UK availability of LPG

jimbow. Did you see the advice re Morrisons at Wellingborough, being your nearest Autogas outlet to Rushden?

Cheers,

Jock. :)

some good info regarding Calor gas bottles from the RYA

Think there is lots of confusion on the gas scene.
This thread is about refillable systems which I still call Autogas (even though Autogas is no longer). That is where your go to a supplier and fill your refillable underslung tank or bottle.
You then also have exchange bottles... Calor/ Flogas etc.
The two are totally separate.... you either have one or the other.

No confusion, and a really self explanatory article from the RYA, just thought it may be of use to others….

some of us have one refillable, and one exchangeable bottle……

Nice to see that the RYA actually seems to understand the relevant standards and regulations, unlike the leisure vehicle industry which is at the moment like the Wild West ⚠️
Plenty of suppliers out there that should take note of this from that article :
Anyone purchasing a new regulator should check that it is less than 3 years old from the date of manufacture.

O service station on the A82 has lpg on tap, 99.9p….

RYA are an excellent organisation all round.

They do a lot of lobbying on behalf of the nautical community both in UK and overseas and often very effectively. They are also trusted by government to test and issue licences, but not professional ones for ships.

It is a pity that the Motorhoming community do not have an equivalent.

Picked up a post elsewhere from the RYA that Calor have reversed their decision on small cylinders. Apparently they hadn’t realised the impact it would have on the boating and camper communities!

Maybe they also now rethink their autogas policy and reintroduce it at their premises and/or partner with others to bring it back to forecourts.. Yep I know wishful thinking.👍

Kick myself now and apologise for not taking note.... However we passed a garage yesterday with LPG price on main board (90 ish p/l) on the A99 just south of Wick..
Does not appear in any AUTOGAS Apps

Out of interest I checked on mylpg.eu for lpg outlets around our area, Katowice, Poland, and there are 123.

Why is there such a discrepancy between UK and Continental Europe, particularly since many petroleum companies are international?

It might well be scaremongering.

But for years I've never heard of anyone running out of refillable gas. Last year we had at least a dozen people on site asking me where the nearest gas was because they were out/nearly out and couldn't find any. Luckily In Sutton I can direct them to a local independent garage that sells it.
And you wonder how many garages with LPG they already passed that day. If you are that worried and can't be bothered to use any one of the apps, fill up whenever you see it is not a bad rule.

I have found the apps unreliable in the sense that they say lots of places have gas, but you turn up and they took it out maybe two years ago, with one saying the £8500 to recertify their tanks wasn't worth it. Now when I use the apps I always phone the garage first to ensure they do, indeed, still sell LPG on the pump. Also, I'm confused that some Morrisons sell it, but others have taken it out. I don't think they are franchises or independents (like some garages), but maybe they are. But it's defo harder to find now than it used to be. We live in Chester and have to go to Deeside or Wales to get ours locally.

Please don’t phone 😂
It’s actually now becoming a nuisance, we are thinking of putting a prerecorded message on our phone .
I had 2 fills on Thursday at £1.50 each and then another at less than a pound .
The time taken by staff to answer the phone is costing more than the sale ⚠️

Not as much of a ''nuisance'' as it is for Moho drivers to go miles out of their way to find an oasis of LPG only to find it turns out to be a mirage.............

Because less people drive LPG powered cars in the UK. Less demand for it.

it’s part of the adventure 😂

Absolutely bang on

I was nothing to do with not being bothered. I think these people will be doing that now. It was a combination of pumps fast disappearing and a lack of gas that caught people out. Previously they could fill up on most any forecourt, this really was a bonus, countless dozens of times I put less than two quid in to keep myself topped up. That big advantage of refillables has gone with the pumps.

Having read the press release it’s more of a short term stay of execution, those little cylinders are a relic from a bygone era and as the statement says they won’t be replacing the existing stock once out of test .
They’ve already destroyed a huge number apparently.

The LPG tanks at Trago Mills near Newton Abbot have been empty for months now, with a ”sold out” sign on the pump. The staff say that the tankers are prioritising domestic customers so they haven’t been able to get a refill of the tanks. They say there’s no plan to phase them out, but is there some sort of national shortage at the moment Basildog?

It’s actually now becoming a nuisance,

Thats what I predicted last year. I hope some of the dealer pumps will be busy. Those little top ups are no issue on a forecourt but elsewhere they are a pain.
I know eddievanbitz installed a pump in the early days of refillables, and got fed up with fitters on fitters wages leaving fitting jobs for 10/15 minutes to become a forecourt attendant and deliver just £1.20 of gas! They soon stopped selling gas to the public.

It’s not just those with refillable systems that have been struggling, we now get requests to fill Calor cylinders etc pretty much every day now , planning ahead is definitely more important than it was , LPG isn't going anywhere but I think maybe the Leisure market isn’t as lucrative for the suppliers as people like to think.
The number of people who either fill their their tanks/ cylinder once every couple of years is amazing, imagine trying to run a profitable exchange cylinder service where they sit in peoples sheds / garages for years.
It’s also far more seasonal than I ever imagined,

Unless you need gas to use at home why are you travelling just to get gas?
We and a lot of other Funsters who do not have relatively local Autogas (our nearest 15mls away) get into the habit of filling up on way home from trip away so tanks are full ready for next adventure!
I personally do not understand the apparent obsession of some to have a gas dealer on their doorstep.👍
Well said I just fill up as and when I can

Carry an 11kg Gaslow with remote fill and 6kg Calor cylinder trying to cover all bases. Always managed to find a garage before running out. Never used a main supplier, ie one that fills bulk tanks, and wondering if others do and what their experiences are?

Yup!

It’s not worth it.
We stopped selling LPG this was a typical’sale’

Someone comes in to the office wanting LPG so out we go to the pump “

Where’s your van?”

”Over on the campsite”

”Do you want to go and get it then🙄

Wait ten minutes, before going back into the office just as the van turns up

”Where is your filler?”

”Oh, the other side, will your hose reach?”

”No, can you turn the Van round please 🙄

Another ten minutes whilst the man and his co pilot make a 37 point turn (in a huge car park)

”Is everything turned off?

”Yes except the fridge and the water heater”

”Can you turn everything off please”

Another five minute wait

”Four litres? FOUR LITRES!

”Yes I just wanted to top it up”

”That’s £2.20 please” 😡

So I banned it lol
