Actual vet charges for Animal Health Certificates across UK

When I was in Spain in November 2021 I went in to a vet with the intention of getting an EU passport but when I checked the rules from 1st Jan 2021 if you are resident in the UK the EU pet passports are no longer valid due to Brexit.😗
You could have got an eu passport. Many on here including me have done.

I am getting an AHC for my dog, but have a 6 month trip in EU (have Irish passport) and it is only valid for 4 months. Def planning to get her a French passport when away as would otherwise be a right headache. Some vets are being difficult about issuing one to non-residents but hopefully find one to do it through family

This is what I was going on..

Hi and welcome to the Fun!

Many of us on here have obtained EU Pet Passports and use them with no problems.

’That paragraph’ is unfortunately badly worded and doesn’t actually make sense in terms of EU law. It should refer to UK-issued pet passports, which as we know became invalid from 1 Jan 2021. Otherwise there is nothing on that page that mentions this important fact. It is also unfortunate that it appears on the European Commission website which should be expected to be more precise in its wording. There also appear to be a few nonsensical replies emanating from that website if you ask for clarification on the matter.

There is no legal requirement to be an EU resident in order to obtain and use an EU pet passport. I have put together a separate post that explains this in some detail:

Why you do not need to be an EU resident to obtain an EU Pet Passport

🙂 I can see Holbeach getting a lot more Motorhome traffic now - fair play to her, but slightly bizarre that we've now got to the point where £100 to fill in a form seems like a bargain!
Okay for 1 dog but still expensive at £50 for each additional one.

Annual visit to the vet today and asked about paperwork for Europe, £250 - without a hint of embarrassment - as it was an hour's work although he did mention getting a passport in Europe. Also wanted the exact date the dog's chip was implanted (it's a rescue dog and has an old Euro passport). Plan B has been instigated.

That £50 for each additional dog is the same as PassPets at Havant but Abbeywell at Folkestone only charge £30.

When you have 3 dogs the extra cost soon adds up ... we're going to Abbeywell for that and also because of the fact that if there are issues we can easily pop back to them to get them sorted out.

We just paid £165 at vets for pets Loughborough for our trip next week
the vet told me be best to get a new passport for the dog while we over in Spain.
I did get a passport for my dog in France but I had to have an address in France and all paperwork is sent there. I would check that .

I also got a French passport, and no address was required The only “paperwork” is the passport, which the vet handed to us after he had filled it in.

We did the same last year and are going over in June with the new French pet passport for the first time

Question is has anyone used their newly acquired EU pet passport to go back to the EU yet? As there are no threads I assume all is working fine.

Have tried using it yet?

Used our French issued PP, without French address or ICAD registration (as far as I know) probably 6 holidays since issue and also got rabies booster added to it about three weeks ago. No issues at all. Even the PP check in staff member reminded us to get the booster done, and “make sure not in the uk“ last time we went out.

I did the same. I acquired one last September but have not used it yet.
We are going next week so just hoping it all goes smoothly. We had to have all paperwork sent to our French address as the VET said thats how its done?
I am rather concerned about it as its not very clear.

If you look through some of the other threads on here, you will find there are many of us that have obtained and used EU pet passports without problem, myself included.

As were booked on the tunnel two weeks on Monday and it was a wet Sunday morning we filled in the Abbeywell vets application for an AHC.Sent at 9.40,recieved an email 10 hours later, application accepted and it'll be ready for collection,+the payment details £99 Can't get better service than that👍

Next job is to book an appointment with Dr Jaucot near Mons for a passport 👍

Abbeywell are very efficient. Saved us £100 to spend on other more fun things! Appointment at a vet in France tomorrow to see about a passport, but should be straightforward as can use my in-law's address if required

Thanks for the Abbeywell suggestion. We are in Hythe and our own vet doesn't have anyone that can do the AHC only the rabies jab.

Phoning vets around the Teesside area, the general price seems to be £250 for an AHC. One vet reduced the fee to £180 if the dog was registered with them but one vet also wanted to charge an additional £50 registration fee (as our dog wasn't registered with them) and a £42 consultation fee - total £342!

There seems to be a shortage of vets that might be exacerbating the problem. One practice I spoke to had three vets leaving this month.

Making me sick reading this. I paid £250 at First Vets in Newcastle

This won’t help your sick feeling, but it might help for your next trip: I paid £130 for an AHC at Vets4Pets in Durham this week.

We paid £175 for our dog. When in France earlier in month we went to our friends vet and he stated it would take around 2 weeks to register our dog at our friends as her microchip has to now go on French database. He completed the paperwork and we will return in September where he has to physically see her and issue the passport and will give her a rabies booster which is due in October. It’s €35 euro for passport but again to get back out there it’s another AHC

The vet that we use wants £198 for a AHC she's taking the piss.
