Tam &Toby do Europe ...Take two

Maybe you are going to have to head for higher altitudes while the wretched things are about.
I think we are at about 1000 ft here,so that much chillier and we don't appear to have them.
Enjoy your well earned coffee and relax for a while (y)
They appear to be anywhere there's pine trees. And not easy to spot as they blend in with all the pine needles on the ground

Angela was planning to visit that place so yeah I've told her ...I told her before I left to find a vet and she's been texting ever since ...she got quite attached to jade

Who wouldn't? She probably has a very slight soft spot for you too (after all, there are plenty of us on here that do ).lol

My husband got one caterpillar down his shirt when mountain biking, and got a very painful red rash on his chest. If it had been more than one he would’ve had to have treatment. We spoke to a chap whose dog had to have some of his tongue removed as it went bad after the caterpillars got on it, but he said the vet had told him he was lucky the dogs throat hadn’t closed! We keep our Springer Spaniel on the lead if we see any signs in the trees - in fact we came home in February this year to avoid them! Good news is they are less common in tourist areas( councils spray I think), and they go by the summer. Some people wash the dogs paws when they get in from a walk, in case they have the fibres on them and then lick their paws.

I'm suspecting that's what jade had done as she kept licking her back paws and it was then she started rubbing her nose with front paws or on the seats my legs etc.

I didn't see any in the trees today that's why I wasn't aware they were there as I avoid the bits where I can see the nests ....but it seems they've dropped to the ground now

I'll just have to keep a closer eye on her as she is exactly the type of dog that sniffs everything

If vets were reasonable in the uk then more people would take their pets to them and there would be less suffering.....

Why is the uk such a greedy rip off.....

couldn't agree more, our vet wanted to charge £37 for a flea tablet that was £12 on tinternet, trouble is you needed a prescription, and, he wanted £20 for that!

While you’re at the vets you can buy a syringe to carry with you in case she does get near them so you can inject her yourself if no vet available.
Any more details on this please. I've searched t'internet but can't find any info. We're off to Crete next month and I know that most of the pine trees have processionary caterpillar nests and we are quite a way from the nearest vets. Thanks.

Yep UK vets are scandalous...I don't believe their priority is animal welfare it's money in the bank.
The difference between normal vets and pdsa at home is ridiculous.

At home I'd have been charged for the 2 injections plus 2 syringes , for washing her , the paper towels , the wipes lol

They charge for everything.

If you look at that link I posted in reply to val it says you can buy a syringe or pills to carry with you

I think a large part of the problem is Insurance. The first question a lot of vets ask "is the animal insured"? If the answer is "yes" you can watch the zeros going on.
Having said that a lot of large animal practices are struggling and to stay equipped with the latest technology vets are up to their necks in hock to the drug companies and each qualified vet in the practice has to earn ( prescribe drugs ) to a specified amount each day.

So anyhoo after all that excitement I'm back up in the hills at a quiet wee picnic spot to spend the night.

Yes, I read that but I would like to know what the pills/injections are and where to get them. Internet tells you nowt.
Unfortunately I don't know

Maybe need to speak to your vet , communication was hard with that one

I have been with my vets back in the UK for nearly 25 years, they have become good friends and know /have known all my animals personally.
OK the bills aren't small but they do the very best they possibly can for my animals and when I am back in the UK, if needed they write prescriptions for my elderly infirm dog . I feel lucky to have them .

we had been with our vet practice for over thirty years. The dog on the right of my avatar (Ozzie) gulped down a large lump of meat that my wife accidentally dropped when carving a joint. He was choking, so we rang the emergency vets, I drove as fast as I could with him, got there within 5 minutes of calling, then spent the next 10 minutes hammering on the door.( so hard I bruised my hands). Eventually 2 young "duty nurses " came to the door, looking very sheepish, and carried him in, too late, he had gone. So much for loyalty, needless to say we don't go to them any more.

UK vet prices have risen considerably since the big uptake in pet insurance..Dont think insurance companies ever query the bills,,BUSBY.

In my opinion it's insurance companies that are the rip off, with all their small print and get out clauses.
Where pets are concerned they are more than happy to take your money while the pet is young and healthy but once your pet gets a bit elderly they don't want to know and should you once have to make a claim, there will be an exclusion on that particular condition thereafter.

@The Dudess go to any vet and ask for the antidote for them they will know what you want. We are in Portugal at the moment and will be buying some in the next day or two. The other advice i was given was to carry water with you on walks (lukewarm is better) and wash feet and mouth if they get close to them.

Right these damm caterpillars....has anyone had a dog that's gone near them ?
Because they seem to be everywhere now and I'm getting paranoid

Just been for a climb up to a ruined castle and while I was up there jade was rooting around below like she does. When I climbed back down I discovered loads of the buggers on the ground everywhere.

I don't know if she was at them or not.

She's fine and acting as normal but how do I know if she's been at them

You need to keep her on the lead as even getting within a few inches the caterpillars can actually 'fire' the body hairs a good few inches.
Yes they are dangerous not only th animals but to small children.

They appear to be anywhere there's pine trees. And not easy to spot as they blend in with all the pine needles on the ground

There are different types of pine tree & in some areas , like up by the dam above Lorca where I take Alfie , I have never seen any.
& yes I get paranoid about them.

about 14€ here + you can buy order them through most Farmácias by the box.

Mate of mine in Orihuela had a terrace that he was enclosing. Found a caterpillar wandering across so picked it up & put it over the wall. Then went for a wee. o_O Had to go to hospital .His wife said she'd never seen it that size:LOL::LOL:
Why not sort your brakes & get away from the problem ?

Tam I’m sorry my post was meant for the morning Funsters as they are following our travels to Spain!
It seemed frivolous at the time of your crisis with Jade ,Sorry again.

So glad you are sorted with Jade , we don’t have a dog but will watch out they sound horrendous.

You have supportive friends on here watching your back.
Safe travels and I look forward to seeing Milo!!

Glad Jades all okay.
I never slept well last night for over thinking what would I do if it were my 2 dogs.
Seems you got good service at the vets.
One of our dogs needed treatment in Dunfermline,I was asked if I was insured,I replied I was not,and they said that they could help.
2 teared pricing

Yes the vet was really good to be honest, first time I've had jade near one myself.

I don't have her insured ..it's something I've not got around to and not sure if it's something I should get or not.

I have savings should I need it but judging by some folks experience with insurance maybe I'd be better just paying as I go and hoping we don't need them.

We made it down the N10 no toll!!!
Brave girl, I hate the N10, flipping 80kmh limit & no overtaking on a motorway standard road and all the bleeding Spanish lorries.
I prefer the A20 not too many lorries and toll free from about 20 km south of Orleans to south of Bruce, we tend to turn off at Limoges and go down via Bergerac.

I don't have her insured ..it's something I've not got around to and not sure if it's something I should get or not.
I would, daughter's Springer swallowed a stone got stuck in he bowel vet fee £3500, 9 months later did it again this time only got stuck in her stomach £1500.
May be two tier pricing but also two year treatment. Daughter's dog got rushed in and operated on at midnight dogs without insurance had to wait for normal hours for their ops. Could be the difference between surviving or not.
