Tam &Toby do Europe ...Take two

On a different note I'm considering cancelling my service and cambelt change for Friday as 1) I'm not sure I can stay away from the van for 8 or 9 hours with the dogs in this heat. 2) as it's not an emergency it might be best to leave it and get it done later so if there were any issues I have some comeback.

This is mainly due to previous experiences with garages

What's the general rule for cam belts? I can't see any evidence of a change of belt in my documents. Should I get it done just to be on the safe side?

Still can't get over the difference ?

Having largely grown up on farms and having unknowingly adopted two adult sheep worrying dogs in my life time so far, I can sympathise with you Chaser.
I don't know the answer , but I am sure depriving humans of the companionship of dogs is not it.

How dare you change the subject, oh, hang on a minute, it's your thread and it's supposed to be about your travels!! :D:D

Thankfully I only caught up with all your Milo drama this morning, I'd have hated 'living it' real time, luckily I soon got to the happy conclusion. That must have been a terrible few days, glad you are all ok, Jade too with her trying to get in the act with her red poo!!!

Most are around 50-60000 miles or every 5 years due to ageing

I know this had one done for sure in 2014 so just 5 years now and only 15000 miles ago

That's why I said to you to use it I negotiation s when buying it either to have them do it or knock 3 or 400 quid off

From this old invoice the cambelt kit is around £95 - 130
No need to do water pump on these so not a big job but always best to do it if not sure when it was done.

If one wanted to be mischievous, one might point out that Mum was proper poorly while her son was by her side, but now same son is at the far end of Europe, Mum is doing significantly better. Just saying...
Ah but she got poorly while I was still away last year that's why I ended up home at the start of October as she had a stroke in September then her wee dog died then she ended up in hospital 28th September.....I got home 5th October :p

In my opinion anyone who hasn't got their own land big enough to let dogs roam should either not have them or keep them on a lead at all times.
I'd have no problem with that as long as the same applied to cars. Like Japan if you have no off road parking you are not allowed to own a vehicle. That'll remove 50% of cars and vans.

No problem with that , sounds sensible to me, same houses as my previous thread, all got at least two chelsea tractors , one always at home.

It's the ones with offroad parking that then clog up the streets by not using it that do my head i!!

Sorry Tam, here we go again!!

Back on track, have you cancelled the cambelt? It's worth double checking the recommendations for your engine, mine is VW based and I thought it was 50,000 or 5 years, but turned out it was 4 years.

In 2017 while I was back in the UK, the cambelt on my Ducato /Hymer was changed based on the 4yearly recommendation and the advice of th

Well I wonder what would be the social consequences of a policy like that in UK, where many ciites, towns and villages have rows of terraced house which were built before the motor car.

Imagine old people (including me) trying to do shopping. Some could not even get help from offspring or neighbours, who also could not have cars.

Was it meant to be controversial?

I will get my popcorn.

That would piss off a lot of fulltimers

As far as I can see it's 5 years can't find the fiat one for some reason but I'm not talking about cancelling it indefinitely just a few months till I'm back home

Presumably the 5 year recommendation isn't to the minute... and when in 2014 it was done, beginning, middle or end.
Just be sensible, get it done when convenient, but don't put it off too long.
End of May 2014.

The previous owner claimed he had a new belt fitted and full service done in April 2017 but there's no proof of that and he didn't come across as that trustworthy so I've discounted it nd just going by the documented one of 2014. I'll be home by end of November at the latest so would have it done then by someone I trust.
I'd considered it here purely on costing but not sure if much cheaper to be honest.

I honestly don't want to keep this dog thing going on tams otherwise excellent thread, but just for information, have a look at this.
All noted. Most farm dogs are rarely wormed until worms appear in their faeces. No farmer ever picks up. Worrying is a different subject.

So momentarily back in Spain, crossed the border to Isla Cristina to refuel ( €1.19 here compared to €140 Portugal) and pick up a few things in mercadona I can't get in Portugal, will stay around here tonight and then head back across and up the east side tomorrow.

No,it is something that should have been addressed and planned for by government and councils years ago. Many towns in Devon I went to recently the parking in no through roads was nose to tail & half on pavement to the extent that on many roads the only way out was reversing:
Here at my nephews most roads are utter nightmares.

True.

We bought a car from a local garage that we used to use and trust. A fortnight later, in Spain, the cam belt snapped and damaged two valves in the engine. The Spanish mechanic told us that he would never sell a car without changing the cam belt first. He said it's much cheaper to replace the cam belt than it is to replace valves in the engine. When we got back home and asked our local mechanic why he had not done this he said, "I did look at the cam belt and it seemed O.K." We took our custom elsewhere after that. A lesson learned. Always change the cam belt on a new-to-you vehicle unless you have proof that it has been replaced in the last 4/5 years.

I got a new van the other week. Couldn't see any proof of cam belt done in last 5 years so booked it in to a garage on Wednesday. Service, MOT and cam belt change I said. They phoned today saying no time for cam belt change but MOT'd and serviced it. Hears hoping that doesn't come back to bite me (or them) on the airse. I would have thought 3 days was ample time but apparently not.

That's a shitty excuse from them , book it in elsewhere and get it done. If no record of it

That was another reason that we stopped using that mechanic, We'd take a vehicle in to have a simple job done and get it back 2/3 days later. The guy we use now always finishes the job the same day ... and our vehicles have very few problems now. A much better mechanic all round.
