Just starting out!
Off on a shopping trip for the MH later today. On the list is a water pipe; what sort of length should I go for?

On sites that have electric hook-up, do they generally have an adjacent water source?

Also, what about tap fittings? We will be based in the Netherlands but very close to Germany and Belgium. Our intention is to ‘do’ as much of Europe as we are able whilst we are here. Do we need a whole load of tap fittings for this?

Sorry but I need to hijack this thread (you might need to fetch more popcorn).
Log? You keep a log? Is this a usual thing to do? We keep one on the boat, obviously, but hadn’t thought to keep one for the MH. Good idea though
We keep a record or where we stop each night, but don't go into that sort of detail!

We, well Janet, keeps a log of our travels since March 2015 as we both tend to forget so much these days.

Is that why a number of modern motorhomes are fitted with Captain style chairs?
So you can keep a Captain's Log!
Oh dear, bye!:groan::getmecoat:

Check see if all the hoses and tanks in your motorhome use food grade plastic. Supermarkets had a big scare with the wrappings on meats several years ago so I don't think you have anything to worry about because the problems take many years to manifest itself by which time you will be dead and gone. As for drinking water well I really don't have time for these arguments about cleanliness. The advent of people getting ill because of under cooked food and tap water that is tainted really makes me chuckle. Survivalists have been eating and drinking things that would kill most softies but you are only soft if you haven't built up a resistance to bacteria. It's my speciality and believe me I have been using a 15 metre GARDENIA roll-up garden hose for the past 6 years and never had a problem. Just attach quick flush fill the tank and good to go. Never had a problem.

Hi, just to add my bit ,we bought a 10mtr food grade flat hose on a cassette (which doesn't lay flat completely when wound up on cassette ) which didn't quite reach the filler when at home so ended up buying a yoyo hose from B&Q it's the red one comes in two lengths 10mtr expanding to 15 and a 25mtr expanding to 30 or thereabouts and it's toxic free so ideal for m/h or caravan you get a spray gun and a tap connector in with it for about £25 might be worth a look.

Really I should wonder about the quote YET.

Cast your mind back to when houses had LEAD water pipes. I got rid of the last one in my house some 12 years ago. never noticed any difference. Told to not use standard solder but use lead free. Still living. I could go on and write a whole page concerning water pipes etc.
My initial post was use common sense, don't get worked up about a few germs, If traveling in a motorhome here or abroad why worry there is far more S--t in the air we breath that could potentially kill you than the water you drink. To many people get bent out of shape worrying about the inconsequential than living. Anyway who drinks water, Have you seen what fish do in it!

In fact reference the above I think I will have a single malt whiskey made with highland water. Their sheep P--S in the water but at 40% proof the germs are either dead or very drunk.o_O

that is a pointless argument..

it's not about germs, and shit in the air we can do little about .. or fish or sheep peeing in water

it's about carcinogenic chemicals leaching out of a garden hose into your fresh water storage tank

Citing other wrongs doesn't strengthen your case for using a garden hose...

I never understand these debates.. and they are on every forum.. pages and pages of argument trying to justify using a garden hose
when food grade hose for about £1 per meter.. garden hose about the same..

it's like someone advocating it's safer to walk on the road as you knew someone who was killed walking on the pavement ..

Very very true Jim I couldn't agree with you more, but pertinent was lead pipes causing lead poisoning and also the lead in solder doing the same but nothing is attributle to either. Regarding carcinogenic plastic hosepipes it has been shown reference food wrapped in plastic that the food has to be in contact over a long period of time at least 48 hours to have any effect. Leeching occurs over a period of time depending on the plastic and it's temperature. The speed at which the water goes through the pipe is inconsequential and would never be cause for concern. Worrying unnecessarily is more likely to kill you than just getting on with it. The reference to germs in the air we breath was to highlight that we seem to be worrying about something that will have no effect on us as something that will. That being the case why don't we all wear masks on our faces to alleviate the crap we breath in which is known to affect us all as against something which personally I don't worry about. Back to the Whiskey and lets put this into context please.

I did think of another thing to worry about in this debate. Has anybody questioned the source of supply. When I traveled to Spain in 2000 I was warned not to drink tap water but use bottled. Is this still the same? I can see this thread going far.

I bought food-grade hose. I also bought non-food-grade hose for grey water. I bought a zipped bag for the hoses which from new have lived there. And I bought a watering can and a grey water container. The hoses have never left the garage at home. Free to anyone willing to collect. The watering can got cleaned after 4 years as it was starting to go black inside. I dilute the water I drink with whisky. :D

I've given my reasons for food grade hose in earlier posts. It's not just the carcinogenic in the plastic that causes problems but the ability of non food grade to provide a home for bacteria. Reference the point about cleanliness try telling that to an African person suffering from Ebola or similar.
