Tam n pups winter trip 2022

I can't look at any more photos of the dogs now it is making me depressed. I can't handle it I'm afraid. I hope things get better for you Tam and you can cope with the stuff you are going to see on this trip. I hope someone can come on here and help direct you to better places. You need another CaptainPaul who knows the place inside out. How is Jackie coping with it? please tell me she got some wine at the supermarket. Jane And Rog never mentioned seeing any of this it looked so nice where they were. Did you follow their thread? they went on some lovely walks with their dog Flynn. Hope you haven't fallen asleep pissed after drinking that shit!

We did mention the rubbish problem a few times, to be honest. And a couple of issues with street dogs - one lot I had to scare away. See the tips at the end of our thread for details on how to deal with them. And Moussay Busselham also didn’t gel for us - we had a nice beach walk and an honest young boy sold us bread and gave us masses of change, but we were bothered by touts a little too, and it was foggy so we missed the amazing views.

Two things here. One, Morocco is not a rich, EU country. There is more poverty, there are street dogs and cats, there isn’t a proper waste disposal service. But on the plus side, there isn’t red tape, there seems to be far more freedom (the dog was allowed on all beaches, into cafes, we could barbecue), and I found the people lovely, with a can-do attitude you don’t often find at home. The attempts at wanting to guide us, or sell when we’d said no, were easily outweighed by the many positive interactions from people who loved their country and wanted us to love it too. And Rog and I have travelled in places like India - it helps to put Morocco in perspective. It probably also helped that we were expecting Morocco to be like our one week package holiday in Marrakech, where we were bothered by touts hard-selling the whole time. It was such a pleasant surprise that Morocco as a whole wasn’t like this (just as the UK is nothing like London) that I think we wore rose-tinted specs for a while!

My second point would be, do realise that your emotional state will be up and down more than perhaps you are used to, now you are older and wiser. You’re being exposed to a lot more new things! We had more than our fair share of the bad stuff - crashing into a tree and needing bodywork repairs, the air intake and turbo issues, with 2 nights on some wasteland, Dad in hospital back home. But luckily really, we were so far from home we had to see it through. Get yourself into the best of campsites, stay put for a few days, treat yourself to food, wine, whatever, and relax. Sure as day follows night you will feel better, and something great will happen.

(I would definitely use campsites and toll roads, they are so cheap compared to Europe and you are putting money back into the system to help improve things. Moroccan-owned campsites in particular are a great way to find what you need via a web of trust - we got all our car repairs this way.)

Get to Sidi Ifni - great town, great campsites - some people stay there weeks!

No wine for Jackie, no alcohol In that supermarket. I'm glad I brought my own I needed a drink tonight.

I saw bits of Jane and rogs thread but I've been avoiding all other threads and Instagram of others in Morocco because I wanted to see it for myself

Maybe they just didn't post about the other side of things or maybe they just visited the polished touristy places who knows. ..

Not pissed lol I've only had 2 glasses , wine was still OK 👌

No, we definitely mentioned rubbish and street dogs. My attitude to the latter is different though - I think of them as wild animals getting some human assistance, not pets who are missing out on the full pet experience. Based I suppose on when we lived in Ukraine, which also had masses of street dogs. You can help them, but you can’t help them all, sadly.

We posted photos of rubbish on our walks too. I was wondering about the possibility of starting a cottage industry making things from waste plastic? Find a use for the stuff…?
Jane and Rog just walked in the natural areas, no touristy places. It was really quite lovely like walking in the Peak District in my opinion, but hotter of cause !!
Our energetic large dog & cities isn‘t a good match, so we tended to be more rural where possible so he got a decent off-lead run every day. Really good walking in Tafroute in the Middle Atlas, and the town is a nice base too. Still rubbish around until you leave the town behind, and street dogs though.

I think Jane and Rog are right about the dogs, they know no other existance and the majority survive fine. There are lot of dog rescues in Maroc who concentrate on neutering the males and medical aid and feeding for those in need which they see as the only answer to the problem. They always need donations (money/food/etc ) and volunteers. Maybe you would consider making contact to see if there is any way you could help longer term, (maybe just raising awareness) they would be so grateful.
Sure you'll enjoy Maroc a bit further South, we do 😀 and Happy Birthday

Fiddlesticksing 50

That's going to take some getting used to
Tam, I feel your pain, having hit 50 myself last September.

Console yourself with the thought that on here we're still considered youngsters!
