct in thinking that if you get an EU PP whilst across the water, all future rabies vaccinations need to be done in the EU ?
If so, is it possible to request the three year vaccination, rather than the one year, does anybody know ?

Yes, all future rabies boosters need to be given in the EU.

You can certainly get 3-year boosters (I did) but you need to ask individual vets. It can also vary from country to country - Spain is more likely to give only an annual booster. France does both, so you have to check first.

OK. Update on PP. In answer to some of your Questions; I am getting AHC because I am entering the EU when going to Southern Ireland in case I get stopped for any reason to be on safe side. this will be of no interest to the vet I assume. I will need the dogs vaccination record up to date with rabies on there. My dog is 1 year old, so no old PP. I am starting this one from scratch. I asked if they will transfer rabies to PP and the girl on reception was not sure but no mention of booster, she told me what to bring and said that will be fine. (I am guessing she is not a vet) They also said they are doing "loads" of PP's for the Brits. The cost is 20eur for PP+30eur for Appointment, so total cost 50eur. so it looks good so far. My ferry is on the 2.Sept and I have booked Appointment for Mon 6th so can have a look around NI before we get to vets. Plenty of time and then on to do some of the south before ferry return from Belfast on 30th Sept. Hope this helps, I will feel a lot better once this fiasco is over. Bruce.
PP I suppose the cost of the entire thing will be high but if you factor in that I have never been to Ireland, Always in EU normally it has given me the excuse to go. Bruce.
I have a second house just over the border in Donegal and the Carn vet is our nearest vet. I have family in Carndonagh. There are no checks and no actual border at Derry /Londonderry. There would be outrage believe me if there were checks on dogs entering or leaving the Republic into the North and visa versa. Could you not just travel to Ireland and have a pet passport and rabies issued at the vet in Carn thereby saving you the cost of the AHC. There will be no need to have the rabies done here but you can have it done In Ireland.

Hi
strictly speaking you need Tapeworm treatment before entering RoI.
tk
\according to the govt. website we need a lot of things to go to NI but that was before they decided the NI protocol was completely unworkable.
apparently they thought putting a border in the Irish sea was a good Idea. You vote for a clown and you get a circus!! All that info is still on the Gov website, I think they don't know what to say!! Bruce

Can anyone tell me which part of the West Coast route is not suitable for bigger vans. Mine is 8.3mtrs. Is it worse than the Ballach Na Bah pass to applecross in Scotland. I did that in May with no trouble although my wife did dive in the back of the van for some reason!! But she did that on a French balcony road as well. Bruce

You don't need an AHC on the Cairnryan to Belfast route. These have been suspended until October along with other checks. Thedriver so don't waste money on the AHC.
Sonja
Hi Sonja, Thank you so much for your wise advice. I did notice you have already suggested this to me once before so thank you for your persistence, some people never listen do they!!. you are of course right that with the open border across to the south there should be very little chance of anyone stopping me let alone having the time or interest whether or not I am in possession of an AHC or not, and as I said in my previous post, the EU vet is not interested in a outgoing AHC. It will be interesting, though, to see how the EU vets react to people returning to the UK with the AHC's when they visit to have the tapeworm treatment done! Will they have the same attitude that the UK vets are displaying here when issuing them!!??
Thank you again and all I have to do is convince my cautious wife and I will cancel my appointment with the vet in Thetford. Regards Bruce

We would like to get our dog a 3 year pet passport issued in Ireland but would prefer to have his rabies info transferred from his UK passport as he only had his last booster 11 months ago. I've emailed 5 Vets in NI, only 1 responded who said they could only issue PPs to residents of NI. I've messaged Carn Vets through their FB page regarding getting a PP from them but have not, as yet, had a response.

Oscar, You can't get an EU PP in Northern Ireland. They, like Gibralter have a land border with the EU so the have pt1 listing so keep the UK-EU pet passport. We lost the PP because GB got pt2 listing as a third country. Southern Ireland is in the EU. That is why I thought it better to have a AHC to go from North to South Ireland. I think Carn vets will transfer Rabies vax record from Kizzy's Inoculation record card although they cant use the stickers that comes with the Vax when it was done in Dec last year they will copy it over and sign it,In your case they will copy itover from your old PP. So I will carry the Vax card for anyone that want's to check it and you should carry your old PP with your new EU one I hope that explains things to you. If anyone want's to correct me I will welcome your comments. Bruce

Hi, I live in SW France. Ive come here to share. So anyone thinking of getting an EU passport for their animal might want to read this. Last week I went to see my vet here, (i foster animals so we're almost on each others Christmas card list)... He told me that a lady that moved here last December, came in for an EU passport for her dog, he sent the paperwork away for her, (presumably after issuing the passport although he didn't say that bit to me) but the veterinary association/ministry who are responsible for the OK have put a 6 month stop on the passport while this lady proves she lives here, they want to see his treatment history for her dog as evidence that the animal lives here, they want it iCad registered to her french address, and want to see proof of her permanent address... Beware...

IMPORTANT INFORMATION. I have just phoned CARN VETS in Southern Ireland. I have conformation from them that we need an AHC to get a new EU PP also they have confirmed that they will transfer rabies details from, in my case Kizzy's vax record card or your old PP. That seems to clear up a lot of speculation. Good luck Bruce. If anyone want's to copy this to other posts could you please do that for me cos I don't know how!! DOOOH
Bruce Just seen the post above. Thats interesting/worrying???

I believe that is a French thing on the spiteful direction of Macron who wants to make life as difficult as possible for UK residents.
Happy to be corrected if I'm wrong.

Thanks for that, John - duly bookmarked. (y)
Just been notified of a change of policy from them.
They now charge £110 :-(

Still MUCH better than the old vets we used,, who now want £180 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yes, I saw that Bruce had posted further up this thread that Jarman had put their prices up. I doubt if any of the vets in the ‘Good Guys’ thread are holding to their original prices. :(

I'm surprised but at least you know now. I probably won't get over before October but if I do I can use my Irish address and won't need an AHC as I have an Irish passport and the equivalent of an Irish NI number. My family are sheep and pig farmers in Carndonagh so probably use this vet a lot. Let me know how you get on.

I can’t really understand this.

Ive got a French EU passport for my dog recently. So at what point is it “stopped” ?

Ive already got it and at no point does anyone do anything other than record info in the book that I have. No one checks it, they check the info in it.

Small world, don't you think!! Bruce

Copied from AHC Facebook page.

We’ve just tried to get a French Pet Passport and been told that the vets have been informed today that the dog needs to have been in France for 3 months before they can issue a Passport. They are using the entry date stamp on the AHC as proof of how long the dog has been in country. This was at the vets in Neuf-chatel that have previously issued passports without any problems.
Looks like the French bureaucracy has caught up.

Yes, there’s all sorts of contradictory info on that group page at the moment. Some who have just obtained pet passports at French vets, some who have been denied.

Maybe some read the directives, look at the fees, give a Gaelic shrug and issue the PP ?
While others comply.

Have they confirmed cost of eu PP ?
Hi Figaro, I did ask the vets for the cost but I have forgotten the amount now. They were quoting 20eur a while ago but I think because they are doing so many for us suckers, after seeing what we are having to go through with all this, they have put the price up. I think they told me about 50 or 60eur including "consultation fee". It looks like they have been on the Tinternet to find out what we are being charged by vets over here and saying "I, al Hay some o that". But how much would a PP be in this country if they were allowed to do them!! The next thing they will charging a consultation fee in France!!
Bruce.

Just try a few vets. Eventually you will find a more “French” one who just writes out a new PP for you.

We got ours for 11€ and the chap had little to no idea about the uk PP not working any more, so explained it to him and he just issued us new PP.

Andy, could you write up the details in the ‘European Vets that have issued EU Pet Passports to Brits since Brexit’ thread in the ‘Pets’ forum, please. That way other Funsters will stand a better chance of finding a helpful vet. Thank you.

European Vets that have issued Pet Passports

white cross in Middlesbrough want 200 for first and 120 for 2nd i think i'm going to change vet

I just called to 10 different vets in the Essex and Kent area. Prices ranged from 200 to 260!!!!

It feels like a robbery to be honest, but it leaves us with not many options. It seems like it's all about taking advantage of the situation and taking as much money as possible from customers unfortunately.

Deepest sympathy, I am just so glad that I have bought a home here in Spain and my dogs now have EU passports.

Looks like a trip to Northern Ireland is on the cards for us so we can go without having to mess about with an AHC and get PPs whilst there for our 3 as the cost for our MH on the ferry (return) will likely be less than getting an AHC done here.

www.animalhealthcertificate.online is the online AHC branch of Abbeywell Vets in Folkestone, £98 for 1st dog & £25 for additional dogs, very efficient & organised, follow the procedure on the above website, email copies of documents, they then ring you to confirm all good, take payment & arrange collection of AHC. Can collect Mon to Fri between 10 & 6, they have done lots of AHCs & are very convenient if you are catching the Tunnel. Parking across the road. Can recommend
