My father in law has tins of pineapple....and when I say tins, I mean hundreds of tins. Some are 30 years old. Add to that rice pudding, tinned pilchards etc etc. He never eats tinned food but keeps on buying it.

My dear departed mum and dad were much the same. But it was a mentality of stocking up when you had money to get you through the many times when you had nowt. When we cleared their flat out there must have been 50 tins of red salmon, dozens of tins of rice pudding and tinned peas etc. Hundreds and hundreds of tea bags. Strangely for largely non drinkers there was about 15 bottles of Baileys. Bless them, I still miss my mum and dad very much.

I reckon your Mum is a 'Prepper' :giggle:

Definition of a Prepper: someone who believes that war or disaster will happen soon, and who collects food, equipment, and learns skills in order to be ready for it

Mrs mikebeaches is a bit of one too. Falling back on the kitchen store cupboard has worked out quite handy with the current rampant food inflation...

I’ve eaten a tin of red salmon over 3 years out of date… lovely it was…😋😎
It will be fine to eat that. I always go by if it's way out of date but looks ok, smells ok then eat it. I once found a pack of smoked salmon which had fallen behind the back of my salad drawer, it was 10 days out of date, fair enough I didn't eat it raw but I pan fried it and it was lovely(y)

I used to use the cat as a tester - if it didnt flinch at the smell of something it was ok to eat!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yep always trust a cat, dogs eat anything, I once found my puppy with a decomposed rat he was chewing on its tail like it was the most delicious delicacy
