Up plating

AFAIK it’s less cost for the RFL as a Private Heavy Goods vehicle £165 v £280.
Some breakdown and recovery policies may vary but using something like the Nationwide Flex account would include both in the scheme for no additional cost (up to 7.5 tonnes GVW).

Where do the restrictions on travel through smaller towns/villages come into play for a modest upgrade to sub 4tonne?
Thanks for pointing out that Nationwide Flex recovery is ok up to 7.5t as we have that & I hadn’t checked yet.
I recall that a lot of small towns in Europe do not allow you to drive through the centre above 3.5t which is a real downside for me & maybe others.

Are there any downsides of updating higher than 3500kg on insurance, road tax, recovery etc. I know one of the downsides is that you can’t travel through some smaller towns/ villages.
I was told cheaper road tax. more expensive Moho insurance And. more expensive recovery
the higher expense together outweighs any road tax savings.
Insurance - no difference
Road Tax - saves about £115 a year at present
Recovery - no difference to cost however some move you into a 'commercial' recovery group and you don't get as many benefits as 3500kg (eg less hotel etc cover).

Just about every French town or village is 3500kgs through them. (y)
Genuine question, is that 3500kgs for everything or is it 3500kg for goods vehicles (lorries, delivery vehicles and the like)?

Usually you see this sign…..

It’s an interesting one - and if the up plated U.K. registered MoHo was physically the same size as the sub 3500kg model (Class 2 Camping Car I believe?) would they even know?

Ah thank you that’s clear enough, but correct me if I’m wrong isn’t there a similar sign with a lorry on it which denotes It means >3.5t trucks not allowed?
That is often the case, it's usually there to stop them taking short-cuts through the villages.

Go VAN WEIGHT ENGINEERING, very easy to deal with and a VERY GOOD PRICE.

I phoned comfort before I started the process of uplating my van, all they said was let us know when its done so we can make a note, there will be no increase in insurance premium.

Still I have decided just to up plate to 3500 kg. It’s enough for us .

and for family use. Saves them having to mess about with adding the C1 to their driving licences.

being sorted now and should be all done except for the dvla in a week or so.

Ah, OK different system to mine, I opted for a non compressor system and monitor the pressure on a the tyre pressure monitoring system.
I terminated the top up schraders valves [ same as a tyre valve ] in the garage area.
Mike.
The small 12 volt inflation pump that comes with the kit also can inflate the tyres with no additional adaptor.
and pumps with ease 71 psi. More than required for my Moho tyres.
I have a 12 volt extension socket and can reach round to all the wheels.

little or no tank water saves approx. 88 kgs
IMO defeats the object of a Motorhome we would never set off without our 160 Lt tank full.

Insurance companies have never asked the weight, as said VED is a lot cheaper.
There are some French villages that are no entry over 3.5t but if you are going to the Aire no problem plus no one will bat an eyelid to a Motohome in a French village.

Just been onto the DVLA site to check the road tax status of my van as it tells you revenue weight and last time new log book issued, my revenue weight is now 4500 and last V5 change March 10 new log book must be in the post  Cant complain about that for service. First contact with SVTech February 18 papers and new weight sticker received back February 22, documents sent to DVLA February 23

Still leaves 20 ltrs of usable fresh water in the tank more than enough for a day to get somewhere.

Assuming where you go to has water ... wild-camping doesn't have the 'guarantee'.

Spare wheel was included and a toolbox full of tools and two axel stands. The heaviest single item apart from water and fuel is an awning. And two full gas bottles.
note I never mentioned a single word about eeerr in doors. :giggle:
Ditch the axle stands, sort the tools, 1 gas bottle, 3/4 of the water and change the awning to a fibreglass or air model and you have saved nearly 100kg.

That will save you at the pumps a 4 pack of beers too.

Got an air awning when on The weighbridge loaded except two small dogs and only one weeks shopping full of fuel and water driver and passenger 3400 kgs. So we’re up plating to 3500 kg
we we’re reluctant to go above this as it will stop relations from using the Moho when they want to. As none that I am aware of have the c1 on their licences.

and we don’t mind if they use it when they want to like they did the caravan when we had one so long as we’re not using it.

Hopefully ours will be as quick. Sent everything on the 5th March. Just checked vehicle details, still showing 3500.

So long as the paperwork is right there is no reason to assume it would take any longer, it looks like the DVLA have sorted themselves out.

We are currently looking to up plate. Been asked for a Certificate of Conformance. Looked through our paperwork but don’t have this. Is this something that we should have?

Depends on the year of your van they started issuing them around 2004, if 2007 or later you should have one. You can get copies from the manufacturer, some do it for free while others charge a couple of hundred quid.

Thanks Lenny. It’s a 2021. Will have another look through the paperwork. Frustrating if it’s not there.

Found a Manufacturers Declaration of Compliance NCC approved manufacturer but is this the same as a Certificate of Conformance? There’s no mention of weights or emissions on the DoC. Only the V5 has this info.

No, C of C is issued by manufacturers you should have two or three of them. Fair Al-Ko if you have an Al-Ko chassis & the Converters, the Converters is the important one.

Thanks again. I will be calling the dealer come Monday

Did the same as you through SV Tech.
Looked into Van weight Eng but would have had to take a day off work, 50 mile round trip, cost of Weigh-bridge so easier through SV Tech who’s office is 15mins from me.
