What have you fixed on your motorhome this week?

After fixing everything, except the aircon which is being fixed in three weeks, after which I dare say all the rain we’re desperately short of will come at once, I’m now halfway home from a long weekend away and wondering why the front of the van is covered in oil streaks. Checking the dip stick shows I have oil where it should be, and I don’t have a warning light up. So so think I can get home on the vans own wheels rather than a set belonging to a recovery truck…. So, no fix today, but hopefully at least an identification of where it’s coming from before the Newbury Retro Fest at the end of the week.
What’s the news with your van is it OK?

It’s been an expensive 10 days for the van, had it remapped £250, 2 new tyres £240, full service £331 all to ensure a trouble free and more economical expedition to the Shetlands, also I’ve been going around the inside of van locating and fixing rattles.
In addition it’s booked into a workshop in Aberdeen to get a new mixer tap and water filter fitted when we get back off ferry.

Not sure. The oil levels are all fine and no indication anywhere else of it loosing oil. I spoke to the chaps who look after it and they've said worst case it might be an intercooler split (although they think it's not that likely, as I'm not hearing the whistle/whoosh typical of intercooler failures and the van's not losing power). I'm taking it to the Retro Fest this w/e which isn't a long haul journey from home, and will keep an eye on the oil levels. It's then going to the garage for a couple of checks. Hopefully the issue will be minor.
Thanks for asking.

Replaced a broken alarm Reed switch on the hab door. Couldn't get an exact replacement so had to drill a new hole for one of the fixing screws.
Fitted my outside/inside thermometer with radio controlled clock. The outside sensor is in the gas locker next to the mesh drop vent so definitely in the shade.
Also put on a couple of new decals to make it more recognisable.

The quote is from the Lord of the Rings of course.

An update on my van. A visit to the workshop yesterday confirmed that it doesn't have an oil leak. Which is as I suspected as there's no drop on the dip stick checks and no signs underneath the van. (Although quite a bit could collect on the engine tray before being noticed under than van.)
The 'oil' on the front is actually cavity wax which has been melting and running down from the new bonnet. The garage has apparently seen the same thing though not in the same places from another vehicle this week. Due to the recent fit of the new bonnet with good levels of wax and grease at the installation, and the very high temperatures recently.
Only issue now is that the wax deposits are hard to clean off of my newly resprayed bumpers without risking damaging or flatting the new paint.

The A/C compressor potential issue is another hiccup altogether, but I've left it for the time being as further investigations will involve taking off the front and the associated costs etc.

Carefully removed the mucky and sun deteriorated sealant seam between the upper section and lower section of the external cab area (Hymer convertors from Fiat chassis/coach) with a sharp wood chisel and sand paper, cleaned up with meths and resealed with Sikoflex. Finished with a 12 mm flexible hose pipe end, looks much better that the original IMHO😳.

Fitted an Avtex 21.5” TV. I’ll give it a try on our next trip for sound quality and decide whether to also fit our Bose soundbar. There’s not much space in the Lyseo 590’s TV space so I’m hoping I don’t need it. Burstner have the ‘normal’ cigarette lighter style 12v socket in the cab but a Hella socket where the TV mount is so an adapter was needed.

Shower tray was leaking........ Removed the sealant yesterday and I could instantly see why it was leaking..... A gap combined with minimal sealant

That was taken before finishing the cleanup

Applied a bead of sealant yesterday and then masked off and applied a second bead today

That should fix the problem. Not the best job in the world but OK - not a lot of room in which to work

Step trim into toilet now secured by clearing out the gap between the step upright and the toilet floor panel, squeezing PVA in, and adding 6 paving slabs to weigh it down until cured. lovely now.
Tried to fit replacement Caprice MkIII glass, but the new one is narrower than the original. Grrr.

I fixed about half a dozen Command wire hooks around the vehicle. One on the frame just behind each pilot seat to hold jackets, and elsewhere for other bits and bobs. They’re almost invisible but very useful.

New turbo, new throttle body, blanked EGR valve, smashed out the CAT from exhaust, new MAP sensor, remap so it doesn’t try to use the EGR. A fortune of gaskets, and additives. Now just an oil and filter change to do.

Spent many hours on restoration of that airframe, including dismantling at Leuchars and reassembling for 2018 Cosford air show
One for you then.

I loved the Phantom, sat in one at Greenham Common in 1973 I think it was.

Phantoms are awesome. Brutal things. Flown the F-4 simulator a few times and it was a bit of a challenge but really rewarding. Past the gate into full reheat……. 😊 got Mach 1.2 (simulated) - easier to fly than a Tonka. Was going to spend the weekend in Abingdon with the British Phantom aviation group but of course they cancelled due to the very sad events of today. We have two airframes waiting restoration in Kemble plus a knackered one in Manston. The cockpit section resides at Newark air museum and is a great visit on open cockpit days (cockpifest) with guided tours by real F-4 flight crew

I fixed the inside dirt from our three week trip to Croatia… made some replacement door mats form better ribbed carpet than I used last year when we got the van.

I fixed the wiring mess left by Weinsberg under the travel seat …which has been grating on me since we got the van a year ago. And dusted 😜

While it all works fine and is safe it was not neat …. And I am working my way though the van on these.

Well not fix in the proper sense but fitted a new double DIN radio/sat nav thingy as the old one was Android 8 and a bit slow to keep up, so this one is android 11 and a lot faster plus it came with a DAB box add on as we got fed up with FM radio dropping signal whilst out driving across country, it was a quick swap only had to fit DAB aerial down side of front windscreen and route cable into dash, installed the DAB app plus Sygic truck on it, has Google maps etc but you can put MH size in Sygic, had it on the old one
