Timing/Cam Belt Replacement - Cost and Location

MOT plus new cam belt would have been £740 but now they tell me that the fuel pump is leaking and will require replacement. Another £660 to find before they will actually complete the MOT! This is on a 2012 Fiat Ducati chassis.
I was a happy customer of Parkers Garage in Bognor Regis but now feel that I will have to search out another place to go.
My experience with Adams Morey in Portsmouth was not good when they told me that they would need to cut open part of the cable harness to find a problem that was giving an alarm. The problem was finally located by Parker's Garage. It was due to the oil pressure switch not working properly. At the time they charged me £43 and apologised for the extra time because the starter motor had to be dismounted to get to the switch. Needless to say I stayed with Parkers Garage since then but a few years back they came under new management ( The original owner retired) Prices and work level/costs now seem to be escalating.

Just got a quote off Endyke Tyres, Hull for having the cambelt and water pump done they're, just round the corner from us and we use them for the MH MOT, tyres etc and for our Smart car stuff too. They've not done a cambelt on an A-class before but is aware that they are more difficult due to the bodywork/access restrictions. He's given us a quote of a maximum of £840 inclusive of VAT but if it's less he'll charge us less but if it's more he won't ask us for more and will just absorb the cost and treat it as a learning curve expense.

Doesn't seem bad seeing as our local Fiat professional garage quoted us £1800!

Just been quoted £840 incl. VAT for cambelt and water pump replacement by TMD Motorhomes of Redditch. Adria and Burstner Dealer. They have also just become a dealer for Etrusco motorhomes. https://tmdmotorhomes.com/etrusco/

I’ve just had this place recommended to me by our trusted Citro Motors man Tomaz, who looks after our Citroen car. If he could fit it in his workshop I’d get him to do it. I’ve not enquired myself yet though, ours is due this year so will report in a few months.
He said a few of them worked for Jordans prior to here, they appear popular with works van owners.

Just wanted to give you a great big 'thank you' for this! :*

We were going to Endyke for the cambelt just round the corner but when hubby rang to confirm the details the owner was on holiday so he spoke with the garage manager wasn't keen to do it as they'd never done one before despite the owner wanting them to do so as he's installed heavy duty lifts etc to take on MH & van work. We weren't sure what to do so your giving me this info was a great help! They quoted us the same price for the cambelt and their MOT was cheaper than Endyke so that was a bonus, but even if it had been more we'd likely have used them as they know exactly what they're doing.

Our camper went into Advance yesterday and passed it's MOT and had it's cambelt done today, they are going to finish off tomorrow morning so hopefully we'll have it back late tomorrow or Thursday then we're gonna have to have a trip to check it's okay before our winter soiree.

That’s good, I haven’t arranged anything yet as I thought I’d leave it until the end of the year to have it done.
Were they were alright about it being an A class?
Do you know what kit/belt they used?
Ours has been off the road for the last 5/6 weeks because I decided to use a ‘professional’ to fit a roof light, rather than DIY, it leaked and soaked our bed. All sorted now.

Yup, no problem, no additional cost compared to a standard cab either.

Do you know what kit/belt they used?
No, it'll no doubt be on the invoice when we get it.

That's a real bummer, hope you played merry hell with them!

Interesting thread for me this one as i have just had a verbal quote from main dealer VW Wrexham to have the belt/chain done on my VW Caddy. Only 21k miles in 7 years.
Quoted £805.
So I'm thinking, gen parts proper job done and will go for it when i get back from Dubai.

D. W. Salmon of Weeley in Essex. Fiat professional garage £600 for cambelt change. Never had any complaints with them and they do the servicing as well. There is a camp site just up the road and a good bus service into Clacton.

MTM autos of Sunderland did my 2016 Fiat Ducato 2.3 full cambelt kit including waterpump 18 months ago, £475.
Been champion since. Genuine parts ?

I'd like to try and build a dataset of mechanics who you guys trust to change a cambelt.

If you've had this done recently, it would be great to know the price and location, for example

Smiths Garage, Lincoln. £700 (included new water pump)

Thanks (y)

Hello, I am a bit late with this, but I use Gravel Lane Garage Services (now in Quarry Lane in Chichester). They did my 2017 fiat a couple of years ago for about £760 which included the water pump.

A mates experience (PVC) "done 4th November by Amber Autos of Ripley. Their engineer/ mechanic has served many years with Birchwood Trucks Nottingham who are main Fiat commercial dealer so I was confident he knew what he was doing.
Gates timing belt kit plus gates air con belt plus gates auxiliary belt. All in inc vat £536.40. (for me a 160mile round trip)
They are within 1/2 mile of an exit junction of the A38, easy access M1 junct 27 or 28. "
My experiance so far
£860 fiat pro Northampton or £970 if i want them to connect to ecu for update to V32

local garage yes i can do that, Pick it up after MOT pass beautifull.
How much for Cambelt then , "cant do it fiat wont tell me what parts and tools i need there are 5 possible different engines" How do you translate that? Cant be ar***.
So Booked into Adams Morey Portsmouth C class £806 Belt and all auxillary belts (no water pump) can you update to V32 please? That'll happen automatically (if it needs it) when we plug it in. Standard practice.
Lets see how thursday pans out. only a 250mile round trip. How far would you go?
PS I asked for Lennys price Lenny HB
Good afternoon, I notice that some time ago you posted a recommendation for Amber Autos of Ripley. Would this be the same Amber Atos just up the A38 at Alfreton on Monk Road Industrial Estate which is just off the A38 and advertise servicing and MOTs for motorhomes? They are approx. 30miles from me and I am looking for someone who knows what they are doing for renewal of cambelt etc at a reasonable cost on my Ducato 2.3L 130bhp Autotrail Savannah. Your advice would be much appreciated. Regards, John

Hi all. I went to Fiat Professional to have the gearbox oil(s) changed. Croydon. I asked about timing belt and costs. I was told it should be done every 5 years and current price (2024) was £1400.
The guy said our engine -2.3 2018, is great as long as the oil is in good condition. He recommended changing the oil and filter every year on a Motorhome as they sit for long periods of time and also sit at idle frequently. The oil is hygroscopic so absorbs water when not moving then breaks down when warm.
It makes sense to me. I change the oil and filter each year now.
I got the local guy to do the timing belt this year. Fiat belt kit plus water pump £900 all in.
I guess London prices. Good job though.

Hi again. Forgot to say - ours is an A Class, 25000 on the clock.
The guy who did it, personal friend- had to buy the specialist timing tools for our engine. He did not charge of course but has them for next time.

Why not have it done whilst away & collect on return?
