UK availability of LPG

Oh goody goody... yet another LPG (Autogas) scaremongering thread..
🤣🤣🤣🤣

Not a friendly response to someones first post.

Over the years I've seen so many posts about safe voltage for motorhomes. Imagine if your first post was answered something like, Oh goody, yet another who doesn't know his arse from his elbow when it comes to basic motorhome electrics.

Maybe you'd have thought this place unfriendly and not stayed around.

Here we go again

Ditto

Try and be a bit more courteous to new posters please. Thanks

Sorry Libs for an unsporting and glib response to your first posting... uncalled for however in my defence I did not realise you a Newbie.... normally Newbie posts are accompanied by umpteen WELCOME messages.. which for some reason apart from one, I believe, were not there..
So again Sorry and Welcome...

Today we have been to Flo Gas, Newark Road, Peterborough PE1 5YD. It's the actual Flo Gas depot and supplies for underslung tanks or bottles. We live in Rushden but we're unable to find a local to us provider, so well worth the hour journey. Doubt they will be ceasing operation any time soon by the size of their wagons

Unless you need gas to use at home why are you travelling just to get gas?
We and a lot of other Funsters who do not have relatively local Autogas (our nearest 15mls away) get into the habit of filling up on way home from trip away so tanks are full ready for next adventure!
I personally do not understand the apparent obsession of some to have a gas dealer on their doorstep.👍

When we were in Spain last year, we were in a queue for the LPG pump, maybe a dozen taxis, and some other cars, along with our RV and another motorhome. They were doing a roaring trade. As a clean fuel, by comparison, why does the UK have a different stance?

If you are. dealer, It's a good way to get people to come to you, I note that Marquis have already added one to their Exeter dealership. So its a start. (y)

That said, I know someone who had an LPG tank and delivery system installed on a campsite, but they stopped selling it to the campsite visitors and public in the end as it became a PITA.

Someone would want a fill up at the most inconvenient times (when they were busy elsewhere, or eating etc) Thery would drop everything to serve them to find they needed 1.2 litres because they were "just topping up mate" Or "Thought I was emptier than that" All the hassle for 10p profit.

That's our local depot @ £0.78ppl. :)

According to my Autogas App, Morrisons at Wellingborough is your nearest outlet, and only £0.80ppl too, as updated on 07/02/2023. (y)
Save yourself some diesel man. ;)

Cheers,

Jock. :)

You have no idea how others use their MH, I use mine as a home office, when it’s on the drive, so may use the gas on occasion, might be cheaper given the price of domestic electrical tariff.

so yes to have a supplier locally is good to know.

Here we go again

It's the new "I got gassed if I stay in a motorway aire" 😄

I now just fill as I enter France and refill when I leave France. My twin 11kg will easily cover my UK events.
France is the one place I try to avoid filling up, they have a reputation for high oily residues in their LPG.
I've met several people on my travels that have had problems with their fridge burners sooting up after filling in France. When we bought our first Motorhome I always remember our Belgium dealer saying don't fill up in France gas is dirty.
I do fill up in France when I have to, I've never had a problem but I do have gas filters fitted.

Last October we met up with Chris & Gram in France bellabee, they were having trouble with the fridge running on gas, I asked if they had filled up in France, yep they had, swapped to their other bottle and it worked OK.

I prefer to fill up in the UK or Portugal as you get 95 - 100% propane, you get a high butane content in other countries up to 65% in Spain can be a right pain if you have in your tanks in cold weather.

Yes you are quite right.... I have no idea how others use their moho's.....That is why I started my post
"Unless you need gas to use at home" !

that’s helpful, could you share their locations?
in Coventry we have Flogas and LPG cars that both provide, and are both easily accessible for a large van.
As well as Binley Morrisons. That is very handy for passing motorhomes on the A46 bypass

I also have a use for my MH in the yard: in fact today, being a Friday when our cleaner comes and I usually de-camp to our basement office, but because I had a bad night's sleep I decided that I would use the MH for a kip.

I flipped the heating on in advance. The bedding and furnishings are always left in situ as we seem to have no problems with damp nor condensation, probably due to the sandwich insulation of N&B construction.

It is also a spare bedroom, which we use when we need it - easier to give over our bedroom than to instruct guests in the intricacies of water and toilet facilities in the MH.

We do have a BP station about one km away, but then 75% of fuel stations in Poland seem to offer LPG, but we also try to arrive home with LPG full and usually do not need to fill again before leaving on the next trip.

And you also said you didn’t understand your perceived obsession of others to have a local supplier……..

your post could have been less caustic if you had just said “we just fill up on route”

It's definitely in the Google Play Store, as I've got it on my Samsung phone and tablet. I only use the website when on my PC. (y)

Cheers,

Jock. :)
Yep it’s blooming Apple and iPhone that’s the problem, all ok on android 😉

Lost our local BP one, but still have 4 within 30 minutes drive.

I am happy to carry on for now with refillable and will eat glass before Calor get any of my cash.

I am in-line with you feelings about Calor. Although soon after I got the MH I fitted one Gaslow and just for back-up fitted a Calor cylinder, but it has stayed unused in 10 years so the expense f the security has been spread over that period - not much really, although had I gone to France or Spain to buy a cylinder it could have saved a lot of the ferry fare.

Have Calor got any replacement cylinder competitors in UK?

We're in France at the moment Lenny HB , and the nights are blooming cold 🥶. We may have to top up our gas tomorrow 😯.

Not surprising Calor doesn’t seem interested in the small cylinders for leisure use 😂

Fear not, we topped up in Spain and also in France and are using it in freezing France without any problems. Make sure you check prices though as they vary wildly and there can be up to 40c a litre difference.

You have only been there two days, did you go with empty bottles. :giggle:
Fit some filters quick you know what happened last time.

From what I have read, most uk filling stations will phase out LPG by 2024. It’s already getting hard to find places that sell LPG particularly in Scotland. My van’s heating /hot water, hob and fridge are all gas fed by an underslung tank . We haven’t ever bothered with hook up as don’t need it.

If anyone is else is in this situation, what will you do? Are there alternatives that can use the tank? Or do I need to somehow move to bottled gas?
We are in Scotland at the moment and have passed lots of garages with lpg And filled up at one of them
