UK availability of LPG

From what I have read, most uk filling stations will phase out LPG by 2024. It’s already getting hard to find places that sell LPG particularly in Scotland. My van’s heating /hot water, hob and fridge are all gas fed by an underslung tank . We haven’t ever bothered with hook up as don’t need it.

If anyone is else is in this situation, what will you do? Are there alternatives that can use the tank? Or do I need to somehow move to bott

I understand what you mean about Scotland. There may be plenty around the central belt but somewhere as big as Inverness doesn't have one LPG pump & north of Inverness there are only 4 or 5 altogether & they are sometimes out of order. If you are staying in the highlands north of Inverness for any length of time it can be a pain as most of the LPG pumps are in the same area just above Inverness so you can fill up on the way up & back (if you return via Tore) but the only one north of there is on an industrial estate at Ullapool (we only learnt of this one recently as it's not on FillLPG but is on myLPG.eu) There used to be 2 in Fort William but they have both gone now & the Morrisons there doesn't have one. When we were in Aberdeen last year we struggled too as the ones that had pumps were out of order.

Out of interest I checked on mylpg.eu for lpg outlets around our area, Katowice, Poland, and there are 123.

Why is there such a discrepancy between UK and Continental Europe, particularly since many petroleum companies are international?
:p Are we starting a new Thread with this title?

As stated at #73.. we passed a garage with a price of 90p ish below their petrol and diesel prices on the main road side price board so assume that was LPG..
This was on A99 South of Wick...2 days ago.

Yes, I saw your post. Didn't see it when we were up there, but maybe we missed it as we weren't expecting it as it wasn't on either of the apps we use for LPG. We do usually look out for it. Is it possible for you to add it to one of the apps to help others?

The fewer places that sell it will hopefully be in more demand and continue to sell it…?😎
That’s not working to my advantage locally. Several big name retailers have removed lpg from sale, checking myLPG.eu app I saw it was available at an independent in Flamstead, very close to the M1 junction 9.
I wasn’t empty but I managed to spend £26, I checked the price, £1.25 p ltr. !!!

Who needs it locally… hopefully one will be on your route or a slight detour off your route is no big deal…😎

Yes thot about that.. as you, i was not looking for it and was well past garage when it dawned on me what I had seen..
Mentioned to Mr Poppycamper but not exactly sure now where it was and don't want to post false info..
Perhaps others can look out for it if in area...

Just passed Gleaner at Onich and they definately got autogas... £94.9/l

Yes we got it from there a few weeks ago. It was locked up when we passed in September so we were worried they had stopped selling it but thankfully they haven't.

we are thinking of putting a prerecorded message on our phone .

I deal in phone numbers and can get you an "LPG hotline" which can play a message saying you do or don't have gas :)

I don't think the reduction in LPG availability is scaremongering at all. I used to have 2 stations within 7 miles of me, now my nearest is 25 miles away. So I thought no worries I'll fill up on the way. First place I stopped that wasn't too far out the way was empty. So I found one near my destination, also empty. Unlucky I guess.

I think its great that some places are starting to cater for us, like Marquis rolling it out (slowly but they are).
I also often prefer to fill up in France because the fitting is much easier once you screw on the adaptor than our stupid UK system. None of this push twist stand on your head and roll the dice. Never had a problem with "dirty gas".

I always try to avoid filling up in France as their LPG is known to have high oily residues which plays havoc with the fridge.

I prefer to fill up in the UK or Portugal as you know you are getting 95-100% propane. Fill up in any other country and you will have a high percentage of butane up to 65% in Spain, a bummer if you come back to a cold winter in the UK.

Exactly. 👌🏻👌🏻

Used a site in Walsall today, from the autogas website, 72p a litre and attended service. Access was reasonable but a bit bumpy.
They said their business was mainly taxis but that the taxis were being pushed to phase lpg out.

I was nagged by swmbo to buy some lpg as she was convinced, in spite of all the evidence, that we were running low. Eventually I gave up the argument and filled up at the next filling station in Spain, and got in all of 10L (2×11kg Alugas ie approx 44L capacity).
Next trip is not scheduled till September unless we go somewhere in the UK (highly unlikely) so we should be OK.

At least when I filled up in Spain I got 34 Lt in (56lt capacity 2 x 14kg Alugas). :giggle:

While Im a bit obsessive about getting a good price for diesel, I never bother about the price of lpg, so far this year I have only spent £14 on it so a few pence in the price is irrelevant.

I don't worry to much we only use about 150 Lt a year.

Yes I've read about this also but never experienced it. Maybe I don't use enough gas to notice? But my wife is often telling me the milk is too cold  .

I do only fill up at motorway service stations, maybe the dirty stuff is a more local station thing?

Excuse me if this has been said before but It may be scaremongering to say the number of outlets are reducing doe to reduced demand but you could possibly expect this to lead to higher prices.

Unfortunately the vast majority of customers don’t have any understanding of the costs involved.
So let’s say a staff member on minimum wage is going to serve LPG .
You can multiply their headline wage by at least 1.7times so now you have a cost of approximately £18.00 per hour .
Minimum time to serve a customer would be approximately 5 minutes but often much longer.
So at say 10 minutes that’s £3.00 wage cost alone that’s not including the fixed overheads and making a profit on the sale .
So say it’s a £5.00 sale , we’ve probably just actually lost around £3.00
And as we don’t have any staff on minimum wages our costs are higher than the example above.
And still we get asked “can you just look at this leak or can you tighten up this etc etc “ .

Regardless of your particular cost base the truth is that prices in a competitive market are set by supply and demand.

As a slight aside, I am thinking of getting a couple of refillable tanks and I was wondering are the lpg pumps generally sited to fill just one side of a van (offside or nearside) or will the hose reach either side? I know there is a pump at our local Morrisons but I haven't checked which side it will reach, it is not possible to come at the pump from the other direction.
