Actual vet charges for Animal Health Certificates across UK

I have just taken my dog to her vets with an ear problem. Whilst there I asked how much for an AHC and she said they didn’t do them as the vet has not got the necessary qualification?!?

Think they mean that the vet has to be an OV (Official Veterinarian), like they would have had to be to issue a Pet Passport (in the good old days).

We’ve never done a worming treatment to enter the eu. We have to enter the uk, but not the eu
Not so, unless you are travelling directly to Finland, Norway, Malta or Republic of Ireland - plus the b*ll*cks that has been created between GB and Northern Ireland. These countries are known to be free of the Echinococcus multilocularis tapeworm (as indeed is GB, but no longer in the eyes of the EU), whereas the rest of Europe does have it. So no point in worming your dog against a tapeworm that doesn’t exist in the UK in order to enter an area that has it. It’s the other way round.
Sorry I was thinking of NI as that's where we were planning on going, not now though.

This certainly seems a fair reflection of the situation, matching exactly what our Vet disclosed to us today when we visited for our two dogs annual MOT. The vet was saying they have been under pressure from clients to produce sometimes several AHC's a day, mainly from people returning to Europe having lived in the UK plus a limited number of people going on holiday. The vet said each time it takes her around 45 minutes to pre-fill all the known information, then more time to check the animal properly, before completing the paperwork, signing the declarations, etc. She estimates total time required for our 2 dogs will be a 90 minute appointment, plus her pre-admin, and quoted £250 total for the two dogs.

She was very clear that once borders open up with more freedom of travel they simply will be unable to cope with demand and still deliver the normal range of services. Her prediction is that either the Government will resolve the problem by getting EU agreement to go back to Pet Passports or specialist businesses will end up setting up purely to handle the demand on the vet industry to produce AHC's. A problem looming for 2022 I suspect.

Interesting to hear there's high demand. Where my ear was to the ground it was only a few enquiries a month. But that was a little while ago, holiday season is upon us!

Wow that's crazy prices.. if you can even get a vet to do it. So thankfull we were away when all this kicked off and got a Portuguese passport.

I was thinking of going to NI for a passport (I understand an AHC is now not required for NI entry until at least end of October this year).

However, with the UK now wanting to redraw the NI Protocol, I fear that an NI passport may become invalid for EU entry if further new 'terms & conditions' are negotiated.

Q: Would it be possible to enter via NI and then drive to Ireland to obtain an EU passport?

As there are no internal borders there doesn't appear to be anything to stop yo doing so.

The vets around us in Faversham Kent have all raised their prices for an AHC to between £230 to £280 for two dogs on one certificate. We checked earlier in the year and was quoted around £150.
I understand its a 8 page document which can take an hour to complete but £280 per hour seems excessive.
Has anyone has a reasonable charge for this largely paperwork certificate from a Vet in the south east?

We have an appointment with Warsash Vets on 31st August and the charge is £90.

Reboot
There looks to be a vast difference in prices throughout the country, I rang Vet4pets at Durhan a couple of weeks ago and was quoted £80.
Imo some quotes like yours are saying go elsewhere we don't want the work.

Vets4pets in Canterbury have just quoted me £280 so it's starting to look like the Vets in Kent are hiking the prices up.

This was my quote this week.

To Richard,

The cost all in would be £325

£250 for the AHC and £75 for the rabies vaccination.

We hope this clears things up for you.

Many thanks

St James reception team

Looks like the Vets are realising this AHC is going to be a one hit charge as most of us regular European tourers are going to get EU passports once we get them across the channel so they are now making Hay.

If you pets rabies vaccination is still valid then wait until you are in Europe and get an EU pet passport. When we returned to the uk this spring we obtained an EU pet passport, including rabies vaccine and worming, for about €48
With an EU pet passport you can forget all this nonsense of AHCs.

You don't need an AHC on the Cairnryan to Belfast route. These have been suspended until October along with other checks. Thedriver so don't waste money on the AHC.

My story is the same, was quoted different prices between £250 and £160.
Vets4pets Bishop Auckland £160, but I was told they were too busy, so tried Vets4pets Durham and got a price of £80.you just have to shop around.
All booked in for next week.👍

Will the Vet not need the AHC in order to issue a pet passport? Would be great if they didn't 🤞

If you didn't have the AHC would you need to return to the UK before the end of September?

Will this Vet transfer current rabies boosters onto the new pet passport? Thanks

All you should need is proof of rabies vaccine. If that's on an old UK pets passport (and rabies vacc is in date) you should be OK. Can you ask the vet who'll be doing the EU pets passport what they require in that regard?

I suppose technically the dog would be entering Irish republic illegally without an AHC currently, even though the GB to NI journey doesn't need one. But I don't truly know the Irish rules and whether this would trouble the Irish vet or not. I suppose it possible to envisage where a GB dog entered Ireland prior to 31/12/2020 on a (then) valid UK pets passport and had stayed there ever since.

OK. Update on PP. In answer to some of your Questions; I am getting AHC because I am entering the EU when going to Southern Ireland in case I get stopped for any reason to be on safe side. this will be of no interest to the vet I assume. I will need the dogs vaccination record up to date with rabies on there. My dog is 1 year old, so no old PP. I am starting this one from scratch. I asked if they will transfer rabies to PP and the girl on reception was not sure but no mention of booster, she told me what to bring and said that will be fine. (I am guessing she is not a vet) They also said they are doing "loads" of PP's for the Brits. The cost is 20eur for PP+30eur for Appointment, so total cost 50eur. so it looks good so far. My ferry is on the 2.Sept and I have booked Appointment for Mon 6th so can have a look around NI before we get to vets. Plenty of time and then on to do some of the south before ferry return from Belfast on 30th Sept. Hope this helps, I will feel a lot better once this fiasco is over. Bruce.
PP I suppose the cost of the entire thing will be high but if you factor in that I have never been to Ireland, Always in EU normally it has given me the excuse to go. Bruce.

AHC is valid for 4 months but I could come back on new EU PP. But I am returning from N Ireland so no checks until 1st Oct. My ferry is on 30th Sept. Bruce Check my post506
