A photo of your van camping last night

You seem a bit paranoid, why do you think that people want to know where you are? The Government know exactly where you are all the time unless you switch off your phone. Is someone after you? What did you do? 😂
Do you not think criminals watch these sort of forums for vans they’d like to steal? If you or someone else constantly tells everyone where a particular van is it’s gonna go missing sooner or later. I don’t want that to be my van!
Motorhomes are regularly stolen to order so if they see one they want they’ll know exactly where it is!
So, I’ll go back to posting pictures AFTER I’ve left then. And just to annoy the wingers I’ll NOT put where it is! (y)

Well it won't be where it is but where it was!

I know you feel upset because most people on this thread do not see the dangers that you do. But I started this thread, and the whole point of it was to discover lovely places to stay, so there really isn’t any point posting an image without the location.

Also, even though you’re upset, I think that it is rude to insult those of us (many of us) who clearly find value in that, by calling us whingers - implying we have no valid point to make and are merely carping at you.

So please do post the location - what’s the harm, if you’ve left it? And if you think that bad people are tracking your location and predicting your next stop to steal your van, then I respectfully suggest that this is not the thread for you.

Nicely put.

Well done for spelling whingers correctly :ROFLMAO: Hope the trip is going well.

I really don’t care if others don’t see the danger of posting where they are / have been. If their vans get stolen / damaged etc that’s their problem not mine. The jump in insurance premiums is though. It doesn’t take a genius to plot the last few positions of ANY persons van stopovers and therefore easily predict where they’re likely to be in the next few days. More unlikely abroad yes, but I certainly don’t want my van targeted over here because I or someone else has posted where I am. If it’s a problem with me not saying where I am then fine, I’ll stop posting pictures. It really doesn’t bother me in the slightest. (y)
I certainly don’t think it’s rude to highlight the fact that I DONT want my location given away. Again, if others do then that’s fine.

But when your away people can get your address from your number plate and break into your house😳😳I would be more concerned about that than someone possibly following me around ready to steal my van that bye the way would be near on impossible with the alarm and tracker on it🤔🤔🤔

Let's get the thread back on track.

If you are genuinely concerned about giving away your location, as opposed to simply being obstructive to forum members who politely ask where the photo was taken, I'd suggest you do as you say and don't post photos at all.

Reason being - I've not been to any of your last three locations, but it took less than 30 seconds for each to confirm their locations using Google reverse image search. Just saying .......

Wow I’ve not heard of that, how does it work. Sounds very clever.

I agree, I try to avoid showing my number plate. I don’t always remember.

Here's an example of a photo that I've recently taken.. Somewhere we overnighted a couple of months ago. I've made it a pretty hard test in that there are not too many distinguishing features.

To use Google Image Search (on an android phone) open up your Google Search Assistant. On my Pixel 7a I've set it up so that a long press on the round icon at the bottom of the screen brings it up. I can then search using my voice - Hey Google - What's today's weather, etc., or I can search using whatever image is on the screen, by drawing my finger around the relevant parts of the picture. Google will then try and identify what, whom or where is in the image, including links to relevant web sites (Notice that I've deliberately excluded the campervan as I didn't want info and links about Autotrail Expedition PVCs).

Scrolling down, within the the first half dozen matches was a photo that looked very similar, and a link to this website.

Location confirmed. Yes, it was taken at Årdalsvatnet in Norway where we overnighted on our recent trip to Scandinavia.

It can be quite a fun game! Do you want me to put a couple more photos up so you can give it a go?

I'm sure something similar is possible with Apple / Siri too.

You can also look in the EXIF data for a GPS location. It’s not always there, but most phones will add it.

Yes. Easy to do for pictures on your own phone, but it's generally stripped out when posting online to forums like MHF.

For the picture I posted earlier, here's the exif data including a handy location map based on the GPS position. Not available once posted on MHF though.

Here’s my guesses.
1. Pido looking Fuente De.
2. Konstanz.
3. Helgeland Bridge, Norway.

You are right, it is very quick and easy.

I’m not sure but I have the reg number so heading to your house 😂😂😂
Excellent. While you're there, do you mind putting the heating on to warm the place up - as we arrive back on Wednesday after 3 months away! 😀

Ps. Luckily, the house isn't unoccupied while we're away - we have family members living there. Makes complying with the House Insurance T&C's easier too.

Another thought comes to mind with this thread and locations.

I think if we could have a map attached to the thread that when we put a photo up, we can have the option to mark it on a map.
I m thinking specifically about Jane And Rog and Barti Ddu whose last couple of trips (and current ones) are marked up in my memory cells.
I dont know how Jim could do this but along the lines of the journals and the map on there creating a searchable map.
It would certainly help with my planning of my holidays as atm I just have to go back through the appropriate threads and transfer them onto my own map and I can ignore the one stop on their trips that just doesnt have the wow factor that the other 50/60 stops have.

Some might say it might be trying to replace the apps but I would see it as an added feature of MHF, and if Jim is able to do it (we have photo of the day thread and photo of outside from inside) we could do the same on those (but only have one map with different coloured icons for which thread it came from)

I sometimes have significant amount of downtime at work would work through previous postings to add them on to the map (if created) over the course of time (which may be significant)

Any thoughts, and sorry for the hijack of the hijack

I think that’s a really good idea. Let’s hope Jim agrees.
