Tam n pups winter trip 2022

Here's a pic of the turbo unit View attachment 691710

The shiny silver bit that looks like a barrel is the waste gate actuator. There's a thin rod comes out of it and connects to the waste gate which is a flap inside the rusty bit. The arrow points to the little lever that opens and closes the flap. When the turbo kicks in to increase power it needs to dump the air waste but if the flap sticks it can't and it causes the problem I was having. It's a common fault on them

So the little lever that turns the flap is what I sprayed and wiggled. They are also bad for the rivet that holds the rod on to that flap breaking off. Thankfully mine looks like it has been replaced previously so it's not as rusty looking as the one in this photo
It's the other way round. The wastegate opens once the maximum boost is achieved and allows exhaust gas to bypass the turbo. The problem that causes power loss and the other symptoms you experienced is that it sticks open so full boost is never achieved. And in case you think I know what I'm talking about I drove my first Smart car around for 18 months assuming the rather gutless performance was normal until the MOT man pointed out the missing pin that should have connected the actuator and arm. It made a pretty big difference once I fixed it. Transformed the car.

Another milestone on the milometer today not to be seen the like of for another 10000 miles
Interesting, you're gearing is a little different to mine, assuming you were in 5th when you took the photo.
At 60 mph I'm just a touch over 2000 RPM, you look to be about 2700 RPM at 60
Yours is a much larger van, so Fiat (?) must have selected different gearing but it might explain higher fuel consumption ?

Well it's sprung and stays in one position until it has to move , before it was stuck and not moving and now it is which was my point lol .

It's made a big difference on this too , but there's still something not quite right on it as I still get the odd lack of power and a noise like its misfiring. But that does seem to be when I'm lower on fuel so it could be unrelated . But night and day to how it was

Bonswa 😁

We are in issoire tonight , arrived around 3pm , we left gien around 10am and had stopped for lunch about 20km north of Clermont-Ferrand. We are on an official aire again with all free services. Currently 7 other vans here with me all French, the aire holds 14 in total. Edit* no 8 just arrived with a trailer.

Had a walk around the town , its pretty sleepy with not much going on at this time of year , I was looking for something to take pics of but there wasn't much .

I was behind this camper today that I've seen before , it's a German cyropractor ( spelt wrong ) I'm sure I was parked beside him somewhere in Spain or summit before.

And the rest are the town ...not much to see really View attachment 692145View attachment 692146View attachment 692147View attachment 692148View attachment 692149View attachment 692150View attachment 692151View attachment 692152View attachment 692153

What town was that Tam..?

Edit sorry just seen..😎

The sea front one is only open in the summer.
I'm not going to either of them anyway as they are out the way of my route . There's a few free carparks in narbonne on park4night and one of those will do me . I'll only be there to sleep really anyway.

I'll top up my water and empty waste etc before I leave here tomorrow. That will give me at least a week then before I need to worry about an aire again , by which time I'll be a good bit in to Spain

11 km is not exactly out of your way.

Narbonne is a lovely city - to be fair though we’ve visited twice, both times were by bicycle. Worth a stop off though. We loved Gruissan but really because we could sit out in the sun by estuary and could walk/cycle into the charming village - not sure it would have the same charm as a quick overnight night halt.

We travelled part of the “Route Napoleon” down to Borg-on-Bresse in September. great weather but, after a sleepless night in a roadside Aire we said never again Nevers! Now I regret not looking around as the churches stain glass windows look great.

Loved the old town centre of Carcasonne , well worth a visit👍

Seen as uncle Lenny didn’t give you any graphite grease you may want to create your own.
Get a builder’s pencil and scribble all over the shaft of the waste gate, go over it a few times. obvs do it when cold though.
This will dry lube and nothing will stick to it, ie dust grit etc.
EGR valves did have a tendency to gum up on those too, blanking plates are on your usual auction site.
Mind if you can run it with plenty of boost now you will clear out most of the build up.

He is desperate to get to the sun, no chance in France:giggle:
That bit of France is warm. He made up his mind a long time ago he no like France.

2.8JTD doesn't have an EGR and graphite on the shaft I don't think will do much. It siezes up at the hinge on the lever end near the turbo.
I put copper grease on mine and that seems to work and last a little longer that most.

You don't give France a chance do you.
Admittedly there's been some nice places I've passed but it's still only 10° and rain or overcast so not the time to be hanging around France.
